A jam survival kit for the beginning dulcimer player. These videos use a very basic version of tunes that are regularly played in dulcimer sessions and then demonstrate how to add interest and variety in your playing. Quarter-note versions of these tunes are available for purchase/download. Laurie is joined by her friend Jean Cunningham for these No Frills segments as part of the Send in the Music Virtual Jam every Saturday.
Shalom Chaverim
Laurie and Jean are joined by their friend Shirell to play Shalom Chaverim. After introducing the tune with tips for success, the trip play the tune as a three part round. BONUS!! Listen to Sherill on the bamboo flute as she joins Laurie for a bit of improv on the melody.

I had forgotten this round! I've done arrangements of Hey, Ho, Nobody Home (even one for Christmas) But this has a lovely folk lyric that I remember I really loved singing as a young woman.
Heigh Ho, Peace Round, Rose Rose...all similar, yet different! What is the one for Christmas? I always like to know more rounds!!

This is beautiful! I have been wondering if I have been "cheating" by anchoring my pinky and ring finger of my strumming/picking hand - because it feels natural to me, but I haven't seen anyone else do it. And today you advised me to do exactly what I have been doing!
It really helps me to anchor pinky and ring fingers to the side of the fretboard. It gives me something to push against and a home base. Glad that advice helped you!!

Thanks for all your suggestions! I am still in my first few weeks of playing dulcimer. I do a lot of sliding with this song. On the chorus, I slide UP to the second fret on the D string (hen) and down to the second fret on the A string (hen). I think I'll try some vibrato now!

I thought there was only an A part. I like the B part though. Idk if this is true but it kinda seems like the B part could be played over the A as a harmony, so in a jam they might just be playing the A part while someone sings over the two A parts then plays B as a harmony.
Hmmm...that's an idea! I'm going to give it a try. As to the B part, you can probably hear it differently anywhere the tune is played. This melody got stuck in my head a a jam once and so it stays!
