Cutting branches can often lead to disease, and as a member of Greenpeace I agree with all those who stood up to the council. I am happy to report the matter to Greenpeace if required. This is a marvellous example of people standing up for our magnificent trees, our heritage. Bob Woodgate.
Thank you so much for your support. Please feel free to report the matter to Greenpeace if you think it is appropriate. As you mention yourself not everyone realises that cutting such a major branch can in fact be the beginning of the end for the tree.

The finishing comment from Island Roads is somewhat disingenuous. Originally they came for the branch but the contractors agreed with us that it was pretty high and it was stable and they would just tidy it up which they did. Island Roads then came back and said if we didn't agree to cut the branch there and then our landlord would have to do the work at his own expense and implied that actually perhaps the tree was too close to the road and he would have to pay for the whole tree to be cut. This branch is high, solid and stable. Cutting the branch would unbalance and weaken the tree. The tree cutters agreed with this at the time.
Peter, Island Roads have an expensive PR company to write these responses. It is all smoke and mirrors. Miles
It is our sincere hope this grows into something meaningful, starting with the enactment of the petition handed to the Council, signed by 51 people present. An online one is available to those wishing to join this important movement. "We the under-signed call upon the Isle of Wight Council to enact a planning policy that prioritises the protection of trees. Mandating all major tree work to be notified and requiring licence from the Tree Protecting Officer."
