Braille Sounds
США
Добавлен 10 сен 2023
Braille Sounds is a new series where we get weird in the studio, go over production techniques, my experience as an artist and live performance setups.
Brooklyn based Praveen Sharma has always taken a genre absorbing, dancefloor-oriented approach to his output as Braille, effortlessly floating through house, techno, melancholic ambient and UK Bass. His singles on European labels Rush Hour (“The Year 3000”) and Hotflush Recordings (“A Meaning”) were critically acclaimed and set the stage for his full length album debut on LA based label Friends of Friends (“Mute Swan”). After a flurry of EP and single releases, Braille's second album, "Triple Transit" is due out on Hotflush Recordings on August 8th. Braille has also collaborated with artists such as Machinedrum (as Sepalcure) and Heather Pearls (as Pleasure Jail) and has had music placed in feature films like "Black Swan". His new series on RUclips, "Braille Sounds", give viewers a peak inside Braille's studio and writing process.

Let’s take a look at Floating Knobs “Cuisine” - a new sequencer for Eurorack (either in or out of the rack) with 8 channels of Gates and 4 channels of CV for your sequencing pleasure. Pretty happy with how the music in this one turned out - some nice examples of how to get some motion into static percussion sequences using CV. Hope you enjoy - let me know in the comments what your favorite sequ...

Why You Should Buy Push 3 for Live Eurorack Performances
Hitchcockian wig! You need a bird perched in that mess. 😉
What’s your spookiest synth? 🎃
8:45 wild spookymans over here
👻
It’s always my favorite watching you on the keyboard. Keep up the great work.
I love that swinging motion on this beat! Does the Cuisine have some parameter to add swing and imperfections to its timing or are you using the Flex parameter (or something similar) on Pam's to clock the sequencer this way?
Thanks so much! I’m not sure about cuisine but I almost always set my Pam’s flex parameter to 15% or 25% swing! I find 15% works with sequencer modules that usually freak out with heavy swing. Pam’s is the best 😎
Cuisine does not have a swing feature as swing can really easely be acheive using one track to internaly clock the other ones, offseting to taste one beat out of two. You could get a dynamic swing changing along you pattern or even have a "groove pool" and swap between those different grooves by just changing your clocking track pattern.
Love this! What are the drums running through?
There are a few bits. The breaks chain that comes in at the end is Mum m8 into BX preamp. (ALM). I have sub mixes of stuff also going into Apollo View Rabbit Hole -> Cunsa as well. And then for the beat repeat the drums go through the verbos multi delay!
always nodding along while editing these videos, what a vibe! those cymbal sounds @ 5:50 just do it for me... thanks for watching everyone!
Thanks for the chops as always bud!
What kind of sequencers are you all using in your rack?! Let me know in the comments 🙌🏽
So cool to see you back. I use the Verbos sequencer, it's really immediate but flexible enough, and I personally only need 5, 7 or 8 steps anyway :=) For drums, it's either Pam's or Steppy.
@@vinylarchaeologist Voltage Multistage? I use that one for sequencing breaks - it's super fun. I still have my Steppy but just end up using one channel for kicks now 😅 When I first started - Pams Pro sequenced pretty much everything - such a great module.
🙌🏼🕶️
Sounds great!
Thank you 🙌🏽
In the realm of DUB, aint nobody using eurorack, expetion only proove the rule. I build fx for dubsters since 7 years, i was asked once if i could make a eurorack module and it never happened. but as i'm wrighting and from what i hear, maybe "DUB" doesnt mean thesame thing for every body, i hear a filtered breakbeat and 90's techno slabs,,, the term dub comes from recording, it's a remixing technique, not a production element. but once again that's where i stand from... end of vid: what do you mean by "dub" exactly?
Yooooo! I feel you - dr alimantado def wasn’t messing with eurorack ;) so in this session, I have a bunch of dry tracks - dry synth stabs, dry break beat, dry bass. I’m manually throwing them through separate delays and reverbs to basically perform the audio live. That’s my understanding of what made the legends of dub so special - they took dry stems and brought them to a new place in outer space! It’s a studio technique that blurs the line between production and performance. In terms of the eurorack gear to check - with the right filters the Make Noise Mimeophon and Erbverbe can be used to create some fairly stereotypical dub textures!
This was awesome! You already had me at just the kick and chord
Thanks! Been pumping out stuff like this lately so there should be some more of it 😂
Thanks for watching everyone! Like and sub and let me know what you’re thinking in the comments below 🙌🏽
had that synth stab stuck in my head all week! love editing these modular jams, thanks for watching everyone :)
Thanks for the cuts my man!
absolutely love editing these jams, thanks for watching everyone!
The legend himself folks! 👏🏽
Delicious beat! ❤
Delicious module! 🙌🏽
Hell Yeah Hell Yeah. Take us through the polysynths next, dude!
Oooo ok! Chroma Polaris and Prophet 6 time maybe?
You're doing great videos! Keep it up, the algorithm will catch up to you at some point 💜 And say hello to Schnoodle!
Thanks so much! 🙇🏽♂️ I hope so 🤣
Any of you using a Moog semi modular?
I'm lukewarm on podcasts but I'm really glad I took the time to listen to this one. I'm working on finishing my 1st record and this is a great shot in the arm (at the tail end of many other awesome shots in the arm). But yeah. I'm also considering a second Octatrack 🤪
Hell yes! Glad this one inspired a bit. And yeah - 2 Octatracks is the move! I still miss mine 🥲
Would have been interested in hearing your thoughts and experience mixing in Atmos and how much it brought to the final sound. Hearing my summer 2024 jam Sour Patch Kiss all widened out swirling around my head listening to it on my Macbook is a joy.
Ahhhh I definitely should have touched on that. I’ll do a video on that when I’m mixing down my next album for sure! So glad you’re enjoying it it was a learning experience 😂 I consider the atmos mix the definitive mix - the lack of a master bus went from a nightmare to a dream - escape from the loudness wars!
Amazing and generous interview. ❤❤ Out of context of that is how I laughed to myself that you’re doing a great job getting out on the streams and what came to mind is from Ted Lasso. “He’s here, he’s there, he’s every f#@%ing -where Roy Kent” (Braille)
Such great news…all of it! YAY!!!
This was a fun one! Be sure to follow @scubaofficial’s new NADP channel @wenotdiving
Better than child sniffing sleepy joe
Love this! He’s weird-repulsive. Your track is 😎
great stuff
Thank you! 🙌🏽
killin it Praveen - this set up is amazing
Yooo thank you so much Sam! This RUclips 💩 is tough lol
Man I feel like the mental health tip and the not being lazy tip are in conflict for me. I sometimes have such a hard time giving myself space to create when I feel so fried.
Yeah I think of “don’t be lazy” more in the sense of “learn your craft” - that may have been a better title. But honestly if I’ve learned anything - it’s that you just have to get in there and put in the work. So often I’ve not been in the mood or thought what I was making was crap but then suddenly make a breakthrough and it’s a track I’ll release!
"My music is lofi or whatever, its raw... when really it just sounds like sh*t" - I DIED 🤣
😅😅😅 the truth will set you free
Well structured video. Excellent music too... Nice to see you how you managed to constrain your modular to kind of just self made synth, accepting the fact that you'e not utilizing its every option. It just serves a purpose. I think that's the hardest part for me incorporating my modular rig. Getting lost in finding the "right" configuration.
Yeah things became so much clearer when I stopped worrying about using a modular case to fulfill other people’s expectations and figured out how to use one to serve my own goals! Thanks for the kind words - anything else live performance related you’d be interested in seeing? Considering a pt 2. 😅
@@BrailleSounds Yeah I can relate to that... It's not just that though, it's also figuring out what the right configuration for yourself is. That means exploring all the functions of the modules (and combinations of modules), figuring out which ones to use and use not. I get lost in the forrest sometimes... And in the end I want to use all those functions to do justice to al the expensive modules, which results in not committing to a specific workflow that will provide musical results. I think that's a challenge with synths and gear in general, but particularly true for modular. I don' t know if you can distill a subject for a vid about that, but these are me thoughts about the subject 😎
@@LuctaeMusic I can seriously relate to this. Sometimes I feel guilty that I don't constantly redo my system but then I remember that it results in lots of music made, even if I'm not necessarily using each module to its fullest. I'll definitely try and incorporate some of your thoughts into an upcoming "how to get into modular" series I've been planning!
I do a similar thing (sans modular system). Usually my remixes tend ending up being quite the departures from the original track. I'll listen to the original track a couple of times, and then each of the stems individually, sometimes with only a couple at a time. That usually sparks and idea and then start from there building the track, and almost like sampling off of parts from the stems. But there are definitely some rules I keep: main melody lines or vocals I'll kinda keep intact, except maybe for some added fx treatment for my mix, but I will often change their placement on the arrangement. It ends up being almost a reinterpretation of the song, but it's still a remix to me.
Yeah I find it hard not to add new chords or melody which really take a song in a new direction. Love that you also like pushing a remix pretty far from the original! Definitely don’t need modular to do a similar thing 🙌🏽
I love this video the most!!!!
🙌🏽
Love the vulnerability and honesty Praveen ... I would have gotten so much out of this before I convinced myself I'm terrible at music and gave up!
thanks Noah!!! never say never 😅
thank you for all these tips, they are so important so much wisdom!
😂😂😂 thanks for the support homie

loved cutting this one! these tips pertain not only to music production but editing as well, some really good food for thought here… thanks for watching :)
Master at work!
Can we get a sound effect and maybe a graphic every time P says 'filtered chords and bass' pls
@@noahnumberone I think he's on to something @schnoodlevideo
Nice one, Praveen. The one that kills me is G.A.S.. Need to stop it and learn my tools 😫
You and me both! I’m actually trying to use this channel to force me to learn new things and use underused gear more often! 😅 Next week is a Moog Matriarch feature from a woefully underused corner of the studio 😂
Nice one, thank you! Multi-track recording into the computer seems like the way to go
Yeah it helps give you options to arrange later!
i needed this one man
Yo! I'm so happy you found some bits of inspo in this one.
The 808 has the finest cowbell known to mankind. Everyone should use it!
This video def needs more cowbell 😂🙌🏽
Love this idea, going to have to try it out myself!
Awesome! Let me know how it goes. I’m going to have some follow up notes on how to do this with midi / vst instruments in Ableton soon.
How do you break out of the loop? Let me know in the comments! Thanks for watching <3
ye you pronounced it perfectly :)
Phew! 😅😅😅 I love this thing man - amazing work. Really feels like an instrument.
@@BrailleSounds too generous my dear... it's just a box coming from mine most cruel obscure imagination, nothing can go wrong, right?
Inspiring
That’s what I’m here for! 🙏🏽
He looks and reminds me of a producer version of veritasium?
I’ll take it! 😂
Love the video bud, wish we got a chance to collab before I move to Columbus. I wish you the absolute best. You make quality content and are a valuable resource for anyone at any level in this space.
You’re moving!? 🥲 Safe travels and thanks so much for the kind words Frederick! 🙇🏽
Great watch! Question that’s not about this video: How does the Matriarch compare to the Mono/Poly? if they are comparable at all. Just curious.
Hmmmm the mono poly sounds better for bass sounds imo. Voyager > Mono Poly > Matriarch for bass. Matriarch > Voyager > Mono Poly for versatility imo! I’m actually working on a matriarch related video right now and will try and tie in the Mono Poly thanks for the great idea 🙌🏽
glad i found you - instasub!!
Thank you! 🙏
good tips bro
