I first learned crochet back in elementary but I picked it back up during the pandemic, I have the basics down and the accessible tutorials so it was not hard to get going. I mostly do it as a past time so my hands are doing something when I watch movies and videos on youtube with the added merits of having finished products. I give them as gifts to friends which is nice because I'm a big gift giver. I also sell crochet goods every now and then mostly flowers and amigurumi. I'dm say I love this hobby because it's a useful skill, if not a bit stressful at times

One thing I love about handmade clothes is the side effect that the creator then learns just how much effort goes into a garment. And then it spirals into appreciating all your clothes and being more mindful about it, in a world where mindfulness is replaced with automation.

I crochet now but I started with knitting because I love cozy clothes and enjoy making things by hand. I like how there are so many video tutorials for crochet, more than when I started knitting though there are more now. It can be an expensive hobby but it doesn't have to be, so it's very accessible. Though I don't have nearly as much time as I'd like to do all the projects on my boards.

I disagree with the take here. Someone can be very rich and influectial, live in luxury but can still be relatable. Kardashians might be relatable to people becouse they have big family, Kim might be ralatable becouse she is of unusual figue so girl with this kimd of body relate t her, other might be mothers like her. You can ralate to celebrity becouse of political views, sense of style etc. That is how people realete to celebrites and othe people generally. The money is not the most impportant thing.

I've been crocheting since I was 9 and stopped for years (no particular reason). I was recommended crochet videos here on RUclips and I really loved the patterns, so I bought some yarn and picked it back up again. Before this trend, I remember being made to feel bad for wanting to make my own things because "that's for old ladies." Not that there's anything wrong with being elderly, but I think people just saw it as something a grandmother would do, hence the stereotype. I started making my own leg warmers and a stuffed animal that I'm wanting to gift to my niece. There should be no shame, no matter who you are, how old you are, in desiring to create a piece and work of art that you made with your own hands. Seeing other girls and people my age starting to pick this up feels nice. It goes against the norm and there's nothing more fun than trying something new.

I bought a cactus crochet kit and realised I couldn’t understand how the written patterns worked and didn’t know any terms. I learned from RUclips, started making squares, progressed to bags, hats and 2.5 years later I’m making my own clothes etc and I still haven’t finished that little crochet kit 😂

I think it's still important to think about where your yarn comes from, who produces it and under what circumstances. Because even if you are not participating in fast fashion in that sense, it still is textile

  • @lillabarta2154

I agree with the statement that crocheting your own clothes contributes to slow fashion with a caveat: I think that is only true until you use good quality yarn. With the resurgence of crochet we see a yarn itself as being a fast fashion item, for example the £2 yarn that ALDI sells. A lot of yarn is made from polyester that is awful for the environment and the clothes you make from it can deteriorate in quality after a couple washes and wears. I know that not everyone can afford real wool or high quality materials but I think we cannot call crocheting a slow fashion movement if we use materials that fast fashion would. There are ways to get good quality yarn for cheap e.g. thrifting or unravelling old sweaters that can be sustainable without buying into fast fashion yarn.

I LOVE to crochet!- In fact, I'm crocheting right now! In December of '21, I saw my friend sitting on the lawn playing with some yarn and a "knitting needle" and was interested. I asked her what she was doing and she said she was crocheting! I asked her if she could show me how. Fast forward 9 months later, and I'm selling at my first craft fair. I didn't know it was popular until recently.

It's also frustrating when celebs misrepresent themselves as coming from middle/lower class backgrounds (and being self-made when they aren't). People like an "underdog" story. Taylor Swift was born to two billionaire parents, but she models herself as "the girl next door" from Tennessee (she's not even from Tennessee ... she's from Pennsylvania) who earned her way into the industry, when in fact she got it because her billionaire father bought major stock in the record label that signed her. She's never acknowledged these privileges. Grimes also cosplayed as a working-class communist, even after having kids with a billionaire. Then there's someone like Donald Trump with his wealthy dad and his "small loan of a million dollars". And lots of industry plant rappers that lie about coming from "the hood." It's okay to hold certain privileges - we don't choose what boxes we're born into. Doesn't inherently make you a bad person. But we do choose honesty about our privilege with others and ourselves. As well as how we choose to use that privilege. It's actually fine if these women wanna enjoy their wealth, but they also can't really lie to themselves or us by saying they are just like us. They aren't. I personally know a woman who lied about being middle class repeatedly ... her dad was a multimillionaire. She kept telling other people to check their privilege while she actively lied about hers. It's also important to note that luxury fashion brands are usually made with slave labor and unsustainable materials, so this influencers should be careful with what they promote and consume.

I picked up crochet to make stuffies for myself and my loved ones! My mom taught me a little as a kid, but I've been learning online through still pictures and text, as that works best for my brain. This video seemed very well balanced and researched and I love it! Thank you for your thoughts and the clips you shared!

I fell in love with knitting in high school. It amped up over the pandemic because, like many people, I needed something to do with my hands. I won't say I'm full-on making my own wardrobe. But I have at least started with accessories.

Really interesting video, thank you! I've been crocheting for a year now, it appealed to me for a few reasons: 1 - you can make cool stuff 2 - i love having something to do that isn't too physically challenging for relaxing time 3 - i was quitting smoking, and the only thing that appealed about smoking was the repetitive hand movement, so i figured crochet was an excellent replacement! I've also found that crochet is GREAT for ADHD. Keeping me busy and focused on something whilst watching TV or youtube feels so much more fulfilling AND relaxing.

i’ve been thinking about this kind of things for months because of moya’s insta which has become more of an aesthetic than a real relatable person, so thank u for making this video♡ for my frenchies out there : i think léna situations also falls under this phenomenom, but in her own way because : 1. she studied fashion so she knows what she’s talking about/understands the industry on some level 2. is still somewhat relatable thanks to the vlogs d’aout even though some (or every lol) of the activities she does are like expensive af. plus the vlogs d’aout are what made her skyrocket to fame so she kinda has to keep filming them, they’re just more adapted to her rich lifestyle i guess 3. she’s not from an english-speaking country so i guess she has less visibly (or had because now billie eilish is on her podcast sooooo) if english-speaking knew about her im 100% sure she’d be featured in this video!

I learned crochet from my grandma when I was around 7-8 and now I’ve been crocheting half my life lol . It was really funny to me bc In a few years I went from being the ONLY person in my area that knew who to crochet, to being the “grandma” of a newly formed crochet group (bc I was the most experienced lol).

As a teenager who recently took up crochet because of its trendiness, I think that it’s become a trend in gen Z like thrifting has, because it’s sustainable, and that sustainability is romanticized as aesthetic, which my generation loves. I think the aesthetic and fun aspect of crochet is a big part of its resurgence, though, not just sustainability. It makes people feel cute to wear a homemade granny square bandana they crocheted, while also giving people a sense of accomplishment of avoiding fast fashion.

I started crochet two months ago and I am obsessed I cant stop even if my hands hurt, I wanted to learn it so I can make gifts for people I love and make clothes for myself and not support fast fashion brands. I already stopped purchasing from global brands like zara ana H&M for like a year, and when I need something I look for a local brand, my aunt starting a brand also helped (she designs everything and go to a tailor to sew the designs). plus being a graphics and media student I was tired of screens and needed a new hobby, crochet seemed perfect in this economy.

I think you should’ve also talk about the end of recession pop in the early/mid 2010s which was pioneered by Lorde “Royals” which was very minimal with Hiphop inspired instrumentation that influenced a lot of artists including reputation and which perfectly transitions to the late 2010s where Hiphop was at peak based from the charts. The Harry mention was kind of a reach since that wasn’t known by gp in late 2010s.

gen z crocheter here, i began crocheting in late early this year because to be honest, i struggle quite a lot with thinking of gifts to give people and it's just such a great feeling to see someone like a piece that was made with care. also started because i do quite like the idea of making clothes and i know a couple of designer friends who have their own brand and all, and crocheting helps me in fulfilling my desire to make clothes i'll wear and also being able to try patterns and giving it a bit of a personal flare.
