    Nice video and composition, really enjoyed it. I came here as I just got one of these myself in an open air flea market. If I may make a suggestion, this camera has a piece of protective optical glass, kind of like a coated UV filter right under the lens bezel that says Ricoh Zoom Lens; there was plenty of haze under this and front element of the lens which accumulates over the years. I turned mine on and used telephoto button to extend the lens, you will see three tiny screws around the lens barrel, remove these and and the lens bezel comes off easily in your hand; behind the bezel there are 3 small set screws which you can remove, and you can now clean the protective glass fully and the front of the actual lens which is exposed now. Put back together and enjoy. This should eliminate any flare or ghosting in your pictures :).

    Hi Dean. Ive got a Nikon F3. Put my first roll of 35mm Kodak Colorplus through and scanned them myself with my Plustek 8100. Mine don't appear to be sharp, and some landscape shots look over saturated. Need some help. All were scanned at 300 dpi in Silverfast SE. Perhaps i've done something wrong. Lens? Metering? Could i send some through. Cheers from Sydney

  • @randallstewart175
    @randallstewart175 3 года назад

    IMO to make this choice, you first must define the beginner's goals. If the goal is to just take technically respectable photos and focus on composition, lighting and such, then a fully automatic exposure 35mm, perhaps with manual focus, seems best. Here the photographer does not care to learn about how to manage the technicals of shutter speed, aperture, film processing, etc. There is a huge range of point-n-shoot cameras out there for starters. If the goal is to get hands on, learn how to use a light meter, how variations of shutter speed and aperture effect the image, and set these yourself, then a manual camera like his FG-20 is fine. Actually, in its effort to sell into the consumer market with cheaper cameras, Nikon provided the perfect choice. Around 1980, it produced the EM, which is auto-exposure with practically no user adjustment to the exposure set by the camera. Around 1982, this was replaced by the FG, which offers auto (programmed) exposure or full manual control. In 1984, the FG- was replace by the FG-20, which was an FG stripped of its auto-exposure and TTL flash metering. (Nikon thought the FG sales were eating into sales of its newer, more expensive FA model.)

    There is not a problem with the autofocus system here, but it helps to understand how it works. At closer distances, it uses an active system which projects a beam of infrared light and measures its reflection, setting the focus distance. It is very accurate, but it can be fooled if there something in front of the subject to reflect the light, like a glass window. It will focus on the glass, not the subject behind the glass. A lot of P-n-S 35mm cameras use this system. However, it is not so accurate at longer distances. So, beyond a certain distance, a different autofocus system kicks in, a contrast comparing system just like that used in all modern 35mm SLRs. Not quite as accurate, but more so at longer distances. This system is not fooled by a glass window, but it does require a certain light level and subject contrast to function. With either system, you have to be very careful to spot your focus target accurately on the subject. Finally, you want to keep an eye on the rangefinder read-out in the viewfinder to make sure the autofocus isn't locked on something else, not your subject. Seem too complex? Not so much in real life, but then you wanted autofocus. Would rather focus manually? It can be done with these cameras, but its no pleasure. Get a different camera in that event. The ultimate weakness of the GA645 and its companion models is its total dependence on electronics. There is (to my knowledge anyway) no special problem with these cameras re their electronics, but that will be the source of problems as they age, and repairs at that level are probably not available, lacking any repair parts or people who know how to do the job.

      Very informative mate. Sounds similar to the Contax G1/G2 just got to keep a good eye on the distance scale to figure out if you need to attempt to meter again
