Modern American comics are declining because the writing is awful! Half the writers are politically active zealots who are trashing the brands. Couple that with comic companies cheating out artists by paying them awful fees that drive them elsewhere.

When I went to the comic book shop and magazine shops, Eclipse comics, Dark horse Comics, Viz had manga in comic book format along with Marvel, DC, Image, Valiant, etc. before Tankobons/graphic novels were fully available but because online BBS featured many manga fans providing English translations (as they did with anime at the time via fan subs), there was always a Japanese bookstore such as Kinokuniya in metropolitan areas and Tower Records also sold Japanese anime and manga magazines.. Back when Wizard Comics started, at comic shops there was Animerica Mangazine, Manga Vizion that were not separated from comic books. I think it really depends on where you live and how comic book owners were brought up. I didn't grow up in a big city, but our local magazine and comic book shop sold the manga no differently than comic books. As for manga were black and white, I believe this is where Ben Dunn created Antarctic Press in 1984 and would create Amerimanga titles which had color such as "Ninja High School" and "Warrior Nun Areala". But do I call manga comics, I personally classify them as the same, but I don't call manga "comics". Even if Marvel had that stint where a lot of their artists started making their characters in anime format, I don't call those manga. I call Korean comic books, Manhwa and Filipino comics as Komiks. But I don't separate them either. My manga are in comic book boxes like my comics are in comic book boxes. But I suppose people can say the same about anime and cartoons. I would never call "Dragon Ball Z", "Naruto", "Bleach" a cartoon. But because OG "Transformers" and "GI Joe" were animated in Japan by Sunbow, would you call it a cartoon or anime? The old "The Hobbit" and "Thundercats" S1 was animated by Topcraft (which would become Studio Ghibli) Hmm... But then you start blurring the lines especially when people then throw in the "is Panda Express, Chinese food?". But manga/anime has evolved overtime. Because it's big business, it's not as Japan exclusive as it once was. Companies know that these works are now international consumption especially with same day releases.

I read some early manga like Mai, Ranma and Robotech in the 80s, and it never really hit me, so I never followed up after that. But you know what else is comics? KOMIKS. The Filipino art form which has been around since the 40s and spawned such legends as Darna and Lastikman, then inspiring several generations of Pinoy artists to work for the Big Two and various indies (as some do to this day, including Image co-founder Whilce Portacio). I'd love to see a video about Komiks done by a Western RUclipsr, but I'm not sure it's ever actually happened yet, not even by the likes of Kayfabe or Tropes, and also including the TV shows it has spawned in the Philippines.

Manga and western Comics are two forms of comics that have evolved culturally in very different ways. That impacts not only the stories you most often see but even how people consume them and even how they're written. As someone who really likes both comics and manga there are so many distinctions that make both unique and super cool.

i think a bigger reason is that manga has alot of direct adaptations that give casual readers an opening to read them. sure comics have movies and shows but they're not a 1 to 1 it's just setting and characters. i'm reading Invincible and it's really cool to be able to see the slight differences the show makes, same with Deadly Class. I don't think all adaptations should be like that, it just makes it easier for a none reader to get into reading.

You're argument is presented as "manga isn't comics" but if I'm understanding right, it seems like what you're main point is that there isn't a proper term to distinguish DC/Marvel from the medium itself. I'm from the UK, before the superhero movie boom the idea of a comic in my head meant the comedy strip style ones. So now (at least the region I live in) we use the term "Beano" to refer to that type. It isn't technically correct because The Beano was a specific brand. But there isn't really anything else you can call them. It's a strange phenomenon. I can't tell if you're just exaggerating for the camera or not, but if you feel genuinely disstressed I would recommend getting into etymology and language evolution. Might give you a better perspective.

Interesting piece! Some thoughts, but don't worry, no pitchforks. Thought #1: it's not a competition. Just because manga sales are on the way up and comic sales are on the way down doesn't mean that one art form is 'winning.' No art form is better than another, some are just more commercially viable. If commercial viability was quality, The Bachelor would be winning Emmys. I was a jazz musician in college. We worked really hard to make music nearly no one cares about, while three-piece rock bands playing Doors covers were getting paying gigs every weekend, and we were ok with our lives. Thought #2: If it WERE a competition, comics would be losing, and rightly so! The comics model is designed to keep collectors who are already invested spending as many dollars as possible, whereas the manga model is designed to get the stories into the hands of as many potential readers as possible. If two industries are vying for my dollars, and one is offering me variant covers and making me chase chapters, but the other is serving the story up to me in an easy-to-market, easy-to-find, affordable package, it's EASY to see which one prioritizes story over 'culture.' Thought #3: One distinction you didn't really go into was this: 'comics' place great cultural emphasis on legacy characters, whereas 'manga' often don't. It bears discussion, whether this is an advantage for one or the other, but it's CERTAINLY interesting. Me, I don't need any more Batman. I just don't, and that's ok! Meanwhile, I value originality, whereas there are some western comics fans who actually ACTIVELY dislike it. Change one thing about a character, and there's a chorus of 'just come up with a new character.' Come up with a new character that's similar to the old one, and there's a chorus of 'he's too much like ...'. Put in a TOTALLY original character? Nah, not gonna sell. Western comics fans, a lot of them, anyway, seem comforted by the familiar. Which is fine, but it DOES get boring. I read comics, manga, AND contemporary graphic novels with a frenzied passion. I'm also a creator. And I think the 'culture', the stuff that makes comics 'comics', isn't sustainable.

People keep talking about the industry dying but until it happens it’s literally up in the air. I don’t read floppy’s anymore and don’t tend to ever read em again because I prefer books and plus modern stuff is really more of miss than hit type of thing now so I’ll gladly do manga over the new stuff.

I don’t think the industry or the medium is dying at all. In fact, quite the opposite. However, the American floppy is definitely going through some changes.

Interesting food for thought! So the comic book industry (major publishers) is market driven... then are "we" fighting a losing battle for the comic book in the classic sense that manga is "pulling" (popular) dollars from the classic comic book industry causing its decline ? I would argue that the comic book/graphic novel is an American created art form. Along with the Blues and Rock'n Roll the three art forms that the United States has blessed the world with. (I believe France can claim the first printed collection of static cartoon boxes - I am talking about sequential art to tell a story.) Are we seeing another cycle where the major publishers are forced by virtue of the dollar to return to quality written artistically rendered comic books? I am old enough to remember the investing craze and crap of the 90's with card stock die cut covers with Marvel declaring bankruptcy and the wonderful quality correction of the 2000's that inspired the current cinematic interpretations of the likes of Guardians of the Galaxy, Daredevil, etc...

Great video and insight into the new Ultimate Universe! It really does feel like it is trying to address the critical issues in the main 616 universe.

I dislike AI, but all of the propositions listed here are pipe dreams. In the entertainment industry profits are king. If AI comics, movies, songs and books are going to be profitable the are inevitably going to be made. If some artist will find a way to increase his productivity with AI they will do so. Now, do I personally want to consume this AI content? No, because art never was and never will be about pretty pictures or printer-like efficiency. And that’s what tech bros fail to understand. As for the general public’s reception, I guess we’ll see.

You know where I'd like to use AI? In "How to break the Algorithm?", "How to invest my money and have a huge return so I can create my Art for free?", or "How to create step by step a killer advertising campaign to reach my audience and make them happy, which makes me happy?" I don't want AI to do my Art for me. I want AI to do all the other stuff to help me keep creating art. And if I gain financial freedom, that would be much better! I'd do Art for free if I had money to pay for the bills. I'm a comic book artist who loves to create my own stories. I'd do it for free if the so-called AI, supposedly smarter than a smart person, actually was what it claims to be. I totally agree with your points. But I'd be more merciful with the average Joe making their AI for fun than with a company committing Art theft. Companies that use AI to steal data, spread misinformation, or harm individuals should face consequences, including closure. But the average Joe creating their nude weeabos? Nah, let those people have their happiness XD TO MY COMRADES ARTISTS ONLY: Geez, man. AI-generated images have a ton of anatomy issues, wrong lighting, bad composition, and a super weird color scheme. Are you sure you want to be inspired by that mess?
