Bro DIY [#18] Detached Garage Renovation Update.
South Wall upgrade using pegboard and 20 Amp dedicated quadraplex receptacles.
Also, the addition of a switched vaportight light at the garage door entrance on the east wall.
I am really liking the Milwaukee Packout system on dollies for mobilization and organization.

    I just blew one of these Makita compressors up by trying to run a 1/2 inch impact wrench for about 40 minutes. This was about half-on half-off usage, but the mac failed me. Started humming and felt like it was seized up. Going to try to replace the capacitors and then use if for just nail guns and airing tires or something. Can you give me any pointers for the replacement job?

      @popsynthyarby5055 I have been building all types of jet engines for almost 50yrs. now and I have to tell you to just take your methodical time dis-assembling and re-assembling this compressor as to not hurry the task and screw up something. Starts out seeming like A,B,C, then patience gets tested. Just work on a bench level and everything will go well. I need to do the exact task again now. I'll Marketplace mine afterwards, this time. No space nor need now. The unit will work like new after the start and run capacitors are changed out, but the 25% duty cycle will have to be strictly respected, or you'll be in the free-time business of MAC5200 capacitor change-out. Good luck. Lemme know how it goes for ya.

      I have found, on this new platform, that Milwaukee has really done a deep dive into the tech/task foray. For me, the M18 line is the working man's reach solution, and the M12 line is for the rest of us, but ... the M12 screwdriver is another 'gap filler'. Personally, I am glad the same Red Link / Fuel tech. has been advanced with the same emphasis on both platforms. On my garage lighting project, I found the M18's were overkill and pretty much stored them after stocking up with the M12 tooling. I will definitely use the M18's on the heavier construction and use the M12 line as the everyday reach-for. I suppose, after decades, switching platforms and brands, we have all been bitten by the choice of offerings bug. Thanks for viewing!

I, too have been a development jet engine mechanic for almost 50 years and have used mostly company supplied SnapOn 3/8",1/2",3/4"&1" drive batt. & air with 1/4" hex drive Bosch 12v and can tell you now, from experience, the M12 FUEL Surge would be the only tool in my home box if I just had one to choose. It impacts and drills with a deftness of finger pressure. An amazing tool. Good luck!

I could get to a quarter of the stuff from the indoor entrance, and a third of the stuff from the garage door, and forget about what's in between. You try to get something, shit starts falling things start getting caught on your clothing sometimes it would ruin your day or what you were working on entirely. Your space is tightly packed, but at least organized well enough to be usable and to know where things are. So i would not consider this to be a 💣 going💥situation lol

    I am going through similar garage issues. I started by getting harbor freight storehouse cases with 20 bins in them. I spent $7 each. I bought 20 of them. Then I went through all of my bolts, nuts, washers, nails, and other hardware. I sorted out all of the jars filled with mixed hardware and threw all of the jars away. All of that stuff fits on one 4 ft X 1ft X 5 ft tall shelf. I can find everything now. The next thing I am doing is asking the question....Do I love this? If the answer is no, then sell it, give it away, or throw it away. Next, Ask yourself Have I used this in the last 5 years? Brake pads for a car you no longer own, or the manual for an appliance you no longer have need to be disposed of. Lastly, take it one project at a time. List out all of your open projects. prioritize the projects and do them in order of priority. If you have material for each project, put the material on its own shelf space grouped together to get that project done. It can also help to remove everything from the garage. Clean the garage, paint the walls and then throw all the trash away and put back only stuff that you have a use for.

      Yeah... idonno. Probably starting on a run capacitor, meaning the start capacitor is shot. Does it hum when starting? If not, it may be the opposite situation where the thing is operating on the start capacitor only and the run capacitor is shot. Even though the thing is 110v, the surge will have a long and deep sine. Try it on a 30amp. breaker. Good luck.

  • @asuarezjd
    @asuarezjd Год назад

    I like how organized and clean you have the area. Yet, is there any reason why you left the two hot leads so long? I know the first two spaces for breakers is optimal, but if it needs to be that low on the wall, then rather hit the bus bar which is fat, thick, faster with shorter wires below as there is less resistance in a fat piece of metal, than reaching up there inside two skinny wires. Is good to tackle right after the main breaker, but any nasty wave will embrace the bus bar at once before it travels down the wires to the protector. I guess what I want to say is than in situations like this is best for the path to be more of thick metal than wires. If the protector installed below the half bottom of the panel, then it should rather go sideways and shorter to the busbar instead of traveling up via a skinny wire. Is like a trip on a country road from point A to B instead of only half the distance and then hitting the highway so you can get there faster. Remember that all SPD's are tested at six inches, and it eats 100Volts every inch of wire after that due to resistance. Also, did you twist/braided the two hots for that long journey to the bus bar? If you twist them once per inch at least you optimize the absortion in cases where the lenght of the wire cannot be avoided. If you leave them in parallel the field it creates will create impedance. I know appliances are farther but it will bleed some leftovers from any "voltage tsunami" since two bends and the leght will reduce the efficiency. Is in the instructions probably. We old timers learned that any bend/curve sharper than the bottom of a soda can was too much. Keep in mind these wires are not for the same scenario that the rest of the circuit wires will experience. The "juice" is different. Its not amps but rather voltage, so bends and lenght are crucial. Looks like you have ample scpaes and options to do it sideways and meet the bus bars straight from the protector. Every nanosecond counts! That being said, I LOVE THE HIGH SATURATION FERRITES!!!!! I have them, those will capture and eat up any nasty distortion and pulses, they keep the juice for a while and slowly empty themselves again! They are like $53 each now in 2022, but well worth the protection. People should instell them more. I see many are conscious of the surge protectors but this ferrite gadget is not that known. I have them as well as the whole house surge protector, then another smaller one in a subpanel and one in the furnace and another in the AC condenser. Look up the MARS surge protector for the furnace, they have a smaller one 120V that is very practical, but don't forget your AC, not all surges come from the power lines, any lightning in your backyard can fry it. Good for you!!!!

      @@Bro_DoItYourself you have a very handsome panel there. You are good! Is just that I've seen the whole house protected, yet, at least three times, air conditioning condensers fried like bacon in the backyard. I am not sure how it happens but apparently it travels through the ground or the air instead of the utility wires and it's not until you disassemble the unit that you find the oil leaking and the gaskets melted and it's a mess! My father and I mostly worked new constructions and I was his slave. I had to wire entire houses, but when business was slow we would do house calls. I became a believer at least for an extra one in the condenser disconnect outside the house. I took pictures of the instructions where it reads that you have to twist the hot wires but it does not let me upload them. Back in the day all the surge protectors were for both 120/240v, and you just had to tie the two blacks together for 120v like a furnace. But, we always got phone calls of people breaking them or hurting their knees because they were like a big tumor protruding on the side. So, MARS, which is what we used mostly those days, has one now that is for 120 volts and it's half the size and it's perfect for the furnace. Model 83904, my (licensed contractor) price was $37 in 2022, not sure how much is for the public. The AC one is 83905. Mars is good brand, I know tons of people use intermatic because it has bling and it's pretty, but it's too damn expensive and it's not better than Mars...which is what old geezers like me always used. Good luck, those are Type 1 also, so no need for a breaker, you just put it in the disconnect, avoid double tapping because it's not allowed in some jurisdictions and can loosen the cable and catch fire. Pigtail them. There's a good video by a RUclipsr that is very professional nice chubby guy that always starts the video with the tie and go straight to it and it's the perfect video for this installation, the title is AC Maintenance How to Install a Surge Protector for your Air Conditioner, the channel is ANY HOUR SERVICES ELECTRIC PLUMBING AND HEATING. He is very professional, the video is short 5 minutes and the visuals are perfect and that's the way a professional will do it. Protect you AC at least, remember it's a lot more expensive than a fridge and it's a mess because you need to call someone for the brazing, vacuum, etc.

    Can this compressor comfortably run an impact wrench? I noticed you have a snap-on impact. What does your impact wrench require? My main impact requires 6.5 and I'm looking for a new compressor. Just wondering if this a good buy. My current compressor can't run my impact nor my air hammer for more than 2 seconds before the pressure drops too much. Thanks for the video.

      Sounds like you just need to add a 20 gallon tank to your existing compressor. This Makita compressor is really ideal for a nail gun application. It has the required cfm for shop air tools but the capacitors cannot handle the duty cycle for extended use. (i.e. little puffs oppose to continuous use.) See my video where I installed a compressor in the garage attic. You can configure for shop use with one tank, smaller motor and pump that would be inexpensive but capable for hobbie use. Hope this helps.

    How's it holding up? Here in northeast NC, attic temps get up to ~140 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer. Can't imagine the compressor would like that. I have plans to separate my setup much like you have, but leave the compressor under the bench with the tank(s) up in the attic.

    • @Bro_DoItYourself
      @Bro_DoItYourself 2 года назад

      Yes. My garage attic is an oven in the summer. No vent but with the cooling addition and water seperators, does not affect compressor. I need to tighten the now stretched V belts but other than that is working great. Under my workbench is where I had that mobile 20# unit. Now, a powered washer sits there. Thanks!

      Good point that has nagged me from the beginning but the wet space branch service compliance has me buttoning up as best as I can. When that drip ear filled the room with misting spray is when I decided to go that route. I just ran across your video after my 5200 stopped running. It turned out that the overload switch tripped. While watching I noticed the air dryer you added to your compressor. Wondering if you can post or send a good picture of your setup. I want to upgrade my compressor. I am going to add the 10 gal Husky tank as well. Just the one for when I am doing trim work.

    • @Bro_DoItYourself
      @Bro_DoItYourself 2 года назад

      I wanna tell ya that the added dryer is not going to work in the place of a condenser. The dryer should be attached to the outlet on the tank as the condensation builds up THERE as the air cools from the hot compression. My other video on installing a compressor in my garage attic shows the correct sequence of assembly. I suppose you could go all out and attach a 16 pass auto oil cooler in the place of the dryer in my MAC5200 vid. That would work but ya'd have to cage it to protect.

    Can you help me out? I’ve searched information on the Mac5200 which I have. My problem is it won’t build tank pressure. First thing I did was remove the big copper line that connects to the 3 way valve under the tank it it was exhausting air from the tube. I removed the cylinder head and valve cover and checked the reeds. They were just 2 pieces of rectangular pieces of steel and checked the piston rings. Everything looked good and I put it all back together. I fired it up without the copper exhaust tube connected to the exhaust side of the cylinder and there is a strong flow of air being pushed right out of the cylinder exhaust port. I reconnected everything and the tank pressure builds up to maybe 25 lbs and no more. I don’t feel or hear and air leaks. Is there anything else I can check? You seem to know a lot about this compressor.

    These capacitors should not just go bad. Something more sinister is at play. In induction motors, the start capacitor is literally behind a centrifugal switch that is closed unless the motor is running. So extended run times really have no bearing on the life of a start capacitor. What normal kills these capacitors is large voltage drops (long extension cords or bad wiring), or large voltage spikes (lightning or other power surges, etc). Well and I guess heat... Since they are mounted on top of the motor, if the temperature was continually above 200 degrees F, then that would eventually fry them too.

Motor couldn't get going but after quickly turning it on and off a bunch of times and adding some oil it filled up fast. But then same problem with the pressure up. So I'm guessing it's the start capacitor. Long winded question could you give me the specs of the cap's? Thanks! Also apparently the owners manual says I extension chords. Probably for the reason you stated.

    • @TheChristIsKing
      @TheChristIsKing 2 года назад

      @@wheeltwavel I don't know the specs. But I do know if you use too long of extension cord it won't do anything. You'll turn it on but it will make no noise or even hum, just nothing. Removed the extension cord and it went right back to working..

    On mine the engine shroud was rubbing against the air inlet pipe(from the air cleaner) after a short period....there is no way of adjusting it so it doesn't rub....you have to make the hole bigger around so it clear's better ! The oil supplied is ISO 68 which is SAE 20W....if used in cold weather ISO 32 which is SAE 10W should be used. Other than that....I love this thing ! very good for the garage, the first job I used it for ( after 30 minutes break in) was inflating 22 big truck tires 24/11.5 size with no problem at all !

Harbor Freight aluminium tank as I've blown the capacitors again w/ scalers, air hammer, impact changing out the front end components on my car. I keep blowing out the capacitors because of the addes volume. This unit is made spacifically for your applications with nailers, in particular, not garage work aside a plazma or MIG application. I would choose this unit or yhe DeWalt or Milwaukee or Rigid ... any top brand.
