Bro was right! I don't want my comment to come across as critical but I had to come back and say this. I was one of the original 500 who ordered the Apex back a month ago, and tbh I was very optimistic to hop into the world of some of my favorite high end RUclipsrs I revere. But 2 days ago after wondering when I might actually receive my order I reached out and emailed Support to get some answers. I canceled my order and got a refund because I was told all Apex orders were halted up until "the end of Feb" due to firmware issues with Sony bodies. Now I'm tempted to finally pull the trigger and getting the S5IIX I've always wanted and picking up a used Remus lens instead. I saw this video when you first released it and remembered it so clear once I got that response from their support. I'm so eager to jump into the Anamorphic world but I had to return to leave this comment.

bpu battery is fine the idea is you dont need to use the very tall battery, bu60 is fine maybe you will just to change it oftenly than bpu90, i think blackmagic is in the right track is will be compact in battery.

I've been racking my head for months trying to get a straight answer, maybe you can help. Does the S5iix crop to ASP-C for any rates above 48fps? Or can you get a 48fps with the full frame sensor? It looks like all of the menu options there stated ASP-C correct?

For cinema, there is no need to auto focus cameras ! This why's BMD is the best cinema camera company for the best price too

I think half of your wish list is targeting the wrong demographic. In my opinion the next pocket camera needs to either be a successor to the pocket 4k or a Pyxis micro that is the spiritual successor to the BMMCC, but with the pyxis monitor for control. I personally think either an MFT or Super35 sensor is still viable so long as focal reducers exist, but that would require the mount to be either MFT or L, or heaven forbid swappable MFT and L. To me the camera with the monitor should cost no more than $1500. After that, all other requests would be advance iterations that cost more, but the pocket 4k is getting long in the tooth, and really needs a tiny box variant more than anything.

Love Carl's live interviews, it's the closest we've ever been to directly asking questions to these companies. He got some very interesting things from a Canon rep too.

Best honest answer: As we borrow sensors from other brands, we're still waiting on either Fuji/Panasonic to lent us one of their working AF ones. That guy literally gave the same answer as the Panasonic CEO before releasing the S5II. But hey BMD folks, either S5II and GH7 now have good AF on their sensors, is a matter of time to see them on your systems!

Work in a small body

Look at the URSA Cine 12K, they already are able to map the focus marks using AI from a manual lens. So they already have distance information, the next step is to create a vision system + follow focus to complete autofocus.

Phase detect autofocus will hinder image quality. The reason we all use blackmagic is for the image quality and braw. Braw is now available externally, so image quality and price are what is left. If the price goes up and the image goes down I will just use Panasonic more at that point.

I wish they would come out with autofocus camera. It would make my life so much easier. I help film and sometimes I miss focus. It’s hard for me to tell. So I would really appreciate an autofocus camera

I think tge answer for BMD is to make an Add-On Lidar. Keep tge camera price down for Those tgat dont want ir need autofocus, but an affordavle way to add it. The appeal of BM cameras is tgey are an affordable body that you can trick oyt witg unique and intresting glass..Give me a lidar sensor I can hook up to a motor for my lens.. across any abd all tgeir cameras and then just make it buolt in on you lr next Ursas and Pyxis

As a camera company saying "we're aware of it and looking into it" is the best damn answer you can give. That is all we as customers can expect from the company. Them doing their best to implement it to their own standards and not just a money grab by implementing tech simply for the sake of customers wanting it.

i thing Blackmagic can skip on sensor phase detection and jump to LiDAR. DJI LiDAR is good but it requires so many parts to get working. if black magic can have something as simple as the older DJI 3d focus unit but tightly integrated that would be great

As of Q1 2025, there's little reason to use a BMPCC except for the built-in ND. Because the Nikon Z6 III can do almost everything BMPCC 6K can do, except it's full frame and with fast and reliable subject detection autofocus. I think you'll be waiting at least 4 years to catch up with the Nikon's autofocus, and that's a best case, optimistic scenario even if Blackmagic put a big investment into autofocus. Take your pick, built in ND or Autofocus.

These most recent AF anamorphs are certainly lacking the anamorphic character. Ground breaking in terms of AF capability, but no wow factor, sadly.

The frame skip is from p24 upsampled to p30. It's very noticeable in panning shots, you can't unsee it after you've seen it. It's actually a RUclips compression problems and I try to tell people about it but they still think you need to shoot YT videos in p24. The Blazar Apex lens looks better when shot on full frame with 1.1x crop. There is more barrel distortion and anamorphic character. For best results you can use a Sony A7C II with that new AI chip in APS-C model clear image zoomed all the way in.

I’ve noticed that the PDMovie Live Air Smart is horrible when you use longer rods. If you use a Lens Cuff or if your lens has a 1/4 inch screw, you can attach the lidar with a shorter rod which eliminates the rod wiggle.

I'm contemplating getting a Pyxis to supplement my BMCC and UMP setups. I love my camera gear and am guilty of sometimes buying the slightly "cooler" version of something to share and show to my filmmaker friends. A few months ago, I had to finally admit that i'm a camwh*re.
