Utah Bee Man - Glade Sessions
США
Добавлен 21 янв 2020
My name is Glade Sessions and I've been keeping bees in northeastern Utah since 2015. I started with 2 hives and lost both of them my first winter. The next spring I went to 20 hives (and managed to keep them all alive for the next 2 years) and immersed myself in everything beekeeping to learn as quickly as I could. I believe in being self-sustaining with my bees so I raise my own queens (except for a few purchased queens to try new genetics now and then) and have come up with a management style that seems to work well in a climate with hot dry summers and cold winters. I hope that by sharing what I'm doing it will help a few other beekeepers enjoy this absolutely fascinating world of beekeeping.

Easy Honey Warming Box

I needed a better way to de-crystallize my honey. This honey warming box cost less than $50 in parts and was an easy build. Great content!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Glade, that was a fun YT to listen to. Great answers to a good question. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it
Great interview! I love the connection to nature and the divine beauty of the hive that makes beekeepers pause and soak in the awesomeness that they are privileged to be apart of.
Glad you liked it.
Subscribed boss! Great question for all of us to remember during the hard times!
Thanks for subscribing! Glad you enjoyed it.
Of all the NAHBE content, sir, I think this video was my favorite. Thank you for asking those questions!
Thanks! Everyone has their own favorite thing when working bees. Mine is the smell of a healthy hive, white wax, and a whole frame of grafted queen cells.
Look at the grin on every Beekeepers Face when they think about that question.👍 The Never Ending Journey of Beekeeping.
You can tell it in their face that beekeeping has become part of who they are.
Hi Glade. Thank you for sharing. Jason is right that smell is just amazing, you almost can't describe that smell of a healthy hive. For me it's a hard choice the smell vs the buzz. I don't know when you open that lid and you are in that moment and experience the harmony of a healthy hive. I'm not sure we can fully describe that moment to people that don't or haven't experienced it. It's Joy...
Smell is definitely at the top of my list.
Hello First
Hello there!
53 degrees today in Utah Valley. Bees were out in force
Thanks for sharing your project. I'm sure that it will be very handy. The few times I've de-crystallized a pail of honey I thought I was done but when I poured it out there was still 1-2" of crystallized honey on the bottom of the pail.
I'm finding the same thing. It seems to help if I can mix it up a couple of times.
🤔You are welcome to use the Metric system if you like as for me, I am Imperial all the way, I like being different. 😂 That freezer looks like it'll work great for you, that is what I was planning on doing. Thanks for sharing your time with us, Blessed Days...
Metric does take a bit of getting used to, but it makes the math way easier. 😉 The warming box is working great. I should have done it years ago.
Maybe I missed it in the video, but what wattage bulbs did you use? I've thought of doing something similar, but with a terrarium heat mat.
They are just 60w bulbs (that's all I had). I figured I'd have to go to 75w but it seems just fine with these. I thought about using reptile heat bulbs but this is working great.
@utahbeeman Good to know. Thanks for the response!
Thank you for your video. I am a beekeeper in Iceland and I do not use top ventilation on my insulated horizontal hives (Lazutin hives). I use 6 inches of insulation at the top and don't put any sugar on top of the frames. In the spring, I am always surprised to see how little honey the bees have consumed.
Thanks for watching! I love to hear how other beekeepers do things.
good video! hope the bees survive the winter for you!
I work out in your area and live in southern ut. My brother and I will be attending and I will be sure and catch up with you there!
Greetings and gratitude from Eden, UT. Glad for this last round of warm weather. My bees are now tucked in for a long snowy winter. Thanks for sharing your beekeeping knowledge and adventures. Good holidays to you, sir!
great display!!! see ya there at Bee Expo!
Try powdered sugar gets bees 🐝 to groom 🎩 Mites fall to the bottom of the Hive
Nice video ❤
Thanks.
Hello are you LDS?
Yes. I am.
My hive counts in Denver were higher this year as well. I carry a car battery to each of my 25 hives, heavy and clunky. It may be time to invest in your vaporizer. Fast work!
I have a portable generator that I used. It works fine, but just cumbersome to haul around. I like this one much better.
It's that time of year.👍
Yup. Time to get them buttoned up for winter.
How many yards do you have and about what is the distance between them?
I have 4 yards. 3 that are on friends' property and 1 at my house. They are about 6 miles from the house and 2-3 miles apart.
@ sweet!
i just purchased one of the compact ones! im excited to get it. i got one of the OG ones that first came out but im excited for 2! 2 is always better than 1 haha
I thank you. Especially appreciate hearing your timeline for here in northern Utah. Cheers!!
What part of Utah are you in? I'm located in northern Utah as well. up by Brigham city Utah.
I'm in Eden, east of Ogden. You inspired me to finish up my winter prep yesterday before today's cold and snow. Thanks
Glade, here is the information that you need talking about insulation on top of the hive presented by Bill Hesbach, talking about the condensing hive 2020.10.27 Wintering Bees ruclips.net/video/KKCilStfD7c/видео.htmlsi=sA4nJszKTck1c7VR
Beautiful weather day after day. I too had poor post treatment mite counts after using apivar this fall. Will be doing oav as well. Cheers!
Hi from southern New Zealand 👋😃 Don't panic, I think you're seeing a climb in phoretic mites ( mites on the bee's ) because your formic has slowed brood production, nows absolutely a great time to use oxalic acid vapour and really slam them down, it can be quite frightening when you see massive mite counts after a treatment, just hitting them again that's the key and you'll get a great result I'm sure because most of the mites are currently hanging out on your bee's. Looks like you got it started as soon as you could and you'll definitely get a good knock down 👍😃 Ian steppler Canadian beekeeper had a similar issue and he's now pulling zero counts so hang in there👍😃
I think you are spot on with what was happening. I've done a couple of OAV since then and my numbers are much better. Not quite where I'd like them but I think they are going to be good. We'll know in late March if it was enough or not. Thanks for the comment.
Well it does appear to be that time of year, mite counts and treatments for Winter sett up. Thanks for sharing, Blessed Days...
You know, they make coolers with wheels on em for us folks who don't have any friends! Maybe there is a bee hive marketing opportunity for someone! You got it done though. I always get someone to help me but I make sure they are well protected. If I do it often enough, I have to go get one of those wheeled coolers! hahaha
HA ENJOYED YOUR VIDEO, I HAVE TO MOVE HIVES THE SAME WAY I PUT MINE IN A TRAILER I AM 65 A WOMAN IT IS JUST SO VERY HARD I TRYED A DIFFERENT WAY THIS YEAR I HAD TO MOVE SOME BECAUSE WHERE I KEPT MY BEES THE LADY DIED. SO WHAT I DID WAS USE THE NUC BOXES TORE THE HIVES DOWN AND PUT THEM IN AS MANY NUC BOXES I NEEDED AND MOVED THEM AND PUT THEM BACK TOGETHER. AT THERE NEW LOCATION I LEFT A BOX TO CATCH ANY STRAY BEES WHEN IT GOT EVENING I WENT BACK AND GOT THEM AND TOOK THEM TO THERE NEW PLACE. I TELL YOU IT WAS JUST SO MUCH EASIER TO DO IT THIS WAY. EVERY ONE MADE OUT FINE. EVEN THE BEE KEEPER. GOD BLESS HOPE YOU HAVE A VERY BLESSED WEEK.
Thank you for your comment. I don't like to move hives so I only do it when I have to.
Looks like work! I love seeing how different folks do things. Always something to do!🐝😎
I'm constantly watching how other people do things, hoping I can learn a little better way for my situation.
Good job done but it is so hard by yourself. I have my son come over and help me when I move bees. You sure have a nice looking yard there for the bees. Have a great day and thanks for sharing.
Thanks 👍
Oh ya the biggens can start picking on the littles this time of year. Weight does seem to be an issue with transporting hives solo, not to bad when you have help but solo it takes real work. Ya need you a cart that is about the same height as your bench that way you could slide them off onto it, that is what I have had to do. Thanks for sharing you time with us, Blessed Days...
I need a hive lifter that will just let me pick it up an put in the truck.
Thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks for watching.
Caught ya on the replay, thanks for sharing your time with us. Blessed Days...
Good stuff, thanks for sharing your time with us. Blessed Days...
Thanks for watching!
Liquid gold, that fortifies and sustains human life! 🤗😋
Well done! It is nice to have it behind you. I have an uncapper like yours but haven’t been using it because of the heat problem. I will try it again next year. I like the way you set your frames in edge in the uncapping tank. I will try that too. Thanks for the video!
Thanks, you too!
Very nice looking honey. The planer is fast and clean. I think it takes off to much of the comb compared to a knife and I agree the scratcher is for little stuff only unless you use it like Darren on "Jerome Bee Farm" .
Great thumbnail for your video.
Heck yeah. Good video!
Nice pull Glade. Efficient setup! Enjoyed the video!
👍
Man I enjoyed it. I like the way you were able to take care of many tasks at once. Efficiency on display. I’m sure you will get those mites under control. Look like strong colonies. Hopefully will do well and come out of spring ready to rock and roll!
It only happens when there are issues with the colony a strong healthy colony is able to deal with them
Wax moths are horrible!
Oh man I feel the pain.. I hate wax moths!
Who had the Extraction trailer there at the conference?
I believe that was Cowan Manufacturing.
@@utahbeeman ok… thanks!!!
