These Countries are Sending Refugees to Prison
The Nauru Australian Immigration Detention Center is Australia's dirty little secret. This is a secret prison, and it’s where Australia sends it migrants for processing. Anyone who is intercepted by boat traveling to Australia to claim asylum is sent here. Their asylum claims aren’t processed on the mainland, instead they are sent to this far flung island nation that has been paid off by the Australian government. And this isn’t the only deal they made.
Australia has another refugee prison on Christmas Island, and once had another on the island of Manus. This is what Australian policymakers have referred to as “the Pacific Solution”; their way of dealing with refugees without taking respo...

Why Tokyo has Tons of Affordable Housing but America Doesn't
Просмотров 128 тыс.2 года назад
Why is the cost of living in Tokyo so stable? Rent for an average apartment in the biggest city in the world has barely risen 20% over the last 15 years. How is a city that is still growing in population able to keep the price of housing so low when compared to other large international cities like New York and London? When you consider how much land is available in Japan vs the United States, ...
How US Drone Strikes Killed Civilians in Secret
Просмотров 2,2 тыс.2 года назад
There is no reliable government data on drone strikes. And the US government seems to prefer it that way. Drone strikes and coalition aircraft guided by drones quickly became the preferred tool in the war on terror. And for political leaders who didn’t want to put troops on the ground, they were a huge benefit. This was sold to the American public as “the most precise air campaign in history,” ...
Why the Wagner Group Mercenaries are Terrorizing Africa
Просмотров 3,1 тыс.2 года назад
What exactly is the Wagner Group? Sometimes referred to as "Putin's Private Army," these shady mercenaries first appeared in the Donbas region in 2014 following the annexation of Crimea, and since then have popped up in conflicts around the globe from Syria, to Libya, to the Central African Republic. Recently, the Wagner Group has appeared across Africa, propping up military regimes, and terror...
The US is Losing a Secret War in Somalia
Просмотров 3,1 тыс.2 года назад
The US has been fighting a covert war in East Africa for over 16 years. This includes troops on the ground conducting operations, training of militia groups, air raids, and yes, drone strikes, all in the name of fighting a militant islamic terrorist organization named Al Shabaab. But critics say that the history of US policy in Somalia is riddled with missteps that have weakened the state and s...
How Reagan Caused the Student Debt Crisis

There was a time in the United States when public university was virtually tuition free. Where the federal and state governments funded public universities and considered accessible higher education to be a state asset. But like many other things in the United States, a major political shift changed that dramatically. And if I’ve learned anything in my time as a public policy researcher, if som...

What Will Climate Migration Look Like?
Просмотров 6963 года назад
In the 1930s, hundreds of thousands of people fled the mid west amid one of the greatest man made climate disasters we've ever seen. What can we learn from this episode of American history about worsening climate migration and and what policies should governments be pursuing to prepare for it? If we assume that wide scale migration is now an inevitability, are we ready for that new reality? Are...
Why LA Sucks. It's Short.

The US Invaded Haiti to Stop a US Backed Coup

This is indeed by design. They guarantee crushing student loan debt for a portion of those who go to college. This guarantee is designed by removing bankruptcy rights in exchange for the false promise of settling the debts after 10, 20 or 25 years of income base repayments. It's like a sticky trap for rodents. The rodent spends its whole life stuck, trying everything it can to wiggle free. Except peasants are the ones in the sticky trap. Keeping a portion of the peasants in perpetual economic ruin makes sure there's always a pool of workers who are insecure and too afraid to form unions or demand better conditions. Those who don't have student loan debt (And have the confidence to demand better terms of employment) can always be replaced by insecure workers who do have student loan debt. This is just one way we keep all workers divided and squabbling against each other so that the people on top can keep going to the bank.

When Regan came into office there was a change in society... He ushered in blaming unions and being anti worker. You were not a person of merit unless you made it to management. Staggering wages while giving tax cuts for the rich. He was responsible for union busting. Ending free school lunches for public schools. Moving federal college loans to banks which is why we have a nearly 2 trillion dollar debtin college tuition. Regan is the reason why only 10% of Americans can participate in the American economy - pre Regan days it was at 70%. He represented the generation who hated fdr.

I would be the first to say that no presidency is perfect, but you have to make some serious omissions if you are going to compare the policies Reagan implemented with the respect to higher education. Did he suggest the government back the student loans? Nope. However, when universities are guaranteed government backed loans, what incentive do they have to not charge tuition above the rate of inflation. That was the cause of more government intervention that he didn’t believe in

2018 US sends Blackwater/Academi mercenaries to Haiti during the Petro Caribe protests to "steal $80 million". The US blocked off massive oil shipments from Venezuela to Haiti courtesy of Maduro. Of course, mainstream media never tells anyone Haiti wasnt out of oil and actually has larger oil reserves than Venezuela and Saudi Arabia combined. Meanwhile, CIA controlled "news" outlets like Vice were implying the Prime Minister would try to assassinate him. Since the US invasion in 1915 the US Aelects Haiti's presidents through a council of nations and assassinates them when they don't acts as pawns. In 2021, the US hired those Colombian mercenaries through a Miami based mercenary company. (US has been training Colombian mercenaries since the 1950's btw. They had 2 Haitians come accompany them as translators. They completed their mission but failed to get extracted. The "news" outlets made it out to seem like either they were rouge mercenaries, Colombias government had somehow ordered it, or the Haitians living in the US had plotted to have him assassinated and have one of them be president 🤦🏾 Now they are currently trying to frame Jovenels wife for the assassination since they don't want her revealing the truth.

There is some relevant citizen involvement in city planning in Japan thou. There are workshops, prototypes presented to citizens, and so on. There are also cities where keeping traditional streetscapes are a big thing, but still rent is affordable. In fact, the more integrated citizens are, the less the government needs to overdo populistic restrictions. And overall Japanese cities have less restrictions than many western cities. Of course less regulations also cause problems, but are overall cheaper, so there is a balance of regulated enough and affordable enough that can only be achieved by correctly identifying priorities involving strategic combination of top down and bottom up approaches. Note that Nimbys once triggered become increasingly defensive, asking too late is always complicated, but planners who now their city and people, can plan more flexible, all cities have sensitive spots planners need to know well.

Reagan deregulated everything. He deregulated the airlines. Now we have crap for airline service. He deregulated trucking. So that there were a bunch of smaller trucking companies that lost to the bigger trucking companies. Leaving us with fewer choices to ship things. He was lax on anti-trust laws. So the 80’s became the age of mergers. Where everyone bought out the competition. It’s how we have like 3 major corporations that own every major industry. Competition is stifled. We lose the freedom of choice. As much as I like the idea of deregulation on paper. It sounds like the ultimate free market to have the least government involvement. But the reality is that a pure free market results in monopolies like we had at the turn of the 20th century. Government is needed to regulate the economy to help maintain a fair market. That sounds very socialist when I hear that. I believe there should be a healthy amount of regulation but who determines what’s a healthy amount? That’s the struggle. Conservatives in the 80’s really pushed hard at slashing funding for so many things. The one I know of is mental hospitals. Most were funding by the states. Is it any wonder why we have so much of a mental health crisis? He cut funding to universities. Which… I don’t have a problem with. We have too much of an over educated population with no skills that are desperately needed. The higher education became its own industrial complex. Convince a generation to go to college and find something you love. So we have degrees in underwater basket weaving and liberal arts. Not having counselors and advisors stepping in to advise students in what they should and should not pursue.
