Cuenca Day Trip | Hiking Laguna Llaviucu, Hosteria Dos Chorreras
A fun day-trip from Cuenca is Laguna Llaviucu. Located in the Cajas National Park, it’s just 12 miles from Cuenca. You can spend the day or even just the afternoon enjoying easy hiking and nature. It’s one of our favorite locations in Ecuador, and one of the last places our full Explore Ecuador crew visited with our guests from the US, pre-pandemic. We’re still looking forward to when we can all be together again!
While a bus can get you near the two-mile cobblestone access road we recommend using transportation that can take you all the way to the parking area.
Entry to park is free, but you will need to provide your passport number or cedula number. The entry gates close at 4:00 PM.

Three years later, I just discovered this video as we prepare to move to Ecuador for six months. Tiestos looks insane (in the best of ways). This was gorgeous, and a sensory experience. I work in wine prodution and service, and loved the connections and interactions among flavors that Jefe Juan Carlos created. We are so excited to visit Tiestos when we spend time in Cuenca in 2023!

Most of this video, and all of the restaurant footage was shot pre-pandemic. While Ecuador may relax mask rules soon, they are still required in restaurants, indoors, crowds, etc.

So this was pre-pandemic right...excellent video..I found out that there are a heap of ex-Pat's now living in Cuenca.....I may go after the pandemic decreases.
Yes, most of the footage was pre-pandemic. Although we went recently and took drone footage in the park and there weren’t any other people in sight. It’s just a beautiful as ever. There are an estimated 5,000-12,000 expats living in Cuenca from all over the world (not just North Americans.) The range I listed is broad because there is always someone moving back to their home country or to a different country. And there is always more people moving here. It’s constantly in flux. It’s hard to get an accurate count! We’ve lived in Cuenca nearly 7 years and love it here.

How much a day trip cost? Beautiful!!
There is no fee required to enter the park. Transportation is the only thing with a cost. If you have a car, it just the cost of the gas. You can take the bus and get off near the highway entrance. You can ride with a friend, or take a taxi, or hire a driver to drop you off, pick you up.

Nice town, maybe a little too sedate for me. I’m used to the hassle and bustle of 42nd St. in Manhattan, the loud squeaky sound of the subways as they approach the station. I would like to visit there one day, though, but by all appearances it doesn’t seem like it’ll be anytime soon. Nice video.
