Ancient Japanese Literature Nerd Reacts to Ghost of Yotei Announce Trailer
Great Video, This is one of the Stories where the main character is at the same time incredibly lucky and very unlucky.
Couldn't have said it better myself.
I wonder what the Japanese version of the "Hapsburg Jaw" is? The place I live now is rather, "rural" and there are many coments about how the families were a little too close and that the invention of the bicycle improved genetic diversity in the area. How true it is I don't know, but I do know that it is the only place where the shops sell valentine's day cards with "To My Brother/Sister" on them.....
I wonder if this island has any historical reference and the author is roasting them, like “those people from there now, they’re from incest island” or the author just made it up. Also unrelated but is it true samurai would incense (not incest) their armour and clothes with a certain type of incense before going into battle? Thanks
@@Jim58223 Apparently, the island mentioned in the story does exist and is called Oki no Shima and is an island off the southern coast of Kochi Prefecture. The historicity of it being populated by one incestuous pairing, however, is likely sketchy at best. Though I'm no expert on this island's history so take everything I've said with a grain of salt. As far as the author roasting them that's certainly a possibility. I get the feeling that whoever wrote these down found the stories interesting but didn't think very highly of fellow aristocrats. Though, again. I could be wrong and missing some of the more subtle aspects of tone and word choice that someone from Heian Japan would easily pick up on. Again, grain of salt. As far as samurai using incense on their armor and clothes, I can't point to any specific instances of that in these stories or in any of my memories of the Tale of the Heike but I'm almost certain they did, especially if they were high ranking. If you read the Tale of Genji, nobles infusing their clothes with incense was a very serious matter and nobles would create new scents and guard them jealously. As the inheritors and perpetuaters of Heian aristocratic culture, I'm almost certain the samurai used incense for their clothes and armor.
@@TalesofDawnandDusk I believe in one of my books from a traditional sword school, possibly Katori Shinto Ryu that there is a recipe for a herbal mix for use on armour. It was passed down in the teachings as a way to keep the armour fresh and free from things like lice. Oh course my memory isn't as good as it was so I may be wrong about the school.
Fewer weeds and better yields.
@@gagamba9198 Is that why they transplant them? I see. The info is much appreciated.
Fascinating but weird
@Ren_Brands There are so many of these stories that fit that description lol
Another awesome tale until the end. 7:29 bruh
@@GreatestGames777 Yeah, it's definitely not a pleasant subject, but again, the text itself is very clear that this was a bad thing and ought not to be emulated so I guess it's fine lol.
@TalesofDawnandDusk I hope they never invent a device that somehow lets us see into the past. Japan would be the craziest show ever
@GreatestGames777 Yeah, some wild things happened back in the day, that's for sure.
Well, that's a whole new meaning of the phrase "brotherly love".
Imho, the ancient author had very perverted subconscious mind. Yeah, it's bad and don't do it, but then everybody lived happily ever after 🫠 Obviously, no apples nor snakes on the island.
Great Story, well presented. It's Interesting that the evil stepmother seems to be a trope in countries all over the World.
Thanks for the comment and the view. Yeah, it's always fun to see common ideas that pop up despite being on completely opposite sides of the world and with completely different cultures.
Great Video, as soon as the hothead husband was mentioned i knew where this Story was heading. . . . It did end not quite as gruesome as i expected, i feel like if this was a Story from my Homecountry the nobleman would have died aswell as probably the Husband.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. I was a bit surprised as well actually. But now I'm curious as to which country you hail from.

I thought Oku as in Oku-san, so once you said deep inside, you better believe my head was oku in the gutter XD. Damn, I found a treasure of a channel man! Thanks for the upload!
@@Gwansim-gx2st You know, it's actually the same Oku because the idea was that the wife stayed inside the house, which was especially true for aristocrats around this time because women weren't supposed to be seen by unrelated men so they stayed well inside the house walls. . . Make what you will of that information. And thanks for the view and comment too.

@@Enoch0parkour If I told you the Japanese version had super deep meaning beyond what is apparent and references ancient Japanese wisdom, you'd have to believe me.
So he's gay
No, but it's true bromance, which can be hard to distinguish lol.
I would love to see Ghost eventually go to the 1800s, particularly at the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate and the opening of Japan to the west. Maybe that could be the last Ghost, since the samurai class was officially gone during the Meiji period, and the original Ghost was in part created due to the hypocrisy of the samurai code. But that’s just a wishful thought.
Coyote Peterson would not survive getting bit by that centipede. Those dudes were tough, would not want to approach even a tiny centipede.
I think I remember watching ol' Coyote get bit by a fairly large centipede once, it was horrifying. I'm with you, there are few creatures in the world I find more disturbing than centipedes. They look like they crawled straight out of the depths of hades.
All centipedes are 100 feet long!

@@TalesofDawnandDusk I study a little bit every day so I don't get overwhelmed because I work full-time but over time hopefully I'll catch on to everything.
Not quite. Though that's a cool idea and I would have had a bit of a geek out at finding a potential inspiration for the lion turtle from Avatar. Unfortunately the actual kaiju stuff will come in the second part.
I thought the island itself would be the giant kaiju
Was that hotsama from shinobi?
@@connorhighland6783 If they add guest characters that would be so cool. Though your guess is as good as mine.
I would've translated it as (unless it completely strays away from the original): "Regretting of the scattering leaves, I come to pick them (the leaves) off (of the branch or the ground) to hang up/stick behind my ear. What do I have to be worried about?" All in all the meaning behind the poem could be something along the lines of "I have memories (the "scattering leaves") or fragments of past, nearly lost memories (possible meaning of why the writer uses the term "regret") that I want to never forget and keep/carry with me for a long time to feel at ease" which in my opinion makes sense in Kazuha's case as he had to flee from his home nation Inazuma and kept his friend's empty vision case as a souvenir/memento. (I've played genshin before and know a little bit about his background but I'm open to any corrections)
@emilyshen2436 A very astute observation. The connection to his friend who passed away didn't even occur to me and I wouldn't be surprised if that's one of the actual reasons why they chose this poem for Kazuha. Thank you for pointing that out.
I wonder if the end question is kind of like a, why am I worried about this? Like, its silly that I care so much about these leaves that I want to keep some.
It is indeed, but it's also not. Ambiguity that allows for multiple interpretations is a core aspect of Japanese poetry, so while sometimes the thought "it's open to interpretation" feels like a copout, for Japanese poetry it's almost always deliberate. So the answer to your question is, yes, it's very likely that that's one of the ideas that Inukai wanted to express, questioning why he cares so much about seemingly trivial, worldly things. The more I think about it that's such a good take I'm kicking myself for not realizing it and wish I had said all this in the video proper lol. Thanks for the comment.
This story resonates deeply with my own Viking ancestry: Never give up, never give in, never run away, no matter the odds against you, always FIGHT BACK! Love it. Keep up the great work, brother! Can't wait for more 🙏🙇♂⛩☸⚔🛡

Damn these villagers are dumb af. Lmao I wonder how the villagers explained to the guy to just strip and lie there to become food, “dw nothing suspicious is going on, just gonna leave these giant chopsticks and carving knife here”
@@Jim58223 You know, I wondered that too. Even if they hid everything how do you explain to the dude "you just lay here while we all run away and leave alone in the mountains?" Gotta love myth and folklore lol.
Everyone being surprised that the guy who at times glows, been preaching for Buddhism since he was a toddler, and has a holy kamehameha that comes from his third is somehow special is one on the "best" plot elements in literary history. 😆
Haha, yeah, you'd think they would have clued into that before he became one of the pillars of ancient Japanese government but that's standard myth and legend for you.
Spider, snake, bull, those are names on the long cloth of her hip. Those are her Hit list.

You gotta do a “how accurate” video on the move The Last Samurai 3. More reacts videos to upcoming Japanese video games/anime. Keep crushing brother!
Are man eating monkey gods common in Japanese stories? I wonder if there are more besides this and the previous story.
I was literally 2 minutes in before I was like wait a minute they're going to eat him And then he became a badass
@@GreatestGames777 Trust me, it gets even better in the next part
@TalesofDawnandDusk can't wait. Great underrated series
I think that rifle she's using is a Tanegashima, which I believe had already been circulating around Japan for some fifty or sixty years.
If I was held as some kind of captive in a strange village I would be trying my best to do my Patrick McGoohan impression, how about you?
I'm ashamed to admit that I don't know who Patrick McGoohan is. But as for what I would do, I would probably make plans to bounce. At least, that's what I'd like to say. I have to admit, if the people also provided me quality food, clothing, shelter and a beautiful, loving wife, I would find that hard to decline lol.
@TalesofDawnandDusk Oooh I am too old. He was an actor, most people now think of him as King Edward I in Braveheart. But he was in a spy series, at the end of which he quit. The next series, started with him being gassed and held in a strange village, (really Port Merrion in Wales designed by a strange architect and worth looking up) and told that he is No 6. They want information and he won't give it to them and tries to run away. The series, ("The Prisoner") ended in a total weird manner that people still wonder about today. If you Google, "The Prisoner" and "start" you should find the episode beginning with it's nifty car and groovy 60's theme tune!
@@tedrex8959 No, you're not too old. I'm just woefully uneducated when it comes to movies.

I don't know the specifics of light /blue/, but in olden times, dying something lightly - and getting the colors pretty much even - was WAY harder than dying it a uniform darker tone. So having light colored clothing in itself is kind of a flex.

These types of stories are my favourite. I imagined the monkey god to look like a giant Japanese macaque. The ending was very dragon ball-esque, let the bad guy go after beating him. Also commented on the previous video but RUclips seemed to remove it each time.
@@Jim58223 You know, I never made the Dragonball connection. Now that you point it out that's actually a recurring theme in these stories.
