Never Print off Register Again! Make Flats instead.

Pulling a fresh print only to realize that the text is backward or the colors are off-register is a right of passage for all printmakers. It’s discouraging when it happens, but it teaches us to take better care when transferring our sketches onto wood or lino blocks. My students make flats for every print to ensure the text is carved in reverse and their blocks print on the register. In this vi...

    Great video and really helpful. I used to do print making in college many years ago and I want to pick it back up so I can do prints for local bands. Do you have any recommendations of printers that can handle transparent film? I've done some research but wouldn't mind your input if you have a preference. I'm hoping to stick to the standard 18x24 poster size. Thanks!

    I've been looking into gomuban lately. Not a fan of linoleum, so I've been looking for something else to try. I really like carving woodblocks, but I figure I'd try something a bit more malleable. I appreciate the examples and quick overview. Thanks for making this video!

    I can't find your video on why you love printmaking with gomuban.

  • @mayamaven
    @mayamaven Год назад

    What is the shelf life of gomuban? Linoleum has a pretty short shelf life, and some of the rubber blocks I've carved have grown crumbly with age. What is the longest you've had gomuban stay carveable and printable?

    • @mayamaven
      @mayamaven Год назад

      Sorry, I didn't finish the video before asking. I defer to your experience, though I wonder WHY it doesn't deteriorate like everything else.

      @@mayamaven Hello and thank you for asking! Gomuban (Japanese vinyl) does not expire. I’m not sure why. I asked builders and contractors here in the US if they know anything like it, and they don’t. One time I bought a roll of battleship-grey linoleum for a bunch of workshops. It expired, getting tough and crumbly during a workshop. I’ll never go back to that again!

      @blockpaperprint Год назад

      @@mayamaven and when I say “does not expire”, I should asterisk that with “at least six years”.” I have a test block I’ve been carving for that long; so far it’s the same as the day I bought it.

Deep bows to your passion for printmaking and your talent and your entrepreneurship (the last being something I failed to develop, apparently, from the womb to tomb...sigh).

    I've been cutting my western paper so that I have a right angle corner for registration. I'd really like to start incorporating a nice deckled edge though. How do you go about registering your prints when they have a torn edge?

    • @blockpaperprint
      @blockpaperprint Год назад

      Hi Jacob, Instead of blue tape, use something thicker to build the registration. I like using old gift cards or store credit cards like iTunes or Amazon store ones. Be sure to tape them down! Be gentle when placing the deckle against the registration. Does that make sense?

      @@blockpaperprint That's super helpful! I like to use extra thick duct tape and I think that should work similarly. Thank you! I'm excited to see more videos from you
