Gathering Basket Homestead
Добавлен 10 дек 2021
Two homesteaders in Maine living in an old cabin, with an eighteenth century theme. We do gardening in the summer, and sew, spin, weave, and cook during winter months.
We are ‘mostly’ off grid, using a wood stove for heating and cooking, a hand well pump, and four small solar panels for the little electricity we use. In other words, we live very minimally.

Not to be nosy, but I noticed that you might have a little arthritis in your hands. Well I've been taking three tablespoons of olive oil, once day They say Costco's olive oil is very good within 2 to 3 weeks. I have no more pains in my fingers! Virgin oil one source where they get the olives! It's like a miracle!
@@johnmicalizzi126 that’s interesting. Thanks for sharing your success. I’ll make a note of this because I do have arthritis. Knees are bad too. Thank you.
Yes i was your 100th subscriber!!! Congrats

Thank you for explaining and showing what you do. Do many peopel leave out these instruction sor the say them too fast and move quickly to more advanced stage. I am new to sourdough bread making . I need the scale and that plastic shield.
@@augustasimone9323 thank you!
Thank you for posting this! I adore these tiny mundane details - my great-grandmothers probably did very similar work as part of their village's cottage industries. And I love knowing how to make something from as little as possible.
@@lindahamilton800 thank you, me too!
My Grandmother or maybe it was her daughter, my Mother taught me how to make buttonholes by hand as we didn't have a machine that had that feature on it. I don't think we slit the opening until the stitching was complete. ??? That was quite a long time ago.
@@Padraigan13 I’ve heard of doing the slit last. Thanks
@@gatheringbaskethomestead9942 I wasn't suggesting that you do that; just relaying my story about my experience. ♥
Totally charming. Thank you for this lovely technique. Can you please be more specific about the thread you are using for the buttons and buttonholes? I have some called "buttonhole twist," but it is not as thick as yours. Is this a fine crochet thread?
@@ivorybow hi, the thread for buttons is a 16 weight hand sewing thread. The thread for the button holes is the same thread for the shirt construction, a 50/3. I get most of my thread and fabric from Burnley and Trowbridge. Just google it. Thank you!
I am delighted to find your channel. This demonstration is just what I need. I plan to make a lady's traditional Turkish quilted long coat, and I want to put these button holes on it. Thank you!
Sounds like a great project. Thanks!

Lovely little buttons, I'd never thought about making a button in this way! Thanks.
@@goinblinddoggone thank you!
Thank you, that's a really great demonstration! I haven't seen the bartacks done like that before. Beautiful work.
Thank you!
I like it that you are doing it the traditional way. I have a sewing machine, but, a lot of things I also do by hand stitching...buttons, button holes, hems, zips, etc; my sewing machine is a simple one and only does straight stitches.
@@OutlawDressmaker thank you! I love hand sewing. Hoping to video several projects this winter.
Oh how I loath listening to the Gennie drone away. Hubby loves to get right up in the morning and get it running. I actually don't mind no power for the most part I just run the gennie for a hour or two morning and night to keep the fridge cold draw water and blow the heat form the stove through the house for a bit.

Psalms is all about food preparation. Most of the Bible is about food prep and surviving the wrath of the rulers. I hate rulers. I've always used the tip of my finger to my elbow and got along fine.
You are on track to success. I just upgraded my solar.
@@offgridamy717 that’s great! We even had a power outage today. No problem, just flip the switch. Thanks!
Good start :) Very important tips 👍, I have lived 100% off grid full time for 11 year so prepping is pretty easy for people like us :) I never know the grid is down unless I get company because they are cold ! You will see my wood hauling video's coming soon :) Take care stay warm"
Looking forward to seeing that!
I am with you 100%. Who knows what kind of damage is coming. I've been a Mobillite for a few years now (car/van/RV living) waiting to see what the weather will do. I don't think being stationary with power and water will do anything but make one a target in whatever strategy is enforced in the upcoming mass field control. I'm sure everything will be handed over to the richest people because they will know how to dispose of all the wealth of the country appropriately. Stay tuned, it will be wild.
I couldn’t agree more. Thanks!
So cool!

I love the Commonground Fair & I've missed it since moving to the West coast. My very first time going was in 1981 when it was in Windsor. I worked at the fair for many years in food booths as well.
