I would love for JPEG XS to find a home in Remote Desktop applications like RDP, Parsec, Teamviewer, etc. The low latency nature of JPEG XS would be very useful in making the desktop user experience fluid. I would also probably be amazing for gaming. Nvidia has their Geforce Now, Steam has in home streaming and there are other that are good and people do use them but often have been reported as being sluggish as there is usually a slight delay in the streams that can be measured in milliseconds. This really could be what is needed to make all of that go away. It isn't perfect especially if it is going over a WAN connection as the bandwidth definitely is greater than something like h.264 but especially for connections where this all happens on a local network it could be amazing. You do mention Gaming and Remote Desktop at the end. What products are actually using this already?

“You hardly imagine Amazon going down at all.” Sorry to target this point. They have outages all the them. Azure, AWS and other ‘cloud’ providers have unplanned outages. A google search will show many headlines about outages.

IGMP is a protocol. My opinion is that saying switches have IGMP is not accurate. Switches can have a capability called IGMP snooping. This capability allows a switch to modify their default behavior which is to flood multicast addressed frames out all ports except the port that received the frame. With IGMP snooping turned on, the switch will eventually have a record of what ports are connected to devices that are subscribed to specific multicast streams. The switch will then push multicast frames only out of those ports.

I don’t think printers are plug and play even today! IPMX does much better in the context of plug and play compared to printers. I am very impressed with connectIP by Matrox regarding NMOS controller.

I think i would challenge the assertion that the alignment accuracy needs to be 1/2 sample. Thats an ideal number but it doesn't have to be presumed to be true. Instead, why not consider what the practical effective limits are in terms of actual sampling of the analogue world? For example, consider that 100m of analogue audio cable adds around 0.5uS. The placement of a microphone also matters, the delay of a shotgun microphone placed 10m from the source is almost 30ms. If we're talking about video then i would assert that accuracy probably is proportional to the distance. So devices which are adjacent to each other need better accuracy than those which are further apart. Traditionally, synch didn't compensate for latency, but now it does, so we have scope creep.

Thank you for this great video. There was a question on the first slide "Should the IT and Broadcast network be shared". I couldn't find any document that talks about a shared network for SMPTE and classical IP data. It would be very interesting to know if such shared infrastructures are recommended, and where and why clear demarcations should be made. Is there a good source for this?
