My girlfriend's 2007 Escape is doing the same thing. Did you ever manage to track down what the problem was? We're thinking it might be the clock spring, but she doesn't have any of the electrical symptoms that are typically associated with clock spring failure.

I have the same issue as well was wondering if you have figured out what it was mine happens when driving not when parked and doesn’t happen all the time. Let me know if you got it fixed and what it was if you could the sound is so annoying
