Overlay Custom Time Periods in a Tableau Line Graph
Comparing one time period to another is a common use case in Tableau. In our experience, one of the best ways to do that is to overlay one on top of the other. The question is, how do you do that dynamically for both a current and comparison period?

Thanks for sharing! Is it possible to add a total row in the new Table Vix Extension?
Hey! We haven't yet found a way to add Totals just yet. It seems that others have worked around this by simply using another extension... Hopefully Tableau adds this soon!
This didn't quite work for me. I moved the ATTR Date to detail so it would show up in the tool tip. When I look at the tool tip, it shows an * next to the label instead of the date for both Selected and Comparison periods. Any thoughts on how to fix that?
Thanks for checking this video out! Can you switch the aggregation from ATTR to MAX and see if that helps? Here's a quick breakdown on why you're getting an asterisk: onenumber.biz/blog-1/2018/2/28/why-am-i-getting-a-in-tableau#:~:text=What's%20going%20on%3F,it%20will%20return%20an%20asterisk.

The sorting functionality disappears upon using the index. I hope there's an alternative to this approach.
Might be worth setting a up a parameter driven sort in that case: onenumber.biz/blog-1/2020/4/8/giving-your-user-multiple-sorting-options-with-tableau-parameters

Hey Eric, This was super helpful and really appreciate your very clear and thorough approach of walking us through these - love your videos. One question for you - this is all working great for me EXCEPT when I try to do a YTD growth comparison. So for instance, if I want to look a the growth or index of this year's YTD to the same time frame in the prior year, I'm getting a blank result, and after playing around w the dashboard to try and figure out why, it seems like it's because the Prior YTD value is getting attributed ONLY to that Prior Year. If I try to apply the Prior YTD calc to the current year, it doesn't register it. I'm trying to create a dashboard where a user can toggle between looking at monthly, quarterly and yearly time frames, and the YTD comparison is a key metric that my stakeholders are really asking for but haven't been able to sort out how to show it dynamically. Thanks in advance!
Thank you, you're welcome! Are you looking for something like this where you can overlay the two periods on top of one another? Or even to calculate the difference? public.tableau.com/app/profile/eric.parker/viz/OverlaySelectedandComparisonPeriodsonLineGraph/Title A video on this is dropping Wednesday!
I really hate that tableau is not responsive, I have to generate a report for each device, one for 45“ monitors and one for 55” monitors, it's a pain.
Have you tried creating "Range Size" Tableau dashboards? Might be a good solution for that situation.
Lekker man

Hi, if we use more summarise table as primary, and more details table as secondry. this case we get *, is it any possible way to remove *'s and get values
Hi, unfortunately that won't work. Data from secondary data sources aggregate to match the level of the primary data source. If possible, I would use the more detailed table as the primary table. I cover that concept a bit more in this video around 22:00 as well ruclips.net/video/TaxtdUzbcZs/видео.html
Killer tip! Aggravating that there has to be workarounds like this instead of just being able to select and copy direct from the worksheet, but I'll take it! Who knows, maybe by 2030 or 2040 Salesforce will take some of that AI R&D money and use it to fix Tableau to allow calcs based on fiscal years.
Thank you! Can we put you in charge of product development? 🙏
What about if I still want to see columns dividers for the other columns? thanks
Maybe try just changing the mark type to Polygon instead of this approach?
Really excellent.
Thank you, we're glad to hear you found it helpful!
excuse me sir, how could you record the video and make annotations directly like that? what app was it?
I used Zoom to record and the free tool Zoomit to screen annotate.

how can you create a field for each year's sales from the excel file? thank you
Hi! You'd need to do it one-at-a-tie like this: IF YEAR([Date]) = 2021 THEN [Sales] END Good luck!
excuse me sir, how could you record the video and make annotations directly like that? what app was it?
Hey! It's called Presentify! Great little app.
@@onenumbertableau thank you so much
Thank you so very much for this video. 😊Those who are not able to reset all the filters, please make sure your filters are not globally connected to all the sheets means all the filters should not be present in all the worksheets. Filters should be present only in one sheet where filters are created.
Thanks for that! That's a good point!
Does this mean i can't have filter applied to multiple sheets? My dashboard requires 5 sheets.
@@kennisrogers2585 you'll have to experiment a bit. This "Reset" button is a bit of a workaround and does have some limitations. We have managed to get it to work across multiple dashboards before. However, remember that when you're viewing the dashboard in Public/Server/Cloud, you'll have a button to reset the view to default, which might be useful too!
you truly are the Tableau GOAT. I would've never thought to change it to discrete.
Thank you, so glad to hear you found this helpful!
Can I use a parameter as a look-back period?
Hi! Sure! There are loads of ways to filter dates with parameters in Tableau. For example, here's a video on how to filter the selected and comparison periods at the same time: ruclips.net/video/NbD1qnIY4ok/видео.html
Okie, couple of questions and a comment. Can anyone create alerts, or only specific licenses can do so? If it's the latter, does RLS apply when someone subscribes to my alert? And on a final point, I think it would've been nice if you showed how the alert looks like in the email. Thanjs
Hey! :) In general, users should have a Creator or Explorer license while Viewers can receive alerts but can't create them. Alerts are based on the data in the view, and data they're authorised to view (with their RLS restrictions). So if I create an alert for "Sales > $5000" and I only have permission to view East Region sales, the alert will only trigger for a Sale exceeding $5000 in the East Region. And yes - that would have been a good addition! Thanks for the feedback!

So glad to hear it. Thanks for letting us know!
thank you for posting this! please post getting an average of top 30%, mid 40% and bottom 30% .
Hi! I think you could do that by writing a calc that segments those groups, adding it to the rows shelf, and then adding an average line at the Pane level. The calculation would be something like this: IF RANK_PERCENTILE(SUM([Sales])) <= .3 THEN "Top 30%" ELSEIF RANK_PERCENTILE(SUM([Sales])) <= .7 THEN "Middle 40%" RANK_PERCENTILE(SUM([Sales])) <= 1 THEN "Bottom 30%" END Good luck!
Great genius
Thank you, we're glad to hear it sounds like this was helpful!
So many things that should be basic functions in Tableau seem to have to be completed by bodges and workarounds.
Just depends. Tableau is an amazing analysis tool, but it isn't designed to be a spreadsheet tool like Excel or Google Sheets. You can do workarounds to get it there, but that wasn't the original intent and design. You might be interested to check out the Tableau Table Viz Extension if you're trying to build spreadsheets in Tableau: onenumber.biz/blog-1/2024/12/18/tableau-table-viz-extension-explained
This was a very helpful video. Thanks for all your efforts.👍 I have a request. As per latest update the Tableau DA exam does not have any lab questions. Can you please share the possible important areas as per latest Exam format and updates?
Hey! Sorry for the late reply - and thanks for the message. I think all the information stays the same in terms of sections of information you'll need to know - it's just the format of the exam that's slightly different. I found this section pretty helpful when preparing: www.tableau.com/learn/certification/tableau-certified-data-analyst-exam-guide Hope that helps!
Thanks for making this video. It was a huge help!
You are welcome, thanks for letting us know! We always appreciate that.
Is there a way to customize that?
If you add fields to the tooltip of the Marks card, they should show up in the initial data preview. However, the experience is not fully customizable unfortunately. You could always look into allow the user to drilldown to a detailed sheet: ruclips.net/video/lG6HgkaKwTU/видео.html

When I apply this and I select top 10 I don't get the same values in the first 5 as when I select top 5. Same if I select top 5, then top subject is Social Sciences with 15 but if I select top 2 then Natural/Life Sciences is the top subject with 21. Is there anyway to combat this so that the top values stay the same?
Hi, that sounds really unexpected. Are there any other filters changing or being applied? It seems like the value ranks should not switch like that unless there is something else impacting it. The other thing worth looking at is the scope/direction that is applied to the RANK Table Calculation. If you aren't super familiar with that topic, you can brush up on it in this video starting around 8:00 ruclips.net/video/oAtBy0wWN0I/видео.html&ab_channel=OneNumber-TableauExperts
Thanks for the amazing video, top content quality. You totally deserve a better mic though!!!

MAX is not popping up
Hi! If you aren't able to right-click and drag to add the calculation, you can always change the aggregation from SUM to MAX after the fact too. Just hit the dropdown on the pill, select the Measure breakout menu and select "MAX". Good luck!
@@onenumbertableau Hi, i am having another problem with the PIE chart label overcrowding. @@bjoy20101 Hi! There's not perfect way to handle this but one option is to overlay a small pie chart inside of a larger one so the slices appear like they're in the middle of the larger slices. Can you color them the same as zeroes? In that case, maybe just the ZN function could help e.g. ZN(SUM([Sales]))
Hi, This is a great video. Thanks for taking time in showcasing this method of calculation 🙂. I have a question, if we want to apply the same as of current date how do we do it. For example if an employee is hired on 12/07/2022 (dd/mm/yyyy) and today is june 20th 2022. Then this person shouldn't be taken in to account until we have passed the hiring date 12/07/2022. Your thoughts on this is very much appreciated
You could probably just add a filter like [Unified Date] <= TODAY() and then it will filter out future data. Let me know how that works!
This was a short but excellent refresher for me. Thanks for this video!!!
So glad to hear it, you're welcome!
Thank you , but in situation if we have need 3 colors as red for negatif , white for 0 and green for positif , how could we do as best aproach ?
Hi! You could try to set a 3 step color with a diverging color palette or you could even create you own custom diverging palette you can use in the sheet. More on that here: onenumber.biz/blog-1/2019/4/17/creating-a-custom-color-palette-for-tableau
Your videos are always the best, please I have a question. It is possible to click on the button of one container, automatically hiding the other and displaying the desired one, simulating automatic switching between them. Because clicking to open and then clicking to close is harmful to the user. I tried a few things and didn't succeed. Thank you very much and congratulations on the channel!!
