Let’s Play The Goldilocks Game! THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY by Genesis
kiss me kiss me kiss me, bloodflowers, songs of a lost world, wish, disintegration. That's tough, man!
Gotta say, for me, as an older fan, this really is a timely masterpiece. The band’s work feels orchestral, sweeping, & perfectly underscores Robert Smith’s reflections on aging in the world, the passing of time, & death. This is dramatic musical poetry at its finest, the songs transporting us to personal yet universal stations, where RS has arrived only to find he has more questions now than answers. I can sense his confusion, some fear, & regret which most of us experience as we age, and mortality draws that much closer. It’s a beautifully produced, deeply serious, moving work of art. What an accomplishment! So grateful to be living during their time 👏👏👏
Top Cure Kiss me kiss me kiss me Disinegration Wish Head on the door Pornography Not sure about where the new album ranks yet The cure is the most influential band of the 80s. Only other in the running is U2.
He maybe be 65 but their music sounds better that most of today's music. Sounds fresher than ever and his voice is still at its peak.
I never can say goodbye,a fragile thing and All I ever am are my favorites but honestly the album is strong beginning to end. It was a great idea to keep it at 8 songs. Any longer it would have gotten monotonous. Because its about 50 minutes it's easy to consume all in one listen. A great return to form. 4 out of 5 Fyi in a interview Robert said not to worry that they have a handful of their classic jangle pop tunes awaiting release.
The Tweeter lol! Wild I was at that Bloodflowers that same show in Camden NJ. I sat in a TD Bank box. I'm 59 a life long fan. I've seen every tour since the mid 80s including the most recent one here in Philly a year or so ago. If you get a chance to see them again don't miss it. It was a amazing 3 hour concert.
I have a friend who tells me my songs (Space Engineer, To Be Loved, Burned) are “too melancholic “) This album is a bummer. A fragile thing is my favourite. You guys are great, good energy. Subscribed. I’m 63, can relate to the modern world, music not being relatable.
Songs of a Lost World is better than Disintegration. Top 3 Cure albums are SOALW, Faith and Wish. Bloodflowers is only better than The Cure and Wild Mood Swings. 🙌
Best 3 songs on the album for me are Endsong, I Can Never Say Goodbye and Warsong. My least favourite were A Fragile Thing and Drone:No Drone
Disintegration is ABSOLUTELY a masterpiece. To not mention that is ridiculous. That and Dark side of the moon are two of the best rock albums ever made. Period, full stop.
Every person has a different opinion. I don’t like that album, at all. The spider man is having me for dinner tonight, for a start is childish and immature, especially for a man of 36 to write…
@@spaceengineer1452are you kidding me? Do you know what the song “Lullaby” is about?! It’s a nightmare with a sense of humour
@@hw343434 No, Im not kidding. Every, single person has an opinion. Those lyrics are embaressing.
Disintegration is a bonafide masterpiece and Pornography is specifically a Goth masterpiece
Drone:No Drone was my least favorite and remains such after several listens....the musicianship...the drumming is the best!!! Jason Coopers finest especially since so many fans have been tough on him since he replaced Boris Williams. Robert's guitar work and his solos!!!! Reeves' guitar work is just an awkward fit for The Cure.
How can you be sure which is Robert’s guitar work and which is Reeves’s? Everyone praised Porl Thompson for his guitar work on Wish but, according to Robert, Porl hardly played on the album.
Ross Robinson produced The Cure 2004 the one before 4:13 Dream.
Hey just came across you both. I'm about your age, well, I'm 1973' but I've been a Cure fan since the mid/late 80s. It's endearing to me you talk of Bloodflowers time, as your direct introduction to this band. I saw them live in 1992 on their Wish tour, in Sydney. So, I'm a massive fan and waited anxiously for this. I really love this album but it's too short for me. It's powerful though. On other worldly levels. I'm glad you both praise the music, the lyrics and vocals. His age and personal life really come to the fore. I agree Warsong could've been a few minutes longer to heighten it's impact. It's great album overall for me, and Disintegration is their masterpiece btw
Major thanks for the shout-out about (unintended Canadian joke there) The Tragically Hip. A band i'd never checked out. I'm from Northern Ireland, so it's hard to get physical copies of their music. But i have been streaming their early stuff and the best of alot this week. Excellent band. I also watched the Amazon Prime new 4 part documentary about them. Highly recommend that. I'm sure you guys are also really happy about RA announcing the forthcoming release of Black Hole. Ive been enjoying his roughly weekly covers digital releases, too. Thanks, Stuart
So recently I went to 4 live shows in the Los Angeles area. 3 were Pulp, Paul Weller, PJ Harvey, all were very good. The 4th, I was not familiar with his catalogue, basically went last minute, and was the best show of the lot. Of course was Glen Hansard. Killer live, will try to see every time they play in the area now. This show had Eddie Vedder's daughter sing "My fathers daughter" with the band (she was great), and a member of the Pogues join for some songs, 2 of them Pogue songs (including a pair of brown eyes). I have since been going down the wormhole of Glen's catalogue. By the way theres an interesting, and sad story about how Eddie Vedder first met (or reached out to) Glen.
I will give some of this stuff a listen! Speaking of R.E.M., I have loved the series and am looking forward to the New Adventures in Hi-Fi video! Now that you fellas are back in the swing of things on the channel, will the chronological album videos resume?
We will definitely get back on that horse soon :)
1st listen to Cutouts, and I thought some of the songs were too frenetic and and 80s mellotron heavy (Foreign Spies reminded me of some 80s sci fi soundtrack). But on repeated listens it has really grown on me; really love Instant Psalm, Zero Sum, Colours Fly, Don't get me started and Tiptoe (so beautiful). Having said that, I feel like Wall of Eyes is the best of the 3 released. Teleharmonic, Read the Room, I Quit, You Know Me, and maybe the best song by The Smile, Bending Hectic, are brilliant songs.
I'm sad to say I've never really listened to the Tragically Hip, but after watching your lists I decided to start ... thanks! Where did you see Pearl Jam? My son and I saw them last month in Baltimore and it was FANTASTIC! We both liked Glen Hansard as the opener, and I thought his acoustic duet with Eddie was really powerful. I need to give him a good listen too! What do you guys think of the new Cure songs? I'm completely obsessed with both, especially "Alone". It's like I need to listen to it several times a day to get my fix. Brilliant songs, and I can't wait for the new album to drop!!!
I seen Pearl Jam in Philly so it must have been within a week of when you seen them :). Hope your loving the Hip like have been. And oh we will definitely be talking about The Cure when that album comes out. Like you I have loved the singles.
It seems like some singers are able to adapt and change the way they sing to protect their voice. Brian in AC/DC has sounded GREAT on the last 2 albums because he changed his vocal approach. I'm guessing Ed has done something similar
The hardest thing about ranking REM albums is having a bottom 5. I’d feel like I’m doing the dirty on them, but for a long time I’ve always thought Green is the weakest. New Adventures In Hi Fi is number 1 for me too. The rest of the top five will consist of Monster, Automatic For The People, Murmur and Document. I’ll have to think far too much to rank numbers 6 to 14. Maybe one day I’ll get around to doing it. Great video, gentlemen. 😎
Hey, good to see you guys back! Wall of Eyes is my fav album of '24 so far. I played it nearly every night for about 6-8 weeks and was pretty obsessed with it. It just flows so well together, and there's not a weak moment on it, imo. Cutouts is great too, but I'm not sure it's going to reach the same level. But who knows, given time. I can't see a Radiohead reunion happening for at least 6 months, if not a year. As far as I know, Ed O'brien has been working on a new album, and Colin is touring with Nick Cave. And obviously, The Smile have to promote Cutouts. Yeah, a new RH album would be awesome, but I'm very happy with The Smile in the meantime! Thanks, Stuart
I agree with you ... Wall of Eyes start to finish is wonderful.
Welcome back! Did you get to see Ryan Adams on his solo tour? I saw him at Cadogan Hall, London recently and he was fantastic! By the way, check out a Dutch band called Daryll-Ann. They are a guitar band playing 60s and 70s influenced songs but singing in English. Their harmonies are superb. They’ve just released a new album after a 20 year break. It’s called “Spring”. Previous albums include the wonderful “Weeps” and “Happy Traum”
I was given 2 free tickets to see Coldplay at Wembley Stadium, London in 2022. I almost asked for a refund! 😅 To be fair, they were reasonably entertaining although extremely gimmicky. I only really liked the first 2 albums. Chris Martin is a nice guy but sometimes quite insufferable!
Firstly just bumped into your channel the other day regarding RA albums. Very much appreciate your insights and banter. Anyway ...to Coldplay...yes first album beautiful...came out of the late 90s post Radiohead thing...Starsailor, Turin Brakes, Doves, Muse (maybe) were amongst those who had a chance then too. The future looked bright. But....with every subsequent Coldplay album the pickings were slimmer ...and a descent in radio friendly pop was occurring. Although CMs voice records well and is pretty, I could never see him singing in stadiums. Some of the early Glastonbury vocal performances were weak. But advances in techology carry him along a bit now. They were handpicked and that he is no vocal rock god is of no concern to the system. You can literally sell anything to recent "music" lovers. As one wise man said....sign on the line with a major label and you become a covers band...covering the staff writers' ideas and having it all produced the way the staff producer/CEO wants it. They were identified to go forward...and now, as you say, theyve been punting "agendas". The music industry at that level is just an agenda manufacturing plant. Powerful messages imprinted on the youth. All styles and all bases are covered now. Whatever music you like you get the agendas it drummed in. Drummed in is key because the simpler the music the more effective the imprint You are quite kind to the album in parts. I could find almost no redeeming aspects!! Perhaps the title track was ok... The complete decline in popular music is now complete....by design of course. The degradation of all art forms being the overall agenda for years now. Anyway, I'll lighten up and look fwd to your next cheerful offering. Cheers for now.
I agree! I felt hopeful with the first song too, but I was sadly disappointed. I was kinda hoping for a more earthy feel to the album given the name. It’s not the worst album in the world but it’s also not very memorable in my opinion.
Brad & Keith, has your opinion/ranking of the four albums Ryan Adams released in January changed throughout the year?
I’m guessing you, guy in black, were told “hey, take a listen to this album. It’s bluesy, you might like it”. So you went in comparing it to std blues. If you go in “blank” and listen to it for what it is, you might have a different view. They actually have their music in a couple tv commercials, Sleeping with Lions was used in TNT Animal Kingdom and ESPN X Games. So they take a little different approach to marketing. I’ve seen them twice and really enjoy the music. Bought a signed vinyl too and chatted with them for a second.
I thought I found everything related to Kevin, apparently not. Could you share where you found that live clip at?
"In real time" What does that even mean? In fake time? is that such a thing. If something is done "in real time" a four year old can figure out that it is "in real time."

Fables LRP Reckoning Document Murmur Out of Time
Reading these comments and the wildly different rankings just shows how good R.E.M were. For me.....they changed my taste in music in the mid-80s, I lived in very rural Scotland and listened to a diet of heavy rock. A friend's older sister was listening to Reckoning and it just grabbed my ears and shook them and sent me down a listening path that's stuck with me to this day. For what it's worth my top 5 : 1) Life's Rich Pageant 2) Reckoning 3) Document 4) Murmur 5) New Adventures in Hi Fi
Round Here was the soundtrack to my life back when I was 22...I couldn't possibly be the only one. This may be my favorite album of all time.
You’re right about Wednesdays. That album is stunning and powerful.
I’m new to Eels have just bought Electro Shock Blues and may well get Extreme Witchcraft or the latest one next. E just seems such a cool guy too!! Thanks for the review! 👍🏻😀
Been watching all these Discnology videos in my most recent run through of the R.E.M. discography. Love these videos and love to hear your in depth analysis on each track. The only question I have is where’s New Adventures? I’d love to hear what you guys are going to say about it.
Absolutely fantastic debut!! 👍🏻😎
Man this is tough.. been on a big R.E.M. kick lately so I’ll give you my top 5 as of today (subject to change, but I do prefer the IRS years thru Bill Berry’s departure the most): 1) Document 2) Automatic For The People 3) Lifes Rich Pageant 4) Reckoning 5) Fables Of The Reconstruction (“Driver 8” might be my favorite song from them of all time, I just never get sick of it.. that bridge is so awesome 😮)
They have 5 albums I consider all time greats... just not separated enough to rank 1-5. I'd have to do a tier. Top tier in no particular order: Ten, Vs, Vitalogy, Yield, Binaural. 6. No Code, 7. Pearl Jam, 8. Riot Act, 9.Gigaton, 10. Dark Matter, 11. Lightning Bolt, 12. Backspacer. DM and LB are basically tied for me, BS is easily my least favorite.
Hi, this video was suggested for me almost two years after you guys published it. Even though I’m from Sweden, Counting Crows is my favourite band and here's my list from bottom to top. In advance if I do something wrong grammatically you know why. So here we go: 7) Underwater Sunshine - Sorry but I’m not a real big fan of cover albums and therefore it is on tha last position. I don’t understand why they didn’t put Someday I Will Treat You Good if they’re going to do a cover album. 6) Somewhere Under Wonderland - A little bit of disappointment when it was released. Of these nine songs there are too many that just don’t talk to me. Favourite songs of this album (Earthquake Driver, Possibility Days and God Of Ocean Tides) 5) Hard Candy - Overall a good album but comparing to the other ones I cant’t rank this higher. Same problem as Somwhere Under Wonderland, there are a couple of songs that bring this one down. Favourite songs on this album (Good Time, Hard Candy and Miami) And now it’s going to be real tough for me to rank the four others…… 4) Recovering The Satellites - I know that there will be people who will disagree with me now and I hate myself a little for doing this because it’s a fantastic album with (Recovering The Satellites, Angel Of The Silences and Goodnight Elisabeth) and for being a second album it’s fucking awesome. But there top three albums are talking to me more. 3) Saturday Nights And Sunday Mornings - This is their most underrated album. This one doesn’t get enough recognition and is grossly underrated. The pure anger in Insignificant and Cowboys (most underrated Counting Crows song ever?) mixed up with the powerful feeling of failing to get better in On Almost Any Sunday Morning and ending the album knowing that Adam’s band members always be there for him in Come Around. Some part of me want to put this album as number one, but I can’t and I also love the cover of the album. A rainy day, a grey day I kind of like those ones. 2) This Desert Life - This is in some way my favourite album, but it can’t top their debut album. Love the cover, love all the songs except from Hanginaround which I think is ok but not more. Pick three favourite songs of this album, it’s almost impossible but with a gun against my head I would say…. (Speedway, Amy Hit The Atmosphere and I Wish I Was A Girl) and I hate myself for not mention Mrs. Potter, High Life, Colorblind and so on…… 1) August And Everything After - Nothing can top this album. It’s just perfection. Every single song. I can listen to this over and over again without getting tired of it. Rain King is my favourite song of all time with CC but it’s not the best one. The two best song in my opinion with CC are Round Here and The Tall Grass but back to AAEA - Anna Begins so beautiful, the first verse in Time And Time Again, Ghost Train singing How do you do she said - and I can feel it inside of me. I can go on and on but this album is so fucking great and for being a debut album I’m kind of speechless. Hope that you enjoyed my short review, it can be much longer if I want to…. Have a nice weekend
I've always been a big Eels fan, I have most of his albums. He can be hard to keep up with though, lol. I loved the debut album, and Electro Shock Blues meant alot to me when I was younger, and still does. I have his autobiography and need to sit down and read it as I've heard from so many it's great. Random fact, he has a cameo part at the start of Ant-man Quantumania due to his father being the creator of the multiverse theory (as you mention). It's probably the best thing about that film, lol. Stuart
No clue about the antman movie. That’s so fascinating and awesome
