Cleaning Up After Hurricane Beryl, July 2024

We found ourselves in the eye of Hurricane Beryl early on the morning of July 8th. Like many in the Houston area, we are cleaning up from flooding, property damage, downed trees, and loss of power. Thankfully, everyone at the ranch is unhurt and healthy (including the four-legged residents)!

I’ve never seen a whipple tree set up that way before
This cart is a reproduction Whitechapel-style cart, and the swingletree is typical for this style of vehicle.
Aren't the reins too short? I don't know a lot about horse driving (I'm just collecting infos bedore having a try - your channel s really helpful), but the head carriage looks tense.
The reins are perfect for the size of the pony. The head carriage is fairly typical for this breed, an American Shetland Pony. Thanks for watching and we are so glad that the channel has been helpful. If you have any other questions, please reach out and we'll try to answer them for you!

I am so glad to see you demonstrating this! As you pointed out the vast majority of foreign hand drivers does not have any idea how to fur and unfurl the foreign hand lash. They keep it wound around the stick and it is completely useless. I know that it is not too difficult to learn how to do this, because I have learned myself, and I am not a foreign hand driverjust takes a little bit of practice

Good video. When I started driving I made a rein board. Good for practice
A bit more fussy than I care for just driving a pair, but I use a similar technique driving a 4 in hand, using my left to hold the reins and the right as support and to reach forward to grab a leader line as needed, no whip as I drive workhorses. 4 Percherons can put a strain on the forearm if they are feeling good and fresh and the lines themselves weigh 20 pounds. Farming and logging calls for compromises I guess, get it done while you stagger along in the snow/ice/mud.
