Small detail missing: Nazo had his right hand ON the Master emerald in the animation/animatic. Mecha Sonic (and thus Nazo by proxy of having some of Mecha's parts installed) needed direct contact in order to absorb the energy and charge up.
yeah true but if I put Nazo's hand on the master emerald then his wrist ring would clip through his hand, so I resorted to having his quill touch the master emerald instead

With Chakra-X uploading the act 2 yesterday it made me want to get back to make animations and I want to try to make all of Wrath of Nazo in 3D (even if I'm not that good lol) !
