The M1 Garand doesn't use magazines but 8 round clips as shown. Once round 8 is fired the clip is ejected automatically and another 8 round clip manually replaced , where as mags have to be removed and replaced manually once the last round is fired. Clips are usually loaded from the top of the gun, where as weapons utilizing magazines are designed to have the mag loaded from the bottom, top or side. The mags for this type of weapon can also hold significantly many more rounds than 8 rounds resulting in reloading the weapon less often and providing for automatic weapons to more effective.
