Royal Enfield Himalayan 411 - It All Went Wrong - Just One Of Those Days - A Very Short Video
Hi there,
so this was supposed to be an epic video of me exploring a new ( to me ) Spanish village on foot.
Unfortunately, for reasons only known to my stupid self, I decided to set off at midday in temperatures of 32C with 75% humidity. Bearing in mind that I had no means of leaving my helmet and jacket securely with the bike, this was going to be a sweaty day.
I also didn't get any lunch and lost a video that I recorded on the way home.
So, all in all, just another typical EconomicalRides day then !
Well, I suppose I did just about manage to get a video out of it. Sort of. See what you think. It's a short one this time.
I will probably revisit the village when the weather is a bit cooler and...

Instructions for use : Attach the short length of rope to the burro at one end and the post at the other. Hang the wet washing over the burro's ears. Apply the mustard to the burro's back passage and quickly withdraw to a safe distance. Have a great weekend you two. Glad to hear that my photos arrived ok 👍🏻 Love from Spain, Garry & Ruby

I didn't put that in yesterday's message 😅. I don't think you are turning into Freddie Dobbs, as I can't imagine him washing off his dog in the Lavedero Publico. (No euphemism intended). Thanks for the EXTRA effort of commenting again you two ! As a reward you are getting an excessively long answer ! I almost did a complete re-run of this video this morning. It felt cool enough this morning, so I got my gear on, grabbed the cameras and set off. By the time 11 o'clock came around, I was soaked in sweat again ! I keep forgetting about the humidity. It might only be 28C but when the humidity is high, as soon as you stop, and I stopped a lot for this video, you start sweating instantly. Oh well, I survived it and I think I have Tuesday's video in the can and can edit it over the weekend 👍🏻 Lovely temperatures here now, 28C is perfect, just need the humidity to drop back down to normal levels. That village was about as busy as any village around here would be. A few cars flying about, a few people sat outside the bar in the square. But I was extremely surprised that nobody was making use of what looked like a beautiful municipal pool. The lifeguard was there and looking totally bored 😂 I did check on Google before I left, to see if the bar at the pool was supposed to be open and it was. I suspected, when it wasn't open, that the tenant was no longer there and that has indeed proven to be the case. When I look on Google now it says "temporarily closed" for all days of the week. I'll check again before I revisit Urrácal in a cooler month. It would be good to go full Freddie and actually get some lunch on one of my rides. Not something I normally do because I usually skip breakfast and lunch, so am not normally looking for food at the times when I'm out riding. But just for a change, I would give it a go, given the opportunity ! Take care you two, have a great weekend ! And thanks again for taking the time to post the comment again. Much appreciated Dave. @@economicalrides Thanks for the 'excessively long answer' Garry 🤗 Yes, it is always the humidity that spoils it for me too. I can stand any amount of dry heat but hot and humid is awful. The humidity here today is 100% and it has been raining non stop here since 9am. When I took Willers out this morning, she looked as though I had dunked her in a barrel of water, with a look of 'I hate you daddy', on her dripping face. Lots of cuddles in a dry towel and a couple of treats and she was ready for a snooze in her bed. Looking forward to next Tuesday's video. A shame about the bar being closed. I do like sitting at a bar, overlooking a pool, especially if there are other people there enjoying it. Let's hope it soon opens again. Yes Garry, go for the 'full Freddie' and have a nice lunch in a ridiculously expensive cafe and pretend that 20 Euros is very good value for a tiny coffee and a thin slice of dry cake. After watching your channel I knew full well what could happen with my new Classis. Yes, 10 miles on the clock I had the issue. Dealer has ordered me a new one. With the help of Warro's channel, I know how to replace it. Thanks again! And, thanks to Ruby!

    • @economicalrides
      @economicalrides День назад

      Blimey mate. 10 miles ?!?!? That is bad luck. Before replacing the speedo I strongly recommend that the dealer have a go at cleaning the connector in the headlight shell. It solved the problem for me and I never needed to replace the speedo in the end. There is a video of how to do it on my channel and Warro inspired me to give it a go myself. In my video you can actually see the speedo BEFORE where it's stuck and the first start AFTER I've cleaned the connector and it does a full calibration sweep and stayed like that until I traded it in. Never needed to do it again. I'm surprised that more dealers aren't cleaning the connector because that certainly seems to be where most of the problems with these speedos are coming from. Get it clean and dry with even conductivity over all of the pins and the speedos seem to behave themselves ! Any kind of condensation or oxidisation on any of the pins and the speedos seem to freak out. Might be worth suggesting to the dealer ? Anyway, terrible luck to have it happen so early and I really hope that it gets sorted soon. Thanks for letting me know and Ruby and I say "You're welcome !" 🐕 Cheers mate, good luck Garry & Ruby

      Thanks Janett. Glad you enjoyed it, although nothing went as planned 😂 Yesterday we again "only" had temperatures of 32C but accompanied by 85% humidity. Urgh. Pretty terrible for doing anything really ! Where you are is almost certainly similar or even worse. You might be used to it, but I am certainly not. It's very rare for us to have such humidity, since we are at 1000 metres altitude and the air here is normally quite dry. We've had this high humidity for over two weeks now, most unusual and I'm not enjoying it ! Still, winter is just around the corner, I'm sure. I now have my two cable locks, one for each bike, so when the weather cools, I will visit a few more villages and this time I will be able to leave my jacket and helmet on the bike and explore on foot and be more comfortable. It needs to get cooler first though. Don't fancy walking about in this heat ! 🥵 Thanks again Janett and cheers, Garry & Ruby

    Swap the throttle body for a hunter one seems to be the answer

    • @economicalrides
      @economicalrides 3 дня назад

      I'm not convinced that it's the answer. It does seem to give a bit more speed by somehow tricking the ECU but it doesn't stop the limiter from eventually cutting in. I think the throttle body gives you about another 7 kph or so and on bikes where RE accidentally deactivated the limiter altogether with a software update, the bikes were doing about 13 kph more ( so 135 kph rather than 122 kph ). I've heard a rumour that RE will be removing the limiter code on export 350s in the future but I have no idea whether that's true or not. But since I rarely exceed 100 kph anyway, another 13 kph at the top end is not important to me. Cheers thatwelshman, Garry

    • @economicalrides
      @economicalrides 3 дня назад

      Hi Andy. Actually being OCD I almost never leave my indicators on. That's why I got so annoyed when I saw the video. I think I was distracted by the stress of trying to negotiate an unknown village. The traffic control was a bit weird, it wasn't obvious how or where you were supposed to be driving. For instance, the climb up to the square was a one way system controlled by traffic lights at the top and bottom. It's incredibly easy to miss those lights and then you meet angry oncoming traffic ! But apart from leaving the indicator on, this time I managed to do everything right, so I'll be more confident next time I go there. Yes, I've been meaning to get a bicycle cable lock ever since I walked around Granada in full bike gear, carrying my helmet in 35C back in 2021. So it only took me just over three years to get around to it then ! I now have two. One for each bike. Should make exploring on foot a lot more enjoyable. I shall now buy some motorcycle boots that offer a fair amount of protection but are better for walking in and then we should be all set ! Cheers Andy ! Garry

    • @economicalrides
      @economicalrides 3 дня назад

      Hi Jamesworth. Ah yes "Ginnel". Great word. Thanks for reminding me that I am a Southerner 😂 Actually I think that I arrived around midday, so a good two hours before siesta time. I think at siesta time there almost certainly wouldn't have been that oncoming traffic. The road up to the square is actually a traffic light controlled one way system. I've encountered them in many similar villages. You have to have your wits about you, because the traffic lights are usually poorly placed, quite dim and very easy to miss. You can see the traffic lights at 04:15 and 05:44 on the RHS of the screen. It would be a good system if only the lights were easier to see. They could probably do with a set on EACH side of the road to be honest. They are tricky to spot, as they are. So don't your ginnels have traffic lights at each end James ? Being a Southerner, of course I wouldn't know 😇 Take care James. Keep spoiling Mrs A. Tell her that Ruby sends fluffy kisses ! Garry & Ruby

If you don't have hi tech indicators, get into a habit of cancelling before you have finished your manoeuvre (unless you are sat in the middle of the street) and develop a little OCD and keep cancelling them every few minutes. Could save your life.

    • @economicalrides
      @economicalrides 3 дня назад

      It was hot and worse still very humid Tim ! The humidity was the biggest problem. 85% ! The humidity was incredible. I was soaked through by the time I got home. Actually I almost never forget to cancel my indicator Tim, which is why I made a big thing out of it here. It annoyed me greatly to see it 😂 It was just the stress of dealing with a narrow road leading into who knew what in a village I’d never visited before. I was just totally focused on figuring out the correct navigation and rights of way, because these villages are all different and are all quite tricky to figure out. This one had a one way system on the road up to the square, for instance. You can just see the traffic light turn to green as I start the climb up. Those traffic lights are very easy to miss and when you do, all hell breaks loose ! You’ll probably have to wait another three and a half years before you see me leaving my indicator on again Tim 😇 It’s just not something that I do. I think it can only happen to me when I am in a stressful situation and distracted by other things 🤷‍♂️ Cheers Tim, thanks for watching 🙂 Garry & Ruby

If you look very closely, at the top and bottom there is a traffic light with a movement sensor which switches to green when you approach it, as long as there is nobody coming the other way. They have them a lot in these villages and they are INCREDIBLY easy to miss. Hi Stefan ! Thanks for watching the rest on demand. Much appreciated. At least you missed my internet issues at the end of the show, just as we were trying to wrap it up 😂 Yes, in Spain the government has no end of stupid ideas to keep themselves occupied and presumably to justify their salaries. The banning of open faced helmets is clearly going to be in conflict with the european open market legislation but the geniuses that came up with the rule never considered that. If I were a helmet manufacturer in Italy, manufacturing open faced helmets which comply with all EU specifications, Spain is effectively closing its market to me. How is that going to be permitted in a supposedly open European market ? So that's one of the reasons why the law isn't being enforced yet, because they are having to clarify that and various other issues. Currently the rule is being watered down. Now you are allowed to use an open faced helmet but only within the city. So once you leave the city, you are supposed to pull over, pull your full-faced helmet out from somewhere, take the open one off and put the full face one on. It's a total joke and making that law will prove to have been a total waste of time and taxpayer's money because I can't see the EU accepting it, for as long as such helmets are legal in the rest of Europe at least. In theory, if the law comes into effect, somebody visiting Spain from France on a motorbike, who prefers to wear an open face helmet, will have to bring a full face helmet along with them, just to wear whilst he/she is riding in Spain. Ridiculous ! I just can't see the EU ever allowing the ban to come into law, personally. Like I said, real geniuses at work here ! Sorry for the long rant but I do get annoyed with governments that waste money with stupid obsessions and then complain that they are broke and need to raise taxes or get more assistance from richer neighbours. Hi, well, unfortunately, not long after making this video, I had the urge to start riding some trails, so I ended up trading the Classic in for a Himalayan. But I've no doubt that it would still be looking brand new, if it was still here. My Meteor 350 is three years old and has 13000km on it and looks like new. Admittedly I don't ride in all weathers but if you look after them and keep them clean, there are no issues with the finish on any of these 350 REs. Apart from the speedo issue on some Classic 350s, they don't seem to have any major mechanical weaknesses either. Certainly no common ones. If the Classic appeals to you, I would wholeheartedly recommend it. I think that RE has also made a revision to the speedo to eliminate the famous "sticky speedo" issue. So there should hopefully be nothing more to worry about there. I hope this helps. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask 🙂 Cheers, ER.

As an older rider, I've done all that speed and heavy cruiser thing, but now I want to take my time touring on back roads. I'm torn between what 350 to get. I love the Classic, but I like the bigger fuel tank of the Meteor, but then again I like the retro look of the Classic. I absolutely adore the Meteor and I couldn't bear to part with it, even though the Classic was one year newer and I lost more money trading it in. The Meteor is absolutely fantastic for the kind of riding that you are looking to do. I'm like you, been fast on the roads, I even did track days, but at some point I decided that I ride bikes for relaxation and not stress. I decided to slow down. And the Meteor took me to my happy place. It's the best and most important bike I've ever owned because it showed me exactly why people enjoy motorcycling. It's a very special bike, the Meteor. It has made me smile after the first 50 metres every time I've taken it out, for three and a half years now. Nothing against the Classic but the Meteor has something that just puts you into such a relaxed mode and you just enjoy the ride. So you can guess my recommendation but we all have different tastes. Only slight downside of the Meteor is that the rear suspension is quite harsh, so not great on bad roads. But fitting a pair of Hunter 350 shocks is a quick job and improves matters a lot (apparently). I am still running the OEM shocks, just with preload added and like that they are okay for me. Happy to help ! Good luck deciding. ( Go for the Meteor 😉)

    Hi Garry and Ruby. I have enjoyed this little series of rides and have done a fair bit of riding lately on Ruby and The W650, using them both fairly equally, according to my mood. I have just had to put a new battery on Ruby, as she started to do strange things like resetting the clock, nearly every time I turned off the ignition. I thought at first that it might be just another fault with the speedo unit but then she struggled to start and finally refused to start, even though I always use a battery tender (Optimate). New battery fitted and all is now fine. She has done 6,000 miles (about 9,600 km) and both tyres are still well within wear limits and handling is good. Still on original chain and sprockets too. Mine was always on an Optimate too and managed just over three years. I've heard plenty of stories of the RE batteries only lasting a few weeks for some, so we shouldn't complain too much. Battery changing is so difficult on my older Honda I found it easier to remove the cables from the starter solenoid and leave them attached to the battery. I can then put them on the battery on the bench and reattach the cables to the solenoid. It helps if you can put the non-captive “captive“ nuts on the battery before trying to install it. Sometimes I use a small piece of zip tie to wedge the nut in place. I admit I often fail to do this until I’ve spent too much time trying to get the lead attached. Try replacing a battery on a 650 BMW. You haven’t hated a bike so much in your life…

    • @economicalrides
      @economicalrides 10 дней назад

      Thanks Alvin ! It clearly isn't just me who struggles to attach the battery leads with the new battery in the bike then ! I feel so much better now 😂😂😂 Swapping the battery out sounds like such a simple job, doesn't it ? But it very rarely is. Your suggestion might actually work on the Meteor too. I would imagine that at some point there will be a connector which I could just disconnect and then take that part of the loom, still attached to the old battery, over to the bench and swap it over to the new battery. I mean, there definitely isn't an intentional connector for battery swapping like there is on the Malaguti but there might be connectors going off to the various solenoids and gizmos which I could separate to make life easier. Definitely worth looking at before I swap batteries again 🤔, just a question of how far into the loom you'd have to delve before you managed to get both leads disconnected from the bike. Somewhere near the battery would have been nice ! I did spend at least an hour trying to get the positive lead reattached because the battery was at a slight downward and outward angle at the positive end, so the non-captive nut simply didn't want to stay where it needed to be. Of course the negative cable went on at the first attempt which gave me false hope that it was going to be easy after all 😂 After removing the tool roll holder, I was able to use a watchmakers screwdriver from above to try to stop the nut moving about TOO much. Like you, I tried to fit the leads without resorting to any clever tricks but was just about to give up and try to fix the nut in place somehow when the bugger suddenly lined up ! Typical ! Sometimes being lazy can bite you in the backside. It would have been better to wedge the nut in place from the start ( somehow ) but of course, we are always hopeful that we'll get away without doing it this time, aren't we ? 🤦🏻‍♂ Thanks Alvin, I feel much less useless now 👍🏻 Garry

    Lovely ride in sunshine and dry roads Garry. Are the CEAT tyres readily available to you in Spain? Re the Hunter rear suspension - why stop there-buy the rest of the bike 😂😂Thanks for that sunshine - very cheering 😊

      @economicalrides 10 дней назад

      Morning Peter ! I am assuming that the dealer can get hold of CEAT tyres through the Spanish RE distributor. They probably sling a few in every container of bikes they ship over. We'll see. I'll let them know next time I am over there and they can see what kind of tyres and chain and sprocket set they can find and what they will cost. I can't be bothered and if I buy the stuff, especially the tyres, I'd have to do an extra trip over in the car just to drop.them off. Can't see that happening unless I adopt the LE release schedule and stop doing live shows 😂 Just been out running an errand on Norman and because it is so late, it was stinking hot. I need another shower and the inside of my helmet is like a wet sponge ! Cheers Peter. Have a fun day. As for the Hunter, I did actually dream of having bought one last night. But I think that if I am going to spend a chunk of money on a new bike, it will have to be something very different to the two that I have, unfortunately. 🤔 Love from Spain, Garry & Ruby

    As I'm watching you ride in sunshine, it's misty and looks like tomorrow's 70mile ride for the BSA Health check will also be misty and damp, so I'm consoling myself with a bowl of Ice Cream. Hi Andy. Well I was out on Monday at around midday and it was only 32 degrees but very humid (55%). A nice cool misty ride sounds quite appealing to me ! On Monday I had drops of sweat dripping down before my eyes inside the helmet, just a constant drip, drip, drip. If I went over a bump, I got about six drips all at once. I think it took two days for the inside of my helmet to become even remotely dry again ! You need snazzy graphics if you want to inform people about an impending live show, or so I have been told 😝 Cheers Andy, I hope you get to enjoy today's ride and that the BSA performs well ! Better for my back 😝 Haven't heard of that whisky Mike but sounds good. If I drink whisky on Thursday it will probably only be the cheap stuff because the two hot chips will probably have done for my taste buds anyway, so no point in drinking the good stuff 😂 Thanks Mike. hi Gary and Ruby ,another nice ride with no traffic . it seems rare now to go out without seeing a display of bad driving . also they are putting down the road dressing ,chippings and so needing to avoid that . best to you both . Hi John and Linda, yes, I don't think I'd enjoy riding or driving in the UK these days. The odd time I have to drive in Germany is bad enough and I know that the UK is even worse ! I was out early to film this ride, so that probably helped with the lack of traffic. Although I doubt that this road sees a lot of traffic even at peak times. Thanks and take care the two of you. wonderful finish to the road, i need to get both my bikes into the dealership, but i will do one in Oct 24 and do April 25 for the other, as its when inspection is due and hope to get a loaner bike, as i need to ride 30 miles to them as i do not use my local dealer as the suck! as for this Thursday, its on my calendar and i think if its 9 pm your time then that is 3 pm my time. so i need to get some beer in the fridge by then. as for the chip, enjoy, it just makes me want Indian food! if its spicy, i want it to be a meal! not a chip.

    • @economicalrides
      @economicalrides 10 дней назад

      Hi Blake ! I think this is the first time that I've had a new bike beyond the end of its warranty period, so it's the first time that I am facing the prospect of having to give a relatively new, so far totally reliable bike, a little refresh. Of course I could just not do it, but once you start doing that, you probably won't stop and that's when unreliability begins to creep in. I'll spend a few quid on Buddy in the winter, just to get him set for another three years of, hopefully reliable, fun 👍🏻 3pm your time sounds about right Blake. I'm quite looking forward to the hot chips, I think that I might be getting used to them now 😂 I do have some really spicy Indian curries in the freezer which I eat as a special treat and very rarely. For Thursday I will have to make do with two hot chips for dinner though, don't want the following day to be TOO painful 😂 Take care Blakester and I look forward to seeing you in the live chat on Thursday 👍🏻 Garry & Ruby

      Hi Bob. That's good going ! I reckon that I could get 20K out of the tyres too if I decided to push it. But if I change them towards the end of the year, they will have probably done 15k, so I can live with that. I just think that after three and a half years of reliable service, Buddy deserves a bit of a refresh. Glad you enjoyed the three parter Bob as I quite enjoyed making them. It's much easier for me to talk AFTER the ride than during. Usually when out riding I forget about 70% of what I was intending to say ! Hi Garry yep same for the classic new tyres ( Michelin classics ) 🤞 new yuasa battery, chain n sprockets, my tyres still have plenty of meat 8k km up but they feel a bit loose now in the bends . And oil & filter, Steve’s changing to HNTR rear shocks was good and definitely look better at soaking up the bumps, possibly may try them on the classic, The mouse death toll is climbing were saving 3 for every 10 the 3 of them bring in they are prolific hunters, Chills says high to Ruby, looking forward to Thursday Steve is going to be a mess lol😊 Thems in France 🇫🇷

Control technique here is in its infancy, when I took my Vespa in, the tech didn’t realise the motor, was on the side of the scooter and was gobsmacked it carried a spare wheel where he thought the motor should be. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 and then he was having great difficulty getting a metre long emissions rod up the 4” long out let for the exhaust 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 gave up and passed it, bless him.. 🇫🇷

      @@PeterHolland-mu7yn Worth considering Pete. In my experience the first MOT is very thorough because they check the bike against the factory spec before "putting it into their system". Might be worth waiting with any visually obvious mods. I'll be taking the panniers off too, just in case. They used to have a similar problem testing the emissions on my Bullet. He'd put the probe in the exhaust and then by the time he had got to his test computer it had vibrated out and was lying on the floor. He repeated the pantomime three times before giving up and waving me onto the next station 😂 Cheers you lot, us two.

      I don't think that the 450 will attain the legendary status of the 411, that's for sure. The 411 made itself legendary by being simple, utilitarian and economical. The 450 is a totally different animal. It may not be as fast but I still prefer my 411 over the 450 and saw no reason to buy the new "Himalayan". The 411 is probably the best all-round motorcycle I have owned and I think it is going to be almost impossible to replace, when the time comes. Cheers Todd. We are in agreement on this ! Garry 👍🏻
