This is a very insightful discussion where the author differentiates what is rea! discrimination vs what is emotionally abusive gas lighting i.e. if you don't agree that a little boy wears an Indian headdress to a Halloween party is appropriating Native American culture, you will be told you are a "rascist" but you are not aware of it. This is an emotionally abusive gas lighting manipulation to make you squirm and shut you down. When I read in an article by a Native American about the boy I said maybe the boy wore the headdress because he admired Native Americans and wanted to be like them when he grew up. That seemed to really upset people because of their need to protect their "victim" status, through which they can assert control over others. Sometimes, as Carolyn Myss has pointed out, the victim becomes the bully. The need of the victim to see only the negative in the behavior of white people is a give away that you are not dealing with someone who wants to have a discussion about racism, as they will allege, but who has a need to put you down unless you think, speak and act like they want. It reminds me of the Borg Collective on Star Trek: either you get assimilated into the Collective and think and speak only as the group wants or you get annihilated. This cult mentality, as the author suggests, is indeed destructive for society as a whole.
