Building a Clarifying Tank for Desilting Water at our Mill-site Part 2
Using Sketchup Pro 2023 3D modeling software, I drafted up the proposed design to convert a grain silo into a clarifying tank to treat and manage the silts in the water during our milling process. I want to keep it a closed loop system where nothing touches the ground.
As a result, clean water will be recirculated into our milling circuit which will have positive results on our gold recovery using gravity concentration methods which are environmentally friendly.
We will walk you through each step in order to make your own clarifying tank. This tank can also be used as a hopper, leach tank, or a dust collection system with additional modifications. If you need one built, please reach out t...

      @richardservatius5405 ok, so I've tested aluminum sulfate and got incredible results when I raised the pH to 8. Colloidal particals dropped out in 4min. I want to find the balance and introduce just enough alum for the process to work. I don't want excess to be recirculated and cause losses on the shaker table and centrifuge. Is that what you mean about causing other problems? Right now we're not leaching, only gravity concentration. I'm concerned about TDS and surface tension though.

    That was fun to watch and see you use what you have to make the job easier. When I was in High School (an Industrial High School) in the mid 1970's I picked a credit hour class called "Wrought Iron Decor" Every student was taught to use Oxy-Acetylene to cut and weld. Cutting torches small and large, what p.s.i. to use on the gauges. My teacher was surprised when I asked if I could use the steel hangers our parents would get when they had their clothes dry cleaned. There was a coating on the hangers to prevent the steel from putting stains such as rust on the clothes. The coating was like a shellac but for the most part was a really good flux. Stank when burnt but did an excellent job of creating that bead. I built a beverage holder for my truck as I kept breaking the newly invented plastic crap. My teacher was impressed with my idea. My first attempt at cutting a piece of flat steel to make a circle didn't work then the teacher had to explain some mathematics to acquire my results. Teacher also commented on the ideas I would create on copy paper with measurements. He asked where I came up with my ideas. I said my dad was Nuclear Ballistic Engineer.

    • @mineoperator
      @mineoperator 4 дня назад

      John, I really appreciate these experiences. I haven't learned how to weld with oxy-acetylene yet. I've learned 3 methods so far and have been swamped with projects. I can't wait to learn that. Harry just learned that method in a class he took. That's really creative with the hangers. After you watch part 2, which will be released in the next week or two, you'll probably have a much easier way to make the extended conical section of the tank that I made. Fun learning from others. What's crazy is as soon as this project is done, there are 5 more fabricating projects lined up. Then somehow mine, mill, smelt, fabricate, reclaim, sample and repeat. Not hard at all lol. Oh ya, and still manage my day job!

      I love that idea. At least take 3 months off during the summer when it's 115-120 and travel, etc. My wife and I got to camp in the Eastern Sierras and enjoy June Lake, Convict Lake and Lake Sabrina. So beautiful up there. After we install the clarifying tank, centrifuge, and a few other fixes, we plan on turning on the mill at the beginning of October! We have lots of ore to run and gold to get so stay tuned! We're thinking of away to give away some gold. Oh ya, the short should come before the video to help advertise the upcoming video. Unless it's just an update short or standalone.

      I really appreciate everything you said. So did my wife. I reflect on that paper route I had when I was 10-12 years old, washing cars and mowing lawns at a young age. My dad would take me to job sites during my summer break and I'd help him or just play around on scaffolding, piles of sand and aggregate that was gonna be used for a concrete pour, or cut ninja stars out of metal studs and throw them into drywall. I remember his reputation in the industry was well know to all. He had a good name and I took so much pride in that. Maybe, just maybe, these videos will inspire some to work hard and persevere through hardships. Either way, your comment made my day and I wanted to tell you that.

    • @mineoperator
      @mineoperator 10 дней назад

      I'm adding steel support on all sides of the tank. I'll support the conical section of the tank to the new and existing steel legs. I'm adding flat strap steel around the tank. Then, multiple cross support sections to each leg. The flanges and 4" steel pipe on the discharge/underflow are very heavy. That'll need support, too. The tank will hold approximately 1,110 gallons of water. That's 9,246 lbs. I'm looking forward to sharing Part 2 of the video. If you haven't watched part 1 yet, here's a link to it. @@mineoperator Let me know if you need any FEA analysis of the tank/silo or support connections and reinforcing. Your plan sounds good. The transition from the cylinder to the cone might need some thought. Stiffeners on the cone tied to hoop bands on the cylinder seem like a good idea. Cool project.

    • @mineoperator
      @mineoperator 10 дней назад

      @anthonysei You peaked my interest as that's over my head. I'm curious about the cone joint where it's welded to the upper cylinder. I'm also contemplating the footings. Ideally, I'd want to pour a concrete foundation or piers. Time and costs are issues. For the time being, if I make the footprint wide enough and the steel plates on each leg big enough, and the compaction of the sandy soil is 95%, could I just install it on some buried railroad ties. If $ was an issue I know what I'd do.

    • @anthonysei
      @anthonysei 10 дней назад

      @@mineoperator I guess it all depends on the thickness of the steel and how it's joined at the transition between the cylinder and The Cone. I did a quick sort of generic analysis here and I don't see any issues but you are correct in making sure your footings are substantial enough so that there is no settling that causes uneven load distribution

You can send me some detailed information and I could refine the model and look for problem spots but you seem to have a pretty good handle on what you need to do to reinforce it so I think you're probably good to go

The fabric can be reused, or repurposed as retaining walls with perhaps plants, because they are biodegradable. The bags, once full, can be hung allowing the water to drip out, if you need every drop...etc. You could mix cement allowing the filled bags to harden into stones for a more permanent retaining (just imagine stacking the bags). How are going to keep the organic material from contaminating your clean water.

    • @mineoperator
      @mineoperator 13 дней назад

      Very rarely do we run ore that has organics in it. When we mucked out a drift, there were organics from mice and rats. The mine dumps or tailings rarely have organics in it. We don't see organics with head ore. In the event we do, there's a screen after the mill and before the table that collects the majority of any organics. If some make it past that, the remaining would collect in the sandscrew, or 1 of 2 steel tanks with baffles after the screw. By that point, we're pumping the silty water into this clarifying tank. I'm sure we're gonna learn alot when we start testing this in the real world scenario.
