I've always had a vision about a really good proper smash bros storyline revolving around Dr Eggman dangerously ripping holes in the multiverse using the power of Zero from Kirby (who be the true final boss) and this would be a great theme for a boss part way through where Mario has a skirmish with Eggman who is using stolen upgraded tech from Mario's own universe i.e Digga-Egg or Egg-Leg and it would be digga-leg but with a giant metal moustache and instead of a star it would be eggmans cockpit
Honestly, Subspce emissary was awesome, a damn shame they chose to throw the concept out the window in later entries, and even though Ultimate's story mode does exist, it's really underwhelming, I think I can also picture what you're going for with this, but at the same time I doubt eggman would see potential in the mario verse tech, and the whole of dark matter would likely outright murder him if they saw him anywhere near, so zero falling under eggman's (false) control seems really difficult, but again, I can see an interesting concept here, keep thinking it, I'm sure you can bring something awesome out of this. Man that was hell of a rant, sorry everyone who might read this
