POV Podium Finish at Sea Otter Gravel Race 2022 | La Gravilla M 30 -39
One of my goals for 2022 was to participate in more cycling events and races. The peak event for me was the 2022 Sea Otter Classic "La Gravilla" Gravel race hosted by Life Time Events. I had spent the leading months training as hard as I could in-between work to be mentally and physically prepared for this race. The previous year, I finished in 6th place, which was a major surprise to me as it was my first cycling race ever. So, this year my goal was to break into the top 5.
I have ridden these trails a bit and I knew the key to being successful is to not get bottlenecked on the single track. So I used all of my power off the start to try and get to the trails first. I feel like my descend...

My goal for this event was to hit a sub 2 minute laptime. That obivously didn't happen, but I was able to get a lot closer than my previous attempt of a 2:03.7. This lap was set on my second session of the day on lap 3 or 4. I finally felt confident with the new tires and started to push the lap a bit more. No such thing as an unfair bike choice in races like this IMHO - no matter what you choose you'll have a certain disadvantage at some point or another. No one is forcing you to ride a gravel bike ;-) thanks for the nice long race footage! Makes for good watching while training.

      @fubar66 Год назад

      No dropper for me, it isn't super technical in my opinion, but then again I ride lots of mtb trails on my gravel bike so take that with a grain of salt. The trails can be quite bumpy out here and with all the rain we've had, there are definitely going to be some ruts. The hardest part for me is when it gets sandy. I broke my leg a few months ago and I won't be racing again this year unfortunately, but good luck and have fun out there. Feel free to ask any more questions if you have them.

    • @fubar66
      @fubar66 Год назад

      It's a cross country course, so depending on how comfortable you are riding single track might make the difference. 650b wouldn't be a bad idea as it can be really bumpy out there. It is a little sandy in some parts and hardpack in others so personal preference on tread. The pathfinder pros weren't enough tread for me, but the Terrano wets were really good in the sand but slow on the true gravel.

    • @fubar66
      @fubar66 2 года назад

      The best advice I can give is to go out early and ride the trails as much as you can. It can be very hard packed and bumpy in spots, and extremely loose and sandy in others. The braking bumps can get really bad in spots. I was flirting with danger with my lower tire pressures to soak up some of the bumps without being too low to risk a flat or bent rim. Tire choice is also pretty crucial, the Terrano Wets worked great for me in the loose sand, but definitely felt slower on the hard pack and tarmac. In general, ride your gravel bike on mountain bike trails a lot to get comfortable descending down obstacles and maintaining speed. Go fast, take chances!

      @@Peterdinh3 I drove them for a while on the street and they were fine. That said I burn through a set at the track about every 4 events, so they don't last super long. If you want something that will be ok for a long time, check the Hankook RS4's. I would highly recommend having a track set and a street set.

    Is this dyno’d? What kind of power does it make?

      I have not dyno'd it yet, waiting for after I make headers. Probably 5 or 10 over stock.

      It's all about keeping your momentum up in the corners. Corner exit is so important for us because we don't have the power to hide any mistakes mod corner. Smooth in, Fast out.

    Awesome lap man! Looks like you were fighting for traction- Is this set up typically for drifting or racing? What tires were you on if you dont mind me asking (Size, type, etc). Was a blast to watch!

      Nexen SUR4G's, I think they're 245/40/17's iirc. The rear toe was completely out so I was definitely fighting the car a bit here

    • @fubar66
      @fubar66 4 года назад

      @@nfloresta86 of course! It is a timer animation I made in after effects. I exported the timer to match my frame rate and then overlay that on top of my various videos using premiere pro. I then stop the timer on my time that day and flash the result on screen.
