The thought occurred to me that Hope Sandoval is kind of like the vocalist version of Jeff Beck. Her pitch is all over the place which would ruin most female vocalists, but she makes it sound sultry, mysterious, and wonderful. Both have been true to themselves and did their music exactly the way they wanted without bowing to the crazy music business. As for how he played or how she sings, the word is uncopyable. I cringe at covers of songs she sang, as really no one can sing like her. And as commented she still looks great even after a lot of years went by. Add to that this is one of Mazzy Star's best songs.
