What one must notice is the ABSOLUTE adhesions of Nuno’s center of mass to that of the horse. To the modern eye this might seem a bit loose in the leg, a bit slouched in posture. Those are cosmetic. The subtle art of true horsemanship is this: Keep the horse between oneself and the ground. I always ask my students, “What holds you on the horse?” Think a bit… The only correct answer is “gravity”. GRAVITY holds you on the horse, just as it holds the horse on the ground. Everything else is artifice.

In the schaukel, observe the heaviness of Nuno’s seat; he sits not on the horse, but around him. The legerite comes not from lightness, but from the adhesive heaviness of the seat. Gravity is what holds you on the horse.

BLIND? What do you see at : 4:05 to 4:52? - there is nothing of lightness and that is NOT at all a criticism rather pointing out to open people's eyes to see what he is doing ! And his horses are after these action really "compact" ,together and collected! The horses will be "truly" light after they are challenged ! And listen at 9:04 what he is saying over and over : " ..ROUND.." and when you watch his arms,you can see,what he says to the horse later in words: "NO...NO...NO....and then,when the horse is truly through in the whole body not only in the neck: YES! 7:52 to 8:29 - watch his arms - they are absolutely IMMOBIL ! - NOT giving the seat behind the vertical until the horse gives- then he says ; YES and he gets light! Are people blind ? Or do they just see what they want to see? If a MASTER like NUNO needs to do this in that stable and strong way to get then the horse light - how does anybody think they can/should do this without that POWER ?

I was there when he was doing this demonstration. I rode that stallion a number of times. I think Don Nuno died that night. He was due to ride my stallion the next day. Very great shame. Greatly missed. The stallion is called "Castellenato", magnificent boy he was.

Dressage is an art and someone who has developed their art to this level deserves your respect; especially if your art is nowhere near this level and your experience is less.This is a beautiful ride and a great example of how you slowly and methodically move the horses feet and "put them together" under the rider. His conversation with this horse is a little bit like, "okay, You have to be quicker in this leg and reach under a little more. Okay, now; here are my inside aids and they move this foot here; under my seat. Now don't forget I have outside aids too! Keep your straightness. Okay okay good boy. Your a king, good boy." Its beautiful, its meditative, its a real dialogue....and I honor it. To compare it to a competition ride is to take it totally out of context; one has nothing to do with the other. If you want to compare modern competitive Dressage to Classical you can find entire websites devoted to it and other like minded people to have a conversation with about it.

the problem is not that people use spurs and whips, it's that they don't use them PROPERLY. The point of the spur comes into play when the rider's leg is so sensitive and so independent that he/she can give smaller, lighter, more precisely aimed aids... And the whip is never EVER supposed to be used as punishment, but instead another aid used w care, precaution and delicacy to help the horse understand something better. Unfortunately people use both of these aids prematurely and abusively. :(

Not only dressage, I'd love to see this horsemanship everywhere! I'm sick of seeing people hit, yell and force their horses - What Nuno does it was we should be aspiring to.

Here in the beginning when moving sideways, the haunches are coming before shoulders in some steps, but in his book "Reflections on equestrian art" he emphasizes that this isn´t right. Can someone explain me this?

It's beautiful. I'm learning still and want to compete in eventing, but my instructor teaches differently to modern dressage. He teaches me teh best points of english and western riding so the point is to get the horse going supple, relaxed and soft while I ride softly with ease and look like I'm doing nothing at all...which after looking at all these classical dressage videos is pretty similar. Maybe we need more of this in the equestrian world.

@Igorfun I agree with you (mostly). I was responding to a comment about how dressage judges shold see this video and that compitition horses didn't measure up to this type of riding and I felt that wasn't fair, Compititon unlike classical needs to get the largest movements possible while remaining withing the training scale. then I simply pointed out that this ride had it's problems too. Believe me when I say I know well about the years of commitment for moments of perfection (if you are lucky)

@wejump2 I don't think it's fair to point out the shortcomings in this ride. Mister Oliveira is riding a student's horse to improve the horse, so off course it's not perfect, that is what horse riding is about , getting improvement by working the horse in a well thought out way. Nobody can get on a poorly trained horse and do fantastic movements, it's takes years off commitment. So to judge the work of Mister Oliveira based on the performance of the horse in this video would be incorrect.

@VHZMH I don't think that's a fair statement. Compitition riders are trying to get the largest movements possible while keeping the horse relaxed. This ride has it's problems too. The reinback shuffels, the piaffe has little lift in back. The walk is often tight. The trot lacks the suspension of todays horses. Having said that yes the horse is supple both in the neck and laterally. I don't think it's fair to compare a ride for the joy of it to one where you need to get the highest score.

@blackerthanblackdog First, you can bet Oliveira didn't torment his horses with Rollkur. Performance like this requires not only training, but trust and some freedom for the horse to find his own centre of balance. Second, there is a beauty that comes from the pursuit of art, not the acquisition of medals at any cost.
