Qualitative VAWT Comparison - YinYang-ish and Ugrinski-ish VAWT
Looking at how two turbine behave when exposed to the wind. One is similar to the Yin Yang VAWT from a previous video, and the other is similar to a Ugrinski VAWT. I wanted to see how well a turbine would spin with just the center portion of the Ugrinski only opened up for more air flow. And then added scooped out sides, but no curl like the Ugrinski. It looked a bit like a curvy Miller rotor, so I called it a Millerinski VAWT.

Yin Yang VAWT revA
Просмотров 86818 дней назад
I made a Yin Yang VAWT with straight wings and a slightly larger diameter. It has difficulty starting but does well once it gets going. Next I want to try putting an offset of 90 degrees between the lower and upper halves to help with starting. I also have to install the coil (200 turns of 32 AWG magnet wire) and check its performance.

Micro Sharp VAWT in Good Wind
Просмотров 3832 месяца назад
A collection of video clips taken in a good wind of around 5 to 7 m/s. The output of the motor/generator was fed to a three phase rectifier and then to a green LED. The LED would barely glow at times giving a rough indication of the voltage being generated. The BLDC motor is rated for a higher speed and is perhaps not best suited for this application. However, it does generate electricity. The ...

We had some sustained high winds today. And by that I mean the wind was over 3 m/s for over 3 seconds. Here is a little video of the event.
Bird Wing VAWT

This is a proof of concept model for getting power from a Sharp Bird Wing. I think it would work, but at the time of this video the wind was poor. Also, it needs better string. Small Sharp VAWT update

The tip speed ratio for the small Sharp VAWT just wasn't quite high enough to produce power with the generator that was designed for the smaller diameter 3D printed VAWT. So I put the generator back on the 3D printed VAWT and mounted it on the pole where the Chinese lantern VAWT used to be. It looks happy there.
Modified Small Sharp VAWT

I moved the pivot point to emphasize aerodynamic forces and diminish inertial forces because it did not appear as if the wings were moving like they should. This is just a short video to provide a look at how it moves now.

Was wondering if you have tried a hybrid mppt wind controller with boost control it maybe able to help
That is what the VAWT came with. It did not seem to work very well. Unless the boost part of it was not functioning.
It was really fascinating! But could you have mentioned what the wind speed was at that moment?
Sadly, I forgot my anemometer and we were hours away from home.
Дуже цікава конструкція. Масштабування та збільшення кількості крил до 6-8 створить всередині турбіни вихрову структуру. Напрям сили Коріоліса я враховую.
Michael with your tech skills how hard would it to have a load on that pole you hold up so you'd have instant feedback on power :-)
That might be a good project down the road. Right now, I am just waiting on parts for a better VAWT. ;-)
If you could delete the bearing housing it would go very fast. More air should go through
That is on the to-do list. :-)
Interested in your project. How much it is actually generating?
I haven't tried measuring the power yet. I didn't want to drag a bunch of electronics out to the beach. And we haven't had wind by our house all summer.
Was that wye or delta stator?
I don't know. I'm guessing a wye, but I don't know how to check for that.
@@MickEMaus3000 I think wye has 4 connections and delta 3. But maybe it has 3 wires and a case/chassis connection which would make it wye.
Spinning means nothing unless you show us the production, it may just glow a led
I'll bet a few holes would get it started. Or, turn it into a siren.😂
put some lift wings on it then it'll turn Hahahaha
👍
throw it away and get a horizontal axis M3 or SM3 for your purposes. as of the panel - it's tiny... it won't generate a lot ) if you want some serious power - go get a normal 400watts panel, that will be even cheaper.
Why did you place the pivot point where it requires a counter balance? Could the pivot point be placed in the balance point of the wing (rather than the forward end) in order to eliminate or reduce the counter balance?
That is definitely something worth looking into. Moving the pivot point away from the center of mass of the wing helps give the aerodynamic forces more leverage, but it increases the inertia of the whole assembly. Moving it closer would lighten things up, but might not give the aerodynamic forces enough leverage to fight against the inertial forces. But the optimal point may be different than what I've got. I just modeled it after the design in the patent.
He shared very detailed information about making wind turbines very well.
The wind is strong and it seems to be a bit shaky.
Definitely too large for that pole. I have since taken it down and am working on a smaller, more appropriately sized VAWT.
I am considering a vertical axis wind turbine that looks exactly like a tree, I call it : e-tree, the trunk of the e-tree is brown, the spinning blades are green, attached to the trunk of the e-tree are features of : wifi/mobile network, light and power outlet, to charge a car for example
Sounds really neat! I look forward to a video about it.
I truly appreciate your documentation effort here. Very well explained. Thank you
Run the center post all the way to the top as an elliptical cone. Keep the top open to vent capture air upwards. Build your outer wings thick at bottom and as they get closer to top decrease thickness. This creates air flow gradient bottom to top.
The wings you use should be bigger. Also, bldc motor is good for high speed energy production. You should use something like a stepper motor instead :) I liked the modularity of the parts.
Just yesterday we had 15 mph winds. Wish I had a turbine up.
@@justtinkering6713 I wish :) We would like to see your situation too
The motor they are using here is a gimbal motor so it is a low kv motor. It's a good choice. I use the exact same motors in my wind tunnel testing.
@@hellothisismax Interesting. So how is the efficiency?
@@mustafadut8430 I have no idea how efficient these motors are, I've never tried to measure it.
Overhead shot is cool. Carbon fiber doing it's job.
I like this. Do you have a STL so I can print and test here in Scotland. Im testing Douglas Murray-Smiths portable HAWT at the mo.
I just put a link in the description. There is no coil holder designed for this; it's just the turbine and mount.
Thank you very much for your kindness.
I wish I could test my turbines at Lake Michigan. Eh boy.
the math magician at work again :-0
Hello Michael!, your video is very instructive, can I share it on my social media, I will quote your video link and write your signature on the first line. I am a researcher from China on VAWT. Looking forward to your reply!
Sure.

Hello blogger, I am very interested in your video, I have been studying VAWT, I am from CHINA, recently China's VAWT market is very chaotic, your video is very representative, may I forward your work to my social media, I will mark your source and the link to the original video!😄
I'd like to see that software on a three bladed yin yang. Wish they had that software for android.
Hello! Do you have the measurements and design of this wind turbine that you can send me?
I just posted it on Thingiverse. www.thingiverse.com/thing:6717893
Is there a SCIENTIFIC number for that modest wind? LOL I don't see any bending of the blades at all. Looking good, I don't care what PAS says.
That CF rod must be doing its job.
Looking good
At the risk of sounding uneducated......what is this for? Thank you in advance for your further input to my education.
It is just demonstrating an idea. I wanted to see if the bird wing idea would turn a stepper motor. We didn't have much wind, but it did manage to move the motor shaft.
@@MickEMaus3000 Thank you for the prompt response. I just watched the other video you put the link to. I have a better understanding of the concept. I am not knowledgeable in the "Bird wing" concept but I do have one thought/recommendation to transfer more motion to the stepper motor. I think if you decrease the distance from the bottom of the wing to the stepper if would transfer the motion more efficiently. The stepper would also serve as a more controlled "pivot" point. I am in no way trying to act like I know anything about this. It is truly an interesting concept. Good luck I look forward to seeing how it progresses. (new subscriber gained)
its a good example of how silicon alley platforms work... I have literal scientific discoveries and inventions but because im jamaican and dont support the grecoroman agenda they dont even show my vids to my subs... hes got twice as many views as subs in 2 days... Ive got 3/4 of my subs arent even shown my vids 2 years later.. when they do its not counted. ie.. 28 subs in the month... but on only 3 subs in the last 90 days.. they dont even count my subs or my views and they hide my vids.. even tho its actual science.. theyve already had their AI fake garbage stealin my voice n cadence... all they do is promote stuff that makes Them look better... then THIEF EVERYTHING sellable and claim they invented it. Most tech from the phone to CD/DVD to lithography for wafer fab to cellular tech the cartidge video game system were actually invented by black people... all stolen.. like my stuff
Does it make any power???...........Z
I'm sure it would if it had a generator. I intended to drive an air pump with it, but took it down because it was much too large for that pole.
LOL, It looks so lonely 😂
I had to walk away from it. When I watch it, it just sits there. You will notice that it watched me go into the shed, and when it thought I wasn't looking, it started to move. But I tricked it with a camera on a tripod. :-)
Yep, it’s a cheeky bugger alright!you can definitely see a change in its behaviour when it thought you were out of in of sight and had no clue what it was up to. I think it broke the string on purpose though.
Could you smooth out the wings by using a flame? Would it work better if they were?
I'd be too worried about destroying them. :-)
I’m guessing you used PLA, if so heat is definitely a bad idea! I’m would suggest a smaller layer height. say .10mm. Could also try printing the blades on their ends in one piece. I would use a good size raft to reduce the risk of the blade falling over mid print.
take at least half of them off 🙂It gets turned into a solid tube too fast
There's more going on inside than we think. Maybe increase the diameter a little, to open it up more.
I'd like to see an overhead, slow motion, HD video, so we can see the pitching action.
I'll give it a try. I'm hoping to take it to the beach this weekend for better wind. The forecast calls for single digit winds for the next week.
If you look at the right side of the turbine, the metal hardware sticks out a bit more as it speeds up. So there must be some pitching action going on.
Nice to see such Innovation.!
Please share wind speed VS rpm of air foil rotor if you have in your record
I did not record that data.
I am waiting for your reply please
I'm sorry, I do not see a comment to reply to. (Other than this one)

Good Demo by you 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
Wing chord is 1.80 meter or 180 meter which one is correct ? Please, 180 meter is not possible, written in descritipion or statement?
Thank you for pointing out the typo! It is supposed to be 180 mm. The correction is now noted in the description.
Great design. I like the articulated mount point. I am incorporating into my current design. Thank you for your hard work.
Alternators are 110 AC. They have rectifiers built into them to make them 12VDC. If you run that out and rectify it back to 110. You are wasting time. Just pull the rectifier modules off the alternator and it will be 110AC when spun at the right RPMs it will be 60 Htz. Why mike out the shaft? were you putting a different drive system on it. Check the threads bud. Thats the main thing. Its probably metric.
This is a modified alternator with neo magnets and custom coils, so the voltage is probably not standard for an alternator. I had the nut already, so I didn't need to know the thread. I just wanted to know the diameter to make sure whatever pulley I got was compatible.
And all they want to install it in US, where people with money and market already full, while place for self-promotion in Ukraine where people have no money right now. Later they will whining about their startups provide nothing while idea was great.
Lmao. What a moron
