They are also essential to balance the elephant in case the front legs faltered. I thought that the Deadman on a woodworking bench is doing the same task as the hind legs thus prefer using the phase ...

@@maxwaldburg4286 Thank you for your visit and the good words. Yes, the butterfly joints are for holding the 2 sides of the boards together. The two boards are actually from the same teak tree that I planted 30 some years ago. It died from some mysterious reason. I had the tree cut out to lumber after air dried for a few years. Sadly the center one which was cut to the thickness of 4 inches cracked in the middle. I decided to cut the lumber at the crack and joining them with glue and the butterflies. The separating pieces made it easier to flatten by my jointer and the planer.

I do love Thailand and the Thai people and missed them when I visited home. Both now have a special place in my heart. I am curious do you have any advice for finding affordable wood? I have found it challenging to find wood suitable for making a bench (western or roman) especially when it comes to quality hardwoods. I do not care if it is fancy or not, most interested in functionality. Also, I wanted to comment on your English. It is very good! Well thank you for your time Sir. Have a great day!

@@user-qy2ss1cd6q I am glad that you have developed a positive attachment to Thailand and the Thai. I believe that one day you will be fluent in Thai because you have set a resolution to do so. I think the economy way to get wood to build a sturdy workbench is to use a 2x4 hardwood and joint them to make the top. The cheaper way is to use plywood laying on top of each other to the desired thickness. Are you in any of the Thai woodworking group? Occasionally, they have a class to build a workbench and all the materials are provided. At the end of the class, you would take home the workbench you build. Where about are you in Thailand? I live in Chiangmai and if you are by any chance in the area you are welcome to visit my shop and we can exchange knowledge about woodworking.

Thank you for your through attention. The wooden knobs are the anti racking or pinching when the workpiece is clamped above the center line of the vice. Hey Hai. I have 2 questions. How would you rate this one compared to the other one? Do you make many dowels? BTY, thinking about your need to round over the tips, cut a "V" notch, glue in strips of sandpaper and drop tip in "V" notch and spin to sand the tip. No more turning machines on and off. Should we try making one?

Hi Russ, thank you for your V notch idea. I will definitely make one to use in my shop. It will be useful to round over a tip of a rod. In the beginning, I made dowels for my specific project. Later on when I got the jigs, I gathered the scraps cut outs and made them for future uses. It also helps tidy up my shop. The dowel jig on the band saw was designed for making dowels from the Siamese Rosewood which is considered one of the densest wood in Thailand. After I used it, the other advantage to the other one came out. It can cut a smaller diameter dowel than the other one. It can make a 1/8" dowel on a hard and medium hard wood. The other plus side is the smooter surface on the dowel. I would consider the angle iron one is a quick and dirty dowel maker and the band saw on an elaborate dowel maker.
