THE PINNACLE RIDGE (GRADE II) - OGWEN VALLEY, WALES UK, 4K

Pinnacle Ridge is a brief but airy scramble on one of the rocky ribs lower down on Pen yr Ole Wen’s south-westerly slope. @@Ant-66 Very short scramble with a bit of air… but what a view from up there ☝️. Thank you 🙏 for your comment
How does it compare to Crib goch? Is it much harder?
Apologies for late response mate. Well - there is no yes / no answer (you already know i am sure). They're completely different, in my humble opinion - they're both very easy BUT most of the routes on Ben Nevis will always feel more adventurous "mountain type" (gaining height, a bit of a climbing combined with scrambling, route navigation, the approach to certain rock features, etc). Crib Goch is brilliant but once you get to the Ridge from Pen-y-Pass it is all straight line "flat" walking (a bit exposed from the right but flat). Yes - you need to look ahead and not to trip over but not much of a scrambling, right? The only features requiring little bit of scrambling are the pinnacles (believe me you can do it with no hands, same way most of the ridge). On top of that if you keep to the left side of the ridge - this "thrilling" exposure that was visible on your right (usually play games with your brain and balance i guess) suddenly disappears. I like them both - Ledge Route and C.G - as they're not 15 min scrambles ... but i have to admit i will always be happier with The Ben choices (different atmosphere for sure). Don't get me wrong - if the weather gets really bad (quick / sudden change), even though i will still find The Ben more challenging location - them two routes will become a trap and correct navigation will be a KEY to retreat with no consequences, especially in winter. Take into consideration i did this 3 times (winter / summer) and still missed 1 obvious feature which easily added 1 hour to the time frame planned. Hope it helps
Thank you for alerting me to another place I must avoid like rabies.
@@MrHistorian123 Each creator expresses himself different way, this is a fantastic experience and a very short route. I am sure if you watch other channels, you will re-consider. At least try…🤛👍
@@noexpirydate5208 When you get vertigo on a thick carpet, as I do, I prefer to admire other people dicing with death. I did some scrambling in my 20s/30s, but decided I'd rather live to see my son grow up. I got part way across the Aonach Eagach and gave up and went back, then quit scrambling.
Great video. I dont think i could go all the way on that ridge. Can in ask what boots do you use? You obviosly have 100% trust in the grip of your boots. Thanks
@@nevans8416 hello mate, apologies for late response. I’d say it’s a little bit of everything, not just super duper boots 🥾 (even though incredibly important). I guess years spent in the mountains help massively with your confidence (walking, scrambling, climbing- both winter and summer) is an advantage. I use old Raichle GTX boots and I am sue you can tell they look 100 years old but nothing is wrong with them, hence keep using them. By the way, Crib Goch is not difficult, you should try, cross country runners do it in trainers. Feels a little bit airy in some places but you can avoid many of them by keeping to the left side. You should try 👍
Spectacular location, subscribed 🙂
@@mooskamoo appreciate mate
That certainly got my palms sweating 😂 Not a big fan of death defying ridge walks but that was fun, some pretty dodgy sections just when you think you’re coming to the end. I’ve seen a few vids of Crib Goch, this was the best purely based on the fact you used a camera with a good focal length, all the others used crazy wide angle lenses to ‘fit it all in’ but doesn’t give you a real sense of being up there like this does, well done.
@@mooskamoo such positive “editing related comment” means a lot, thank you mate, appreciate it. Where possible I hold the camera, or use chest mount ( closer to my face therefore voice recording is still acceptable). If it comes to more challenging scrambling or climbing it is either helmet or chest. Check out the newest video, I find it more thrilling than crib goch
Just sat down with a late night feast and a brew then this came up. Perfect.
Could you reverse that route ? Looks like it would be a tricky descent. Great vid, I have been over Pen Yr Ole Wen but wasn't aware of this ridge, thank you !!
@@autoscanremaps Thank you mate. Well - yes i would be able to but before such attempt i would probably do it two more times (both sides of the last pinnacle) just to see how it feels (sequence of the moves). Watch them two channels - Clog on the mountains and The Bald Scrambler ... this route has a few options as far as i know. Descent would be slightly tricky (agree)
That is quite frightening, fair play to you guys, felt like I was preying you guys would make it the whole way, especially when you's had to backtrack. You definitely showed the nature of Ben Nevis though away from the normal tourist route.
@@scottcjmckelviephotography hello mate, thanks 🙏 for your comment, this is one of the easiest ICONS on Ben. Ledge Route happens to be a “retreat “ line for many climbers to get back to CIC, so it should give you a clue of the grade. Yes, I fully agree that simple scrambling (grade 1-2) may be very dangerous and risky sometimes or tricky cos of the route finding but if the weather is good and you do have some scrambling experience you should be fine, enjoying stunning scenery. It was a mistake to do it in such misty and wet 💦 conditions but i did it at least 3 times (summer and winter) so i knew certain places and route features on the way, therefore still enjoyed it.
Music always ruins videos 👎
@@PSYCHIC_PSYCHO Someone made “similar “comment in my other video but unfortunately it is pretty difficult to find a balance between those who enjoy wind and heavy breathing (camera pointing out rocks for 14 min) and the rest of the viewers who expect a “story telling” movie 🍿 being more than just informative scrambling guide . Raw footage is nice of course but not sure if for the whole 14 min. Thanks anyway.
turn the volume down then you silly sausage.
@@noexpirydate5208I hate RnB. I like climbing. I came here for climbing, not whatever this music is
As you noted in a comment , you went wrong . At the top of the ramp you go round left but very quickly go left again and then up an easier section into a flatter grassy area (where the alternative start missing the ramp comes in) . Then it is right and fairly easily up to the large block at the start of the ridge proper. I think you went too far along the path after turning left at the top of the ramp, then had some difficult exposed scrambling to get up to the start of the ridge. Good effort in such wet Misty conditions!
@@billthomson7468 I appreciate your comment mate. Even though i’ve done it 3 times, when Scottish weather makes your climb more challenging, it is pretty easy to make a mistake. It is very common issue on the Ben- route finding.
As soon as I hear that music, I'm gone
Sorry to hear that mate, difficult to make all happy. I always try to find balance. I always think- if you’re not a climber or scramble addict- camera pointing out rocks for 10 min (or sound of breathing) is just boring to “some” viewers.
Good effort, it ain’t easy when the mist is down, keep a cool head and press on.

I fully agree with you mate, the scenery here is just amazing, the scramble itself even though not very difficult it is nicely exposed in places and I can only imagine what it looks like in winter. Need to try it in Dec/Jan. Enjoyed it a lot.

@@02mtb 😊😛🤪 … fun but stressful. How many times u can repeat same feature and still not clear it?
@@noexpirydate5208 probably until I move to the next trail 😁 MTB: always pain and pleasure
Its what you make of it. You dont have to pick the very easiest way up the clough like you did, you can take the more challenging lines. I enjoy it everytime I go up there. Yes it may not be hard but its still fun and you can certainly enjoy some scrambling if you follow the river bed
@@jameslincoln1 Thanks for your comment James, i do agree with you mate (partially). It is clearly visible i am following river bed and the only reason i am using hands (few places only) is because of wet and slimy slabs. The only two places that “may” require hands is waterfall area (not the way i chose) and the chimney (rated grade 2). Come on James , i am sure u know where i am coming from. I know plenty of hill walkers will enjoy this trail but when i ve read description about it i was expecting 1-2 graded scrambling. This route has nothing to do with scrambling (apart from 1 place, ok - possibly 2). How can u compare it to other trails rated same grade 2 such as Pinnacle Ridge (just an example mate)? What about Crib Goch grade 1 or The Knife Edge on Blencathra, grade 1. Crowden Clough is a walk across the park mate and even though beautiful scenery is should not be misled for a scrambling trail. This is my humble opinion only because my expectations were much higher due to obvious route description.
@noexpirydate5208 I understand your point, seen as the peak has no mountains, unfortunately there is nothing that compares to the Welsh routes. However Crowden is the mildest of them all. Saying that I take visiting freinds up there for the first taste of scrambling, especially if they are scared of heights and exposure. And when I do I make it interesting for myself, but to do that you have to get wet and go direct up pretty much all the water. Particularly at the short section. Loads more fun if you go direct up the waterfall. These routes are also more fun/challenging in worse conditions. Try wild boar clough the day after heavy rain. Completely different prospect to doing it bone dry. But unfortunately if your after exposure it just isn't there to be had on scrambling routes in the peak

Thinking of walking this route in august, hoping for sunshine. How many hours did this walk take?
@@juliel7522 Hi Julie, apologies for late response, i was away the whole weekend . As u know from my video we got lost, so this particular attempt wasn’t the quickest. On top of that- it was incredibly wet and foggy. Not the easiest to find your way. Having said that if you have a nice weather- I’d say 2 ( maybe 2.5) hours to the top? I never rush during climbing, stop for a photo or drink. Bear in mind there is fair walk to the summit from the end of the route. Also consider 20-30 min from CIC to actually get to the 1st pitch. Hope it helps. If you decide to try this in winter, you will love it.
@noexpirydate5208 thank you for your response. I actually plan to take this route on the 2nd August. I was weighing whether to do this or the cmd arete, I don't really have much of a head for heights tbh, i seem to get vertigo ish in narrow steep exposed areas, had scrambling practice on scafell pike in a long and windy rain storm so I think I might be ok. Would you recommend this one over the cmd arete route?
@@juliel7522 … without a doubt Julie. Don’t get me wrong, CMD is still worth doing but if was to make a decision what’s better- straight away Ledge Route. CMD is obvious ridge, Ledge can be tricky if you don’t know where you go or don’t know full route description with some images saved in ur phone. At least certain stops (turns u need to take)
@noexpirydate5208 thank you for the advice, I did feel very dizzy actually looking at cmd's long exposed ridge leading to ben nevis, can't imagine walking the length of that for hours though it looks very straightforward route wise. Maybe if I could stomach it could make the descent via the cmd route but if not is the pony/mountain track nice to do on the way down?
@@juliel7522 CMD is not very exposed. Of course you need to remember - at the end of the day it is a RIDGE so a bit more exposed. Still - very far from Crib Goch route, Elbow Ridge or Matterhorn Ridge (or even Bristle / Tryfan TNF). In my humble opinion - it is less interesting (no matter fantastic scenery) than Ledge route. Also i'd suggest you start VERY early if you want to climb LR and come down CMD, it will be a long walk - having in mind you've left the car at North Face Car Park. I would not treat LR as my retreat line to get back, it is too nice so prefer to climb up this way. Again - personal view. Good luck Julie
Only a complete idiot would go to the Peak District, and then complain they couldn't find any scrambling that was similar to Tryfan, Crib Goch and Bristly Ridge Ect. Ect. Stanage edge is a great place for a long walk with a mild challenge or two, or to practice rope skills. You looked disappointed 😂 The music reminds me of the PC game Unreal 1. Good times 😎
Ha ha ha you know me well (i was very disappointed mate). I was hoping for continuous scrambling (1-2) from the beginning (pretty much) - similar to Tryfan, Crib Goch, Striding Edge, etc. I love being outdoors and happy to "tick another box" but this was boring as hell (this was a dog walk route). Stanage wall you refer to (different climbing spots) is a fantastic training facility to practice rope work, climbing skills, etc ( i ve been there before) so from climbing perspective - nothing to regret. Having said that - no more Crowden Clough for me. Thanks for the comment.
@@noexpirydate5208 The trouble is the hills/cloughs in the Peak are just not high enough to give more than a few metres scrambling. Having said that, I will probably do this one this weekend. Every time I've been up before I've gone up the steep left side path just for alpine training so gaining as much height as I can in 1 day carrying a pack. I usually do a double loop i.e. up & down Kinder twice, there are quite a few choices.
@@duncanbeard9460 hello mate, fully agree. Even though I knew few climbing spots in Peaks from my previous visits I was wondering what grade 2 or 1 looks like over there- knowing there are just hills in the area. Excluding climbing walls along 5 km Stanage Wall … I was expecting continuous scrambling features on this trail (more, less) according to its grade. Clearly this is not possible over there. Anyway, no matter if this trail met expectations or not I still enjoyed being out , doing something new and ticking another box. Lesson learnt.
The gully at the start looks like dexter gully . Sinister gully to the left is a more solid option for anyone wanting to try this route who doesnt like loose rock.
I think you are right, i've heard both of these names - Dexter and Sinister before we started. Group of friends i was following that day - was also considering Sinister route. @noexpirydate5208 Thanks for your comments. My energetic hiking/climbing days are over as you will have ascertained by my comments. A month after that Crib Goch hike, I hiked down the North Rim of Grand Canyon, camped, and out the next day. That was knackering. Utube is my saviour now.
