KC-135 out lasted the KC-10 it will outlast the KC-46, the computer system sucks bad along with the camera system for the boom. it's a flying nightmare, the cargo floor cant even handle someone dropping a tool on the floor without it going through the fiberglass making a hole.

This jet is an absolute abortion. General LeMay is rolling in his grave thinking about what the AF and Boeing have done. The design is barely 20 years newer than the ancient (but still great) KC-135. Main problem 1; it's an airliner made into a tanker - not a tanker made into an airliner. 2) The boom camera system is a travesty. However thought that up - should be tracked down, re-enlisted, demoted, then retired again. STUPID! Getting rid of the NAV is 1 thing - they're gone - you save money. Adding technology - which barely works - to augment a guy who needs no help - is insane! I never - in 4000 hours and 15 year around the airplane had a boom tell me he/she couldn't do their job. What is the problem that this technology is fixing? Ernie, I'm looking at you.....

IMHO the KC-46 was a bad decision by the AF. Yes, it has a new flight deck, but it is not fly by wire and has PW4000 engines that are fuel inefficient late 1980s technology. Plus the KC-46 does not offer an increased fuel load over the KC-135. The Air Force should have either gone with the Airbus KC-45 or pressured Boeing to offer a larger more capable 787 based tanker.
