SHOP TALK ep. 02. When to fix the rust, and when to replace it!
When it comes to rusty old cars, the hardest thing to figure out sometimes is where does it all stop? Do I fix what’s there, or cut it out and replace it with a brand new panel. I’ve been fighting with that on the Nova and decided to bring my struggle to you guys so that maybe what I’ve dealt with helps you with your project!

Half a Nova is half finished? Just keep throwing sheet metal at it!
Просмотров 27614 дней назад
The outer cowls fought me, no big shock, the covers did too. But they’re on finally, the cowl plenum is all painted and the front end actually looks like something. Plenty more to come. The Nova’s coming together only a ton of time and money to go.
How much bracing does a subframe car really need? Finally cutting out the Nova’s rusty floor pan
Просмотров 229Месяц назад
I finally get around to hacking the floor out of the Nova. We’ve all seen this done on these subframe cars with rotisseries, a frame jig, or whole lot of well thought out bracing. We’ve got none of that. Subframes out, rear end gets dropped, body is on Jack stands and the only bracing in sight is in door jambs. We’ll talk more about all that a little later. For now the floor pan is out, we’ve g...
Spraying Mastercoat Primer with NO painting experience. How hard can it be?
Просмотров 936Месяц назад
I’m not a paint guy. Not even close. So naturally I decided to give it try with this Mastercoat primer. We have a paint gun and a bare firewall, what more could you ask for?
Is the Mastercoat primer and AG111 really the best? Restoring the subframe of the Nova.
Просмотров 601Месяц назад
Back from break! I worked on as many things as I could. First up is the Nova’s subframe. It was dirty, rusty and ugly. Now that the body mounts are all good we had to address the ugly. Luckily the rest of the subframe was solid, a wire wheel was enough to clean her to the point we could lay down some paint. I bought into the internet hype and bought the Mastercoat primer and AG111 top coat comb...
Not what I was hoping for

Click bait? Probably. But with another crusty surprise from our beloved Nova, a bunch of other jobs going on but nothing finished and life outside the shop being somehow busier than usual, content is running low and frustration is high. It’s time to reset and figure out where we go next.
SHOP TALK ep. 01. Why don’t YOU own a hotrod?
Просмотров 2652 месяца назад
Changing things up this week. This is Shop Talk, a feature we’ll be doing going forward where I can talk to you guys about hotrods and classic cars in general, what it takes to build them, anything I wish I knew before hand, whatever tips or advice I’ve picked up along the way, and anything else we come up with that may help anyone watching get into working on these beaten down classics. We’ll ...
71 Nova Subframe repair! Are frame repair plates worth it?
Просмотров 2682 месяца назад
The nova’s subframe is actually pretty solid. Everywhere but the body mounts, those are roached. We could either buy a whole new subframe (no thanks) or buy a used subframe and hope we find one with good body mounts. Problem is, the body mounts are usually the first thing to rust on these chassis’s, and if we found one that was mint, it would likely cost the same as a new one or more because it...
The Nova loses all support! Suspension stripped, and subframe out!
Просмотров 2313 месяца назад
I’ve known for a while that the subframe needed help. The front body mounts were toasted, and I guessed that the rears were no better. With the floor install coming I really wanted subframe all taken care of so we can line it up with new hardware to the new floor pan. But in order to do that we have to address the rust. And in order to do THAT, I had to strip the subframe down, pull it out, and...
Something actually fit?! 71 Nova Dash repair!
Просмотров 5173 месяца назад
Rust repair….It’s always rust repair. After finding rot in the dash panel I decided to just replace the whole dash top rather than try to just patch it up. For once, an aftermarket panel actually fit really well! The alignment was a pain but in the end it went together very nicely. Follow us on Instagram! WHY IS THERE ALWAYS RUST?! 71 Nova moving forward or backwards?
Просмотров 1833 месяца назад
Well, this one went about 5 different directions. All i wanted was to clean up the firewall and the cowl of Nova to lay down some primer and make it look a little cleaner. But the car had other plans. As you may have already seen, I already stopped once to fix the rust that popped up in the cowl. Turns out that wasn’t the only ugliness that was still hiding. We did finally make some progress af...
WORSE THAN I THOUGHT! Hidden rust rears its ugly head! Chevy Nova Rust repair.
Просмотров 3833 месяца назад
Well, this one annoyed me. While working to get the Nova prepped for some primer, I found more rust, and it couldn’t of been in a worse spot to get at. I figured it ran even deeper than what I could see, so the repair got a little complicated. But it’s finally patched up and now we can move on to more of the fun stuff! THE LITTLE THINGS MATTER! Powering through the odds and ends on the NOVA!

Well, we’re waiting on parts, that means I need to fight through the procrastination that has left some of the Nova’s finer details about half done. It’s hard to stay motivated when all that’s staring you down is the nitty gritty but we power through it and keep the Nova moving along knowing that the fun stuff is coming soon! AFTERMARKET PANEL NIGHTMARE! Chevy Nova outer cowl panel INSTALLED!
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.4 месяца назад
More progress on the 71 Nova as the driver side cowl panel goes on for good! I find out the hard way that just because parts are new doesn’t mean they fit. But after way to much hammering, grinding, cutting and welding it finally surrenders and settles into its new home!

Subscribed. Looking forward to following along as you put new life into the Nova. Its a challenging project and can relate as one living in a rust belt.
Thank you! Challenging for sure but it’ll be worth it 👍
The "No Regrets Nova"😂. It's OK DJ Of course you're going to have 2nd and 3rd thoughts. You've got this💪✔️🇺🇸👍
Take care of yourself DJ, Your health comes first. That's the cool thing about the project car. The Novas just there. It's not going anywhere. Improvise, adapt, overcome👍
BTW: Happy Thanksgiving to you & the Family 😊
No regrets, just learn for next time! Happy Thanksgiving.
Hello,"Shop 81" I was analyzing your channel and saw that in your channel have some problem, That's why your channel is not much growing and not getting much engagement, If you can solve these problems, Your channel will grow like a storm. If you tell I can tell these problems. Where can I tell? Here or email?
😂😂 Nice, If only it was that easy, but your hard work does not go unnoticed💪👏. Let's Go. No idea Nova😊👍🇺🇲
Nice work, step by step👍💪. Do what you Can do.
Always!
Nice build. Did you weld the whole perimeter of the cowl panel?
Thank you! I basically plug welded in the factory spot weld locations, and added extra stitch welds where I could just for good measure.
69 nova got my mastercoat primer and top coat l like the work you are doing great job!!
That’s awesome! Good luck!
What’s everyone else working on?
👏👏 what did that weigh? Dragging it out. I'm literally shocked. It wasn't in super bad condition👍
Keep grinding, let's, let's keep turning the page on what's next. It's not gonna be pretty but it will be better🫰💪
Decision time? Frame rails. This is no joke. This is the structural integrity of the No idea Nova. Knowledge is power DJ😊 do your research
Working towards a decision. Next “shop talk” coming out in the next couple weeks should have a more decisive stance lol
IDK? Can ya weld it Decently after the clean up? Saving that $ would be nice. You're going to need it later@@Shop_81
I need some mastercoat and ag111 but it says sold out on the website
Yeah I got lucky, didn’t watch it for too long before it was in stock. Keep an eye on the estimated in stock dates. I know they’ve been shifting because they had material issues or something. But at least give a reference. When I bought it was back sold out within a day though.
I’d brush the first coat to get into the nooks and crannies and then spray the second coat for even coverage.
I did consider that. I’d probably do that next time. Would definitely go faster.
I've been waiting all day to simply relax and watch this. Because this is cool. This is good this is🇺🇲💪👍 NOVA! From the ground up.
You are cleaning it up nice but don't waste your time on things that are covered up. If it's all good, ITS GOOD😅
In hindsight you could have been playing Red solo cup in the background as you mix 😂
RED SOLO CUP😊 DONT FUCK IT UP😂.. ITS.... THE NOOOVVAA sorry 😂
👏👏✔️ 1st time painting with that stuff
Vocals better for sure👍
Nice Job. Looks good. Looking forward to seeing the AG111. I bought a few cans of Mastercoat and will be doing the same soon. Not a ton of info out there so very helpful to see. Thanks.
Thank you! I’ll be shooting the top coat out of the gun down the road, and ill give any updates I find on the finished product as it gets exposed to more hardships
Watching this grunt work. You have to appreciate the guy who came up with the idea for the acid bath. The dip simplicity
WOW💪 2 coat perfection😊 for the No Idea Nova👏
Can't wait for what's next. 😳💪 let's go Nova
With I had that option, would’ve been way less work lol
Looks very nice. You're doing it right.
Thank you!
My 72 had rust in the roof skin almost in the same place. Fisher Body must have put in the seam sealer before the roof went on. Had rust in the inerstructure as well. I just patched the structure and moved on. Keep moving forward, great videos.
Yeah there’s something ugly going on in there. Exactly right though, just keep moving forward. Appreciate the support!
Keep pushing thru it every thing you do to that nova is a learning curve stay focused you will do it and it will be very rewarding!!!
Thank you! We’re getting there, it’ll be fun to see it start going back together.
Is that a bullet hole😅
Improvise adapt overcome💪🇺🇲 This is the "No idea Nova" project. Perfection is unobtainable but this is awesome!! Work safe💪✔️
Everytime you poke and prode into another aspect....😂 it's always WTF!!
Your strength and patience is commendable👏👏
Get some rest, you earned it. 👍🇺🇲. 2weeks can't wait😳😂
We only got a quick glimpse , but those floor pans look nice! 👍
Love the message. I'm in the same boat as you. Just bought a project and learning as I go. With this being my first time mig welding, I started in the non-visible areas to practice, floors...etc
Hell yeah! What did you pick up?
I wish you were my neighbor or some cool guy.I knew down the road😂we would have 3 Novas
📷 Lady👍
You have to give this car, this thing that you are working on a name
Find a way, find the Deals. It will happen slowly but surely and when it's done I'll buy it😂❤
Names?? For all your welding how about "SPOT" the Nova
Helluva week! Friday Get after it! Little by little💪
Words well spoken. My 2 cents is tools, tools and more tools. I have been collecting tools for over 30 years and I still don’t have enough to get all the jobs done. Buy a good air compressor, you’ll be money and time ahead
Even though you don't know what you're doing. It is so cool. What are you gonna name it?
Ya got to give it a name? At some point? The "No Idea Nova!"😅
I was tool junkie before I started to doing cars so I agree 100%
@@jeffclark3924 Back in the day when I had my own company.I bought an ingersoll air compressor 💲💲 I understand the cost Fun to warch
The great thing about watching your channel is Nova....Guys are different not Chevelle Guys, we're not Camaro, guys.We like novas and that's cool IMHO
Absolutely...Just cut off the garbage and put in something better
Even though it's a pain in the ass, You know you're doing the right thing.💪👏
Don't look at the whole Forrest. Just take things tree by tree😂. Well done 👏 ✔️
The rear body mounts finally😂👍👏👏 , something just goes in, relatively easy
Always embrace the alternative measure! Cuz when it comes down to it😏 what else is there? Work safe😊
This is just down and dirty niddy gritty front end work!💪 Send me your address.I will send you a high quality back support bro
I really enjoyed the fire pit at my friend's house last night. But seeing the front end of the Nova on🔥 was just as good😂
Tip Of'' the Cap to the female camera operator 👏👏👍
OMG!!! Dude💪👏👏 You yanked it right out In your regular everyday guy garage! Impressive.
@@joelvanhandel1352 Nothing fancy here, just trying to make it happen lol
Great job working on the Nova! I am running the poly body bushings on two of my Novas and can’t tell the difference between the rubber or poly.
@@jeffclark3924 thanks man. Appreciate the feedback on the bushings, good to know!
more nova videos i got a 1970 nova
All things considered that's a nice tight fit👍
Nothing is ever simple but keep rolling💪🇺🇸 Doctor Frankenstein😊
BTW: Take care of your back bro. God Only gives you one spine in a lifetime😏 work safe
@@joelvanhandel1352 thanks! And doing my best with the back lol
Great job on all the metal work. The large holes that you filled in are for rubber plugs that hold on the firewall insulation. Check on my Novas, both of my cars are AC cars.
@@jeffclark3924 makes sense why I wasn’t sure, that was all long gone by the time this car came to me lol thanks for the info!
What a difference👏👍 God Bless the ShopVac
@@joelvanhandel1352 I should buy stock in shop vac bags lol
This is really cool to watch. Thanks for the hard work on the rebirth👏👍 remember improvise, Adapt, overcome....but always safety first💪🇺🇲
The resurrection is never easy. I will be watching bring that old Nova back to life💪🇺🇸 71' 😏 What were the factory specs?
The VIN never lies😂. Work safe on her guys
@@joelvanhandel1352 thank you! Car was a factory V8 car. I believe it was originally a 350 car, the fenders and all the badging appeared to be original. Not an SS car as far as I can tell, VIN didn’t identify SS on pre 72 Novas, and there’s nothing on the car that makes me think it was.
@@Shop_81 That's cool, just a regular old Nova. That's going to get a rebirth👏👍🇺🇲 Do good guys, work safe😊
Just make it what you want it to be.What you think it could be? What you dream it could be. Novas always ♥️ em'
Great job on the metal work and videos. I had to re-align the sub frame on my 69 Nova because the steering column would not line up with the steering box.
@@jeffclark3924 thank you! Mine still lined up with a little encouragement but I haven’t had the subframe off the car yet so we’ll see.
I have had pretty good luck with using AMD sheet metal on my 72 Nova. Quarter panel fit really good.
@@jeffclark3924 good to know about the quarters! I’ve had pretty good luck with AMD for the most part, and if they don’t fit, that’s why we have grinders and welders lol
When you keep doing this for about 45 years you'll get used to that aftermarket sheet metal. this aftermarket stuff is pretty bad. Most of the stuff get you in a ballpark particular they are putting their lines where they need to be the right contours. Quarter panels and fenders and door skins
@@tonykerr8147 I’ve definitely been lucky so far up until now. I’d rather not have to chop up quarters to make em fit but we do what we gotta do right? lol
G'day nice work mate
Thank you!
Well done!
Thank you, appreciate it!
G'day mate nice video
G'day from Australia just found your channel and subbed mate. Love American cars
