Ever wanted to learn about all things homesteading... Especially, chickens. I'll cover my journey to learn about becoming self-sustaining, canning, cooking, growing all the things.
I'm not perfect or saying I'm an experienced homesteader, just inviting you to join me on my journey. Many videos will cover my chicken obsession and prove that chicken math is a thing.
My chickens right now are Blue & Splash Polish, Silkies bearded, non-bearded and show-girls, Buff-Laced, Gold-Laced and Silver-Laced Polish, Cochin, and Mottled Houdan. I plan to add other breeds as we build.

Great information. Thank you for your research and for sharing. Much appreciated!
Np problem I love helping
will you be offering silver deathlayers at some point?
I hope so.
Excellent information. Thank you
Np I love helping
nice very nice
Thanks
@@ChickensForChicks any time nice family of chiken
Why don’t you get the some straw shavings instead of having them on just rocks!
Wow, you feel strongly... I am working on that, I have 23 coops so it takes time. And they aren't on rock, they are on dirt and sand. Thank you for taking time to share your thoughts
It’s filthy in there!
Thank you so much for taking time out of your day to comment on my farm. NPIP actually wants you to have dirt or cement.
wow they are huge and beautiful
Ya, but it's too cold to put them outside
You are a genius..
Lots of research and trial and fail.
So what kind of seeds are you using...
I'm currently using winter wheat seed. I can get it for $17 for 60 lbs
How are the death layers hatching and where are you located?
They are hatching pretty good now that I have enough roosters. I'm in NW AR
@ChickensForChicks That sounds close, I am close to Van Buren AR.
@childlikefaith7257 ya I've bought things from there.
Están preciosos
Thanks I love all of them
How wonderful! That's a fantastic way to sve money and reduce your worries about feed. Have you had a problem with spoilage or feed going rancid? I've been picking up feed every week when we do the in-town errands (since we're in town anyway, we stop by the feed store and pick up whatever for the next week). It's easier to let them worry about keeping it from spoiling or having problems, and I don't have to worry about pests, weather, or anything. Considering I just hauled a 50lb bag to the shed for this morning's feeding, I understand the wear and tear on the body! It would be easier to have them deliver in bulk, but I worry about it getting damp and molding. I can get by with about 75 lb/week, or less, right now. But I can see that going up over time. I guess it's a trade-off. I can deal with hauling it every week and not worry about quality in storage, but pay in small amounts regularly and do the heavy lifting. Or I can have it delivered and worry about the storage, but not worry about lifting, price, or running out. Bleh.
I don't think that's a major problem. I buy 900# at a time and put them in 55 gallon barrels. As long as the barrels are covered I'm fine. All the big farms around here do it.
I started fermenting my feed about 2 years ago and it's really helped with the flock's health and appetite. Not as much wasted feed! I've been thinkiing about going to mixing my own instead of using processed/bagged feeds. It sounds like sprouting would be a good intermediary step for me while I try to clear space and get the supplies for maybe making my own. It's looking like I'll be growing my flock over the next couple of years because of my plans, longterm, and anything that helps to cut costs while keeping them healthy and happy is a good idea. Thank you! Your feed store lady was right!
I'm so glad I can help. I love giving all the extras to mine. And chicken math hits us all. Lol, I got my first chickens 5-12-22 and look at me now
All your chicks are beautiful
Thanks
Legal cool kkkk
Ya, cuts feed prices
How great that with all those chickens you have, that way you can save money on their feed. Congratulations, well thought out.
Thanks a lot of it is with the support of my husband
No precisa colocar sugar não .pode usar o Kefir
I don't add sugar, only water and some spices to help with their health.
Parabéns eu q inventei isso legal
Thanks
How nice, thanks for sharing and as always I follow you from Puerto Rico. Your videos are great.
I like to update everyone, things change a lot. As I sell chickens I spend the money on my business
how much it cost when buying a pair of C O ?
Sorry it took so long for me to answer... I lost the comment. I have been lucky so far and bought mine for between 30-50 each. BUT they should be more. I'm in an area that chickens are sold for a cheap price. Especially if you're willing to search, network and drive a LONG way.
How long can I keep the feed after the 3 days of fermentation? Does it go bad since it’s wet?
I only do enough food for each day
Is your name deloris lol
No Chris, why?
@ChickensForChicks the book misery by Steven King Deloris is very possessive lol
Great movie too
Sorry, not really a Steven King fan. I have only read a couple of his. Mainly, The Stand
Those boards are to skinny
Thanks for talking time to comment but the girls are doing fine
Remarkable!!! Thanks!
No problem
I got a critter trying to live under my trailer haven't figured out what it is yet but it scares the dog
I have discovered what I'm having problems with. Skunks and groundhogs. The skunk has damn near got me a couple of times. But I haven't gotten rid of them yet.
@@ChickensForChicks if it ever sprays tomato juice is bs use white vinegar then shampoo it out yes I learned from experience I had dog loved to bite and chase them
What you use to make feeds for fermentation?
Whatever feed you are using. If you are using pellets you want to learn how much they will expand when you add water
It really helps increase chicken egg production, ivd tried snd tested it 2 years ago. It really wirks wonder
Ya, it's amazing how much it helps
Do they really lay eggs everyday
No, about 5 a week. But they lay all their lives, somewhere between 10-14 years. They also lay most of the winter
I won't use plastic for my animals or myself. Just saying
We each make our own choices, thanks for commenting
Hypocrite, dont you buy anything in plastics then?
@cinta3805 lmao
The active ingredient is chlorine dioxide. Look for that for your chickens. I'm sure this has other ingredients that are not great for them to drink. Look for chlorine dioxide and Jim Humble
I did discover that.
IWjb2:&!:2!&2:es Uzbekistan
Absolute studs
Ya beautiful
Forg
No, frog 🐸
Spray some coyote pee down there. Get it at feed store
I will have to try that. I got one of the groundhogs. Still hunting the skunks
I just bought four C O babies!
I love my Orpingtons
Beautiful chickens, Brahma, and Cochin are my absolute favorite breeds.
I have a hard time choosing, but I love my Cochins and Orpingtons. They have massive chunky butts and are just too cute
Yo ..are these even proper conditions?? Umm... something Aint right...
Not sure what you mean
Well tomorrow I’m finally gonna get a rooster, he’s a 6 month old Americana. Now I have to figure out what chicken math is. 😂
Nice, well 2 years ago I started with 13 silkies... It'll get you
Chickens need 8-10 sq feet of space if they’re free range and 3-5 sq feet of space in a coop. Ample space helps keep tempers from flaring up.
Thanks for the info
@@ChickensForChicks no problem
How many chickens y’all have?
Over 500
@@ChickensForChicks Holy tomatoes, I only have 8 and two ducks. I don’t recommend ducks.
Do you use yeast or you just mix the feed with water and cover?
Just cover with water and cover loosely with a lid
Are we not going to discuss the war zone you call a yard??
Ummm that would be where my husband's tools are, and him cleaning out areas where women's husband's have died and he was paid to clean out their garages. But thanks for commenting.
Some people look at the gold and some people look at the dirt
K
Thanks
thanks for sharing
Thanks
Your chicks are beautiful
Thanks
It's good to see you again here, there are some of those who like your videos, I follow you from Puerto Rico
That's really cool to have someone from Puerto Rico watching my chickens
Why you fermenting?
Because it almost doubles my egg production. The birds are healthy, and it lowers my feed bill.
@@ChickensForChicks thanks for your quick reply. If you soak the feed for 10, 20 minutes cant you get the same benefits?
@Primerose172 No, you need the 3 days for the fermentation to process the feed. You can just wet the feed. They love that, but you lose out on the major benefits
@@Primerose172 No you don't. The process of fermentation breaks down the feed and makes more of the nutrients available to the chickens
@@ChickensForChicks thanks
How big the last time I saw them they were small
Ya, they grow fast
I love all your chickens
Me too
It was here that your videos were released, you watched two of your videos
Actually these are grown. The videos are ones I took over the first year
They are from Switzerland, not Sweden....great breed! Very hardy and good layers. They are also very alert.
Thanks, my mistake
