    It's organic sediment from the Missoula floods of the last ice age. Extremely fertile soil.

    The Willamette Valley was called The Valley of Death by the native Indians. That's due to all the moss and mold the lives off that organic matter. Respiratory troubles abound, not to mention the allergies.

    Willamette Valley farmers for the 40 years I have lived here have steadily depleted organic matter that it took nature a million years to deposit. Four or five decades ago the soil was dark, nearly black with organic matter. For decades farmers harvested hundreds of thousands of acres of grass seed and then burned the leftover straw in place, sending billowing smoke into all their neighboring communities. When they finally outlawed field burning, farmers began bailing the straw and shipping it to the Far East by the millions of tons annually. The result of steadily burning or selling all the organic matter: the once-black soils are now a light tan-colored silt with low organic content that blows billowing dust into all their neighboring communities when they plow or plant. Putting organic matter back into the soil is a foundational principle of soil conservation in other places, but apparently not in Oregon.

    • @thebrodybiss1466
      @thebrodybiss1466 11 дней назад

      Almost like they should have let them keep burning the fields.

    • @TheForestCrone
      @TheForestCrone 9 дней назад

      Can confirm. Although we do get free recycling for organic materials like left over food and grass clippings that the state gives to the farmers. While I'm sure this helps, it's not enough to offset organic materials being stripped out of the soil so regularly without replenishing. We really need to start thinking about vertical hydroponic farming.
