He never acted upon the philosophies he envisaged. The whole idea of the text "The Prince" was to teach Lorenzo de Medici the practical ways of obtaining and maintaining power. Unfortunately, Lorenzo de Medici never read it. The Prince is a THEORETICAL exploration of politics. It never led to historical reign of cruelty. The content in the prince is based on strategies and not real world implementations. Machiavelli's philosophies were never acted upon by Lorenzo or any other leaders at the time.
