Hello Samantha! Can I ask a question regarding this vid? Is there any references you're using when making this Dioptra? Somehow I still don't get how you get the measurement and the calculating part; especially how to use the dioptra itself step by step. Thank you in advance! (Btw I'm writing a story about a surveyor, so yeah right now I'm still looking for some references to make it more realistic)
Hello Nathania! Here are the references we used to create the Dioptra. I highly recommend Lewis' work as it seems to be the best source for explaining the dioptra, its application, and how it was constructed. I hope this information was helpful! Lewis, M. J. T. Surveying Instruments of Greece and Rome. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2001. doi:10.1017/CBO9780511483035. Suggestions for the overall dimensions of the dioptra were taken from this source. Most dimensions were extrapolated from the scale of the diameter, which was extracted from the text. Chapter 2 Images and information about the construction of the sightings were taken from this source. This was instrumental in how we created our sightings and how they were used. Chapter 3 All information about the history behind Hero’s Dioptra as well as Julius Africanus’ military application came from this source. This particular chapter also had many of the photos that we used, which helped in construction and application, as well as creating visuals within the video. Lewis, Michael. "Greek and Roman Surveying and Surveying Instruments." Ancient Perspectives: 129-61. doi:10.7208/chicago/9780226789408.003.0006. The background and principles from this source helped us construct our dioptra since the mapping use and history helped to visualize how to create the plans for the shapes of parts for the laser cutter and 3D printer.
Name of soundtrack?
