"the sign of Jonah" as of a `type` to Jesus, is wrongly understood by Matthew as being his "descent, ascent and resurrection" as is popularly thought. Few today bother to really study the details - about that Fish - and just like Matthew in the first century could not know, so too these fathers of the Church did not know the significance of Jonah being spat out onto land by a "great fish". So I will tell you here: for the Philistines on the coast who witnessed the event believed in Dagon and the deity's avatar, Kulullu, who is sent periodically from Dagon to the people, as and when necessary. So too, the Assyrians believed in Dagon and his avatar. So when Jonah turned up with his witnesses who believed, they took him to be a `god`, not a prophet. And it was because he was to them a `god`, that they repented. Indeed, God did not send Jonah for the sake of Nineveh, but so that he would return home and testify to these events, in the hope that an apostate people would follow the `good example` of those Ninevites and repent. But they did not; they rejected Jonah; just as they rejected Jesus....and just as then (when God used Assyria to bring desolation upon the northern kingdom of Israel), so today, Jerusalem's desolation is at hand (see Luke 21:20), because Judaism has a habit of avoiding those sent them, whether that be "the prophets", or "Jonah" or finally, "Jesus".
