Fire damaged Seiko 7A28-7120 Gen 1 renovation
In this video, I take a fire-damaged Seiko Gen 1 and bring it back to life. The distressed cosmetic appearance is retained but the movement is stripped and serviced, with new crystal and gaskets to bring it back to full working order and to make it a useable watch once more. The video includes stills of the movement rebuild but is not a complete record and does not show lubrication and other elements of the servicing process. Everything was done in accordance with the Seiko Technical Guide.

Rigging a 'Marine Nationale' elastic strap for fixed bars

Most MN elastic straps on the market are designed for use with spring bars. Here is a quick and easy way to adapt these straps for use with fixed bars, like CWC divers and chronographs. Better off doing this with a cheap one and not a really expensive one. And do take care, the video involves knives and blowtorches so , safety first!

CWC G10: stem and movement removal

People often get a bit stuck when they have to remove the stem and crown from watches, and as this is necessary in order to get the movement out of the case, that can be a bit of a problem. In this video we look at how to extract the stem from a CWC G10, so that you can get the movement, dial and hands out. The same process works for CWC quartz divers as well.

    Thank you for this video. However i dont seem to get it to work. My spring seem rather short and the bezel does not stay on for very long. Could i be missing something with my retaining spring? That its placed wrongly? Note that i have replaced the glas aswell. Best regards

    • @sumacwatches6149
      @sumacwatches6149 7 дней назад

      Hi. The springs seem to be made to slightly different specs at different times - some are longer/shorter and some are slightly heavier/lighter gauge wire, so that shouldn't make too much difference. I would carefully check each straight section of the retaining wire and make sure it is flat. If there is an upwards bend then one of the flats may not be slipping over the flange when you fit it and when you turn the bezel is basically unzips and the bezel comes off. The other issue I have seen is that the flange on the bezel can be worn or damaged, and the affect is the same. As you turn the bezel the wire slips off at the point where the flange is worn and then the rest follows as you continue to turn the bezel. If that is the problem then the case would need to be repaired by someone who does micro-welding, or find a new case - they do come up from sale sometimes.

    This is fantastic. Thank you. Just curious, should you know...would parts from a run-of-the-mill, non-hacking ETA2750 work as replacement parts in a CWC W10's ETA movement? Excepting the parts involved in hacking and the split-stem, naturally. I had my W10 expertly serviced in the UK early in 2020, then later in the year, it fell from my wrist while I was feeding my infant in the wee hours. Didn't fasten the strap appropriately, in my midnight stupor. A couple of local watchmakers couldn't get it quite right, so I'm hoping that someone more experienced can, if I provide them a spare movement for parts. I appreciate any information you can provide!

      With difficulty. You either spend a fortune on a very expensive bezel removal tool, like the Bergeon one - the cheap versions on Amazon tend not to work, although some people have had success with them. Generally I carefully lever them off with a stanley knife blade tapped in between the bezel and case, protected with a bit of polythene. Start between the lugs at the 6 position and as the gap opens up, work your way around and after a while it pops off.

    The more intriguing question is how to remove the bezel?

    • @JosFiner
      @JosFiner 4 месяца назад

      That could be a different video! There is a bezel removal tool which is a large set of pliers with nylon/composite inserts that is widely available, but unless you buy an absolutely top end one (Bergeon = £715 +VAT) then they are not much use against a CWC diver bezel. The most practical technique is to open up a gap by gently tapping in a thin knife blade between the case and the bezel and then widen/extend the gap with a case knife - taking extreme care not to damage the case. With lesser watches this approach could distort the bezel, which would then need to be straightened, but the Monnin-type bezel rings are pretty sturdy so this is a less of a risk. Once the gap is big enough the bezel will pop off. If you are working on an SBS then there is a risk of damaging the PVD coating, so I would say if you do not need to remove the bezel, leave it alone.

Wobbly crown could be missing crown gasket, or just very worn/perished gasket, could be missing friction-fit washer that holds the gaskets in place inside the crown, could be wrong diameter crown or pendant tube. Step 1. Retaining spring must be completely flat. Put it on a flat surface to check. bend the spring wherever it is not flat to correct it. Keep going until it is touching the flat surface all the way around. Step 2. When it is fitted the angles of each section should touch the back of the recess into which it fits. Again, bend the spring at the angles until each of the angled bends is touching the back of the recess. It takes a bit of trial and error. Step 3.Make sure that each straight section does not project out too far from the inside of the bezel - just slightly is correct. If necessary, bend the straight sections so they sit further back (this will mean doing step 2 again...).

    @sumacwatches6149 You make things look too easy. When are you going to do a video for the current manufactured CWC SBS DIVER ISSUE (QS120-DD) and where to get the Friction Ball for it to remove case in the field, which batteries and internal parts subject to loss in field are required, Is there a brand and make of Friction Ball you recommend, please link. I take it, not made in Asia! Next point, what about the environmental pressurized seal, is refilling that seal somrthing we can do in the field? If opening the case back, results in loss of the pressure seal, then how much of a "military" fit watch is this? Imagine if all your other kit, lasers, optics, night vision, etc., lost their pressure seal when you open the battery compartment to replace batteries, just to be on the safe side, before going out each night. You see the point? Even if an Aimpoint T2 battery lasts 7+ years while in the ON position, some people like to change out batteries in everything before going out that night. That's a basic requirement and expectation, in a "military" watch, you would think.

      Hi, sorry for slow reply. For friction ball buy Bergeon brand - you can get from Amazon and they are quite cheap. Batteries are covered in the video on CWC diver battery replacement, although the later divers with ETA movement have a slightly different set up inside, and the more recent watches have a Ronda movement. There are no internal components other than battery that should require replacement in the field. Silicon grease may be handy to re-grease the case back gasket if the back is removed for battery replacement.

    Thank you for the info, I struggled opening one of my G10 6B (Air force) variants as these have no battery hatch. Broke even a case opener knife on it... All fine know but pressing the caseback on the watch again needs a good caseback press.

      Sounds like it was well stuck on! Yes, you need a good crystal/case press to snap the case back onto the mid case. There is some information on crystal presses in our newest video.

      Next on the list! Will show case back removal, stem extraction and removing movement from the case. Should be up with the next week or so.
