What was interesting and mysterious regarding the shadow realm a lot of fans thought it was more of a pocket dimension in between hell and earth. Like a purgatory / cemetery realm which we do see.

Not so much "localize" as it was "bodlerizeation." While some things like the "Shadow Realm" was iconic, bowdlerization is different from a proper localization as to bowdlerze something is to dumb down and change the content to make it safe for kids. Or to be more accurate, its to make it appear to parents that it's safe for kids. 4Kids practice of doing this during a period when the West was only just learning about Japanese media helped cement the common misconception that shones is a demographic aimed at children. In reality, the Shonen demographic is aimed at 16 and up, seinen is aimed at 18 and up, and anything below that, actual childrens programming, is called the kodomo demographic. Yu-Gi-Oh was never intended for the tween demographic 4Kids was targeting.

I believe the reason they had to change the way the cards looked was for legal reasons. It has to do with laws against how things are advertised to children, couldn’t let them look to much like the actual product.
