    My students struggle with this and scientific notation. I decided to put a video explaining scientific notation and how to use the calculator to do calculations using scientific notation. I am good with dimensional analysis because I am an engineer and been doing these calculations for a long time. But for students it can be hard to grasp and some just use google. The way I think is easier is not to overthink the procedure to much. Divide by the unit you want to get rid of and multiply by the unit you want to have. In the end Is just about ratios. I do like your idea of using shapes.

      @@msrazzchemclass I survived 6 plus years of college with a TI 85. I posted a video on my channel on how to input use the calculator when doing scientific notation. Because I think it can help students to get away from using google. Don't get me wrong I love how technology has become better over time. And I even been writing my own code in Python but I think when young it helps to know the why of things. Too much technology makes it difficult not teach and grade specially when they just put the answers without showing the work.

    So I am a new chemistry teacher in a charter school I been feeling overwhelmed with work, between having to create my lesson plans and my presentation for teaching. Do you have any advice on how to simplify lesson planning and preparing for class. My background is in chemical engineering but one thing is to know chemistry another to teach it. The school gave me the book late and they didn't included a lab manual so I got lucky I found one in the classroom and I have to develop the curriculum. I feel I been overworking myself.

    • @msrazzchemclass
      @msrazzchemclass 2 месяца назад

      @pjgonzalez40 I empathize with you! The first year is the hardest with finding balance for sure. It sounds like lesson prep is what is most time-consuming for you. Have you thought about purchasing a curriculum? Your school may even offer funds in a budget. There are some wonderful teacher authors out there who have done the heavy lifting of creating resources that work well. Why recreate the wheel? I am a full-time classroom teacher and sell my teacher vetted resources: Msrazzchemclass.com If you prefer not to purchase a curriculum and create everything yourself, there is just no way around the time demands of that endeavor. But once you have gone through it for a year, all you will have to do next year is modify, which is far less time-consuming.

    Flipped classroom has always scared me. I don’t know what I would do if students didn’t watch the videos at home, and consequently would be totally lost trying to do problems during class. Nice video though. Reminder to look for opportunities to get students more engaged which is critical. Thx!

    • @msrazzchemclass
      @msrazzchemclass 10 месяцев назад

      Thanks so much for watching, and know that is the #1 concern I hear from teachers. This is how I handle it - I am a big believer in natural consequences. So, students that don't engage with the video are not prepared to participate in the activity for the day, therefore they must complete the work when they come into class. I will ask those students to relocate to a separate area of the classroom to complete the assignment. They can then rejoin after I have confirmed they have watched the video and taken notes. Students learn very quickly that they must do the work before coming to class. Another thing that has worked well is incorporating a do now quiz as soon as your students come in. Students take the quiz on the content assigned in the video. The questions asked are typically low-level, but definitely something students cannot answer if they didn't do the video. The important thing is that students are held accountable for the content the next day in class. How you decide to do that is up to you, but I have had far more compliance using these strategies.

    I am getting my BS in chemistry and exploring different job options. I don't know if you have a video on this already but I would love to know what got you into it. Thanks.

      My chemistry teacher in high school inspired me to become a chemistry teacher. I would recommend you observe some chemistry classes at your local high school. That will give you some insight if this career is for you. Best of luck!
