Bestselling author Frank Schaeffer offers a passionate political, social, and lifestyle “blueprint” for changes millions of us know are needed to rebalance our work lives with thriving relationships: Fall in Love, Have Children, Stay Put, Save the Planet, Be Happy. Even before everything was disrupted by COVID-19 (not to mention by Trump), millions of Americans were already questioning capitalism’s “values.” We were already challenging the idea that your job defines you. We already knew something was wrong. Loneliness, frustration, and alienation were already on the rise. Even the most successful of us felt too busy, too preoccupied, and too distracted to enjoy what we intuitively know are life’s greatest rewards: vibrant relationships, family life, connection to others, involvement in our community, and the thrilling experience of love.
Duty to Win: Dear Democrats…
Dear Democrats,
Trump has shown a willingness to smash all our American traditions, junk all our rules, and defy the law in a way that moves us all outside of American political history. In fact, outside of being a Western democracy, as we used to understand that term.
He will warp the system and rig the game for himself and the tech bros enriching themselves so that the only context now is his will and his movement’s anti-democratic oligarchical fervor. Trump won’t stop until American values are no more than a crypto-type charade.
Trump’s 300 executive orders are just a start.
How did we allow this?

Trump was re-elected. Project 2025 is in full swing. The weird perverts are running the show now. Everything you said 5 months ago has come true. We are screwed.
Not the first time Republicans have been compared to the Taliban with superb insight. Thank you Frank for standing up for girls and women all over the world.
The Reconstructionists sound very similar to the Dominionists or the "7 Mountains" people. Are they one and the same, or different movements?
Oh, Vance? One of the principle architects of the 4 pillar Project 2025. A usurper of Article I of the Constitution.
What a load of BS she spews. All over a apocryphal book written nearly 2000 years - about what was happening back then!
What about our for profit health care system, we need to move past it
The influence from the donor class has disfigured the Democratic Party. Democrats must be the party of the working class. Actually Democrats must all grow some balls! Not in gender but personality! We need to follow Bernie Sanders and Sherrod Brown.
The bow in Simone’s window 😳
I AM AWARE ABOUT "THE OPUS DEI" AAAH ! BELIEVE IT OR NOT JESUE CHRIST 'S HIS MESSAGE WAS PEACE THAT PREACHED ! ALL EVILS ARE IN POWER & MONEY !!!! HENCE, HUMANS HAVE GONE WACKY & WEIRD ! POWER IS MONEY !! FROM, THE UNITED KINGDOM. (2025). (Apologies, for CAPS).
EVIL !EVIL! ALL AROUND THE WORLD PEOPLE !!!! HUMANANITY WE ALL BELONG TO. HMMMM ! JD. VANCE AND ALL THE REST OF THEM ! 👹👺!!! 💯 FROM, THE UNITED KINGDOM. (2025). ( Apologies, for CAPS).
Maybe those "coded letters" would mean something to you if you believed in fighting discrimination and hate, rather than appeasing the haters.
And what did we do to fight the discrimination and hate when our alphabets were maligned and lied about? What did we do to articulate our support? How did our inaction correcting propaganda further endanger our loved ones? How is our complete inability to self-reflect keeping us from winning? I'm not appeasing the haters. I'm saying we made it easy for them, and shame on us for doing it.
Dems have systematically suppressed left populism in their own ranks, and this is why they lose. Now it’s too late. There won’t be an election in 2026, you realize that don’t you?
Feckless Democrats aren’t going to save us. I’ve gone full socialist.
Can you inform people about the 2 special elections in Florida for house seats in April ?
Frank, actually most voters voted for someone other than Donald Trump. He's not as popular as you're making him out to be. Misogyny alone probably cost Harris, and US, the election.
It's not about the Right vs. the Left; It's about the Rich vs. the Poor. It's about the allegedly 5 million minority votes/voter suppression that were rejected during the 2024 election..Wake up people !
But the Democratic Party was not doing what you cite here. We did make the mistake of letting the GOP think that is what we are all about.
Democrat policies: funding foreign wars, illegal immigrants over homeless Americans, telling parents they have no right to know what their children are learning, and telling teenage girls they need to share their sports and spaces with boys pretending to be girls.
Real simple plan for the Dems: 1. Don’t get baited into culture war BS. 2. Show the Republicans for the liars and oligarch sellouts they are. 3. Develop policies that return the resources of the country to the benefit of ALL residents. The oligarchs simply squander it and we can’t afford that.
A man pretending to be a woman is still a man. Democrats have no policies for poor Americans.
Those are the steps. Frank is caving to #1, unfortunately. It's very disappointing and he should know better.
What you read about JD Vance is your own distorted mind. You are reflecting on others your own imaginary world and in denial of those that came berore him that made life for Simple American difficult and unbearable in the last four years.
The Democrats are in on the plan to collapse society - how else does one describe the absolute ineptitude and stupidity that has become the Democratic Party? Just watch Chuck Schumer: "We will win! We will win! We will win!" What and idiot! It comes across as scripted and planned. As though they knew they would need to appear to be "trying" but basically they vacated and handed the reigns willingly to MAGA and Trump. If course I'm hysterical - conspiracies like that have never happened before, right? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The dems have a zero sum policy thats been killing it for years 1 issue voters should start their own parties then when the time comes they can choose their poison by having them in the tent they're more likely to burn it down than build it up Gop dont care as long as one of their issues is on a platform theyll go down on that ship not saying its right and not looking to excluude anyone but sometimes you have to cut the dead weight
European leftie perspective. For the sake of robust political discourse i would like to see Democrats split in two. Liberal and social democrats are so different in identifying problems and drifting apart rather than the other way around. As shown here. _(Policies that are designed to ensure integration flipped on his head slurishly as "identity politics". Each policy is aimed at one identity. Some don't want to hear that this identity (americano) is treated/treats itself unequally. don't tell don't see approach)_ Given your population structure and religious history this creates tension that is not healthy in the long run and helps reactionaries. And those know how to make you _believe_ the emphasis is too abnormal, outright _inhumane_ . All while this is a fraction o the actual program. In that regard they are way smarter. We have our own problems with our "MAGA", but they are pretty much compartmentalized down to 20%. Still a political force - which is kinda ok - but really slowing down the potential damage and giving some breathing room.
We don't have a parliamentary system. What you're suggesting would split the Dem vote and make it easier for the fascist MAGAs to win.
@@dfritz4524 I see: - a lot of movement around party lines (and only money the driving ideological factor) - Never-Trumper (and the billionaires following) - GOP-members uncomfortable with MAGA - liberals who would rather mute the "far left"-wing What i'm saying is there are folks that are likely only loyal to the GOP because of the "far left". Scoop up those and the 3 strains would be happier and distinguishable seperated. Obviously systemic changes need to be done. You calling yourself a union. Personally i don't see one if no changes will follow to this... shitshow.
@@swengross46 The extreme elements of both parties are hopelessly obstinate. Maybe a few years of fascism will make the far left come to its senses. I'm fearing that any discussions about party strategy may prove to be moot, though, because like all fascist regimes, they'll rig the election system so that it's impossible to win another election. I'm 68. I never thought I'd have to deal with anything like this. It's surreal. Thank you for your thoughts, my friend.
Democrats need to stop taking money from billionaires
As long as the Democrats keep funding themselves with Big Donor Money and ignoring the wishes of the American people they will continue to lose.
I recalled one of your recent talks and very much took to heart your observation that there are two ways forward out of this: hubris or humility. I fully there are many on the so-called "left" who behave with hubris -- and when I witness it, I call it out. Theologian Matthew Fox came out with a book last year called "Trump & the MAGA Movement as Anti-Christ." I think he'd make a very interesting guest.
Hi Frank, we're the same age. My left leg was club foot and "fixed" but is 1/2" shorter than right. You and I shared many things like Cancer removal from my cheek like your forehead. Had a stroke in 2010 and Carotid surgery last year. I should've been dead because I lived like an idiot most of my life BUT Science was able to keep me on top of the dirt. Thanks Frank...
I am not from your country but have followed American politics and all the elections. I never heard the democrats running for office mentioning or pushing extreme views on gender. Harris was inclusive and addressed health, economy and equality and justice for all in all her speeches. However I kept hearing about this from right wing family members. I honestly believe it’s the propaganda of right wing media that is so powerful and followed extensively that created the fear and hatred. Even “mainstream” media did not do any justice for the democrats. Both parties have always had extreme fringe elements - the right won because of all the disinformation and fear mongering including religious extremism going on for many years. I believe the downfall of democracy has happened because of your laws allowing absolute lies to be spewed on so called “news outlets”.
Yes. Thank you.
This is an extremely disappointing take, and I’ve been watching you for a while. The issue is we don’t lean into our values ENOUGH. If we had pushed Medicare for All, a wealth tax. Sensible gun laws - unashamedly - it wouldn’t have mattered if the Republicans made an issue of trans folks. We don’t throw equal rights under the bus and trample our allies. Every party has its fringe, especially if it has a big tent. You don’t gain votes by denying admittance. You bring everyone in. The thing is, many progressives stayed home because they didn’t believe the party stood for them. Please think about what you are saying. I know you don’t want to hear what many of us are saying in these comments. I understand your issue with “birthing person,” and empathize to an extent - language is a big issue with our party and always has been - but if you don’t think we can allow birthing person into the tent when the other side is accepting literal nazis into its party and winning elections? You don’t realize that it’s a communication issue on a massive scale, not an issue of allowing “fringe” members in the party.
This guy sounds like a maga wanna-be. full of shit.
So you're saying the Democrats should not be all inclusive of everyone and work for all Americans. Democrats also have a problem with oligarchs and wealthy Representatives who look out for the wealthy/themselves and not the rest of us.
The exact opposite. I'm saying that we should be fiercely proud of the inclusivity of the Democratic Party and that we *must* define it in terms that don't allow the opposition to malign our good and noble work and lie about us. We aren't protecting anyone we care about if the only thing we're interested in is virtue signaling and language policing. We got silly when we should have gotten serious, and if we aren't even capable of the slightest bit of honest self-reflection after a devastating loss, we are cooked. It is not enough to just want people to be better because it's the right thing to do, and if we can't figure out how to break through this garbage noise and obvious propaganda and reach our neighbors who could have been convinced that the Republicans were *actually* using them and the Democrats *actually* do want a better life for everyone, *which also includes them*, then we're not *actually* in this fight, we're just hoping for the best, which unfortunately does not win elections.
The problem is that Biden and his DOJ failed our country by not throwing the coup felon and his coup plotters in prison immediately and held over until trial. What you're saying is too late now, a true dem, a day late and a dollar short, all talk but never any action. Who lets a felon coup plotter run for office? The Dems of course.
Keep up the good work. It was your work in the 1970's birthing the radicalness of the pro-life movement that helped to endless finance right-wing outrage preachers and set the course towards Trump. Abortion, gay rights, and now transgenderism are the gifts that just keep giving in the minds of Republicans who seek to paint Democrats as radical anti-God leftists. I suspect the project of waking up the American people will take generations for them to climb down from their belief in the need for white, Christian, male domination of their fellow Americans. A small cabal of such people ruled over South Africa for generations. Once they get into power, and now they are in power in the White House, it is very difficult to evict them.
If this is what lost them the election then it certainly isn't because Kamala was harping on social issues. She just didn't. She was focused on the economy. People have this narrative that she focused on far left vurtue signaling and she just. Did. Not! People are projecting that onto her because that's what they think of when they think of Dems. She never even once mentioned trans people. I believe to her detriment with some people. Everyone who says that social issues lost the election needs to go back and watch every single one of her speeches. I defy you to find one mention of any of this
Why taking sides ? They are all from the same basket. Six of the one half a dozen of the other. You are just as deceived by believing the democracy lie.
Don’t bother. The Democrats don’t care about anything expect for “campaign donations”. You might as well switch your allegiance to the Green Party.
Thank you Frank.
The Democratic party is the party of Constitutional preservation. Look at it that simply.
Thanks, Frank.
So 2 things, but first I will agree that yes catering to far leftists and explicitly their problems is the wrong method, you aren't wrong that its tone deaf to focus on a minority when the majority is suffering. But your argument goes off track in two ways. Saying that it is an 'anti-science bubble' is way off mark and would only betray our morals and ideals. I can go so far as to say 1 billion genders is absolutely and blatantly ridiculous, but your message feels as if it's painting the entire group as rooted in anti-science. I find it ridiculous to word it in such a dismissive way. A betrayal of our smallest, betrays us all, as fascism has quite often taught us the hard way. Second is that suggesting this loss is in any way due to the messaging of the first point, neither Kamala nor Biden even focused on that even once. They were very clearly focused on the economy and comparing themselves to the alternative. They were very particular about their messaging reaching all Americans, not just our left. You have forgotten their campaign already if you believe this.
frank, You ainTt no food pi boy.
It was the Republican voter suppression campaign.
Thank you for your work, your messages, your commitment. One of the things I feel somewhat hopeless regarding 'winning again' is fox tv. So many rural Americans get their beliefs and perspective only from what their 'trusted' fox hosts who have become 'their family' tell them. I don't see a way to get any message past those daily fox propaganda believed with religious zeal. My own family is part of that fox fanatic family. I don't see hope... yet.
^^^^^THIS^^^^^ People who are unaware or who have never watched Faux News tend to underestimate its impact... I say this as a formerly indoctrinated individual myself. Finally the stench got so bad I decided to hear other sides and weigh the evidence. Well mainstream media Maylene slightly to the left, Fox News is hard-core right wing propaganda intended to pump up adrenaline in its followers and boost ratings no matter the cost.
Thank you Frank for speaking up for what most democrats believe. The Democratic Party needs to be the party of sense and sanity. Not extremism and oligarchy. I fear the next couple years will see an unprecedented dismantling of the constitutional order. Hope I am wrong.
Can you explain at what point during her campaign did she mention anything he talked about in this video?
@@AuntieMamies First of all, I like the cat meme in your pic. My stepson has a rag doll similar looking to Grumpy Cat. In retrospect, the Harris Campaign was probably doomed from the start. While she certainly didn't run a 'Woke/DEI' campaign, she simply wasn't able to muster up the support she needed from working class voters in the swing states. Trump has been running a non-stop campaign for 4 years and love him or hate him he was a known entity. Harris was also unable to walk back some of her statements from the 2019 Democratic primary which the Trump Campaign used against her to great effect. In any case, the damage that Trump is doing and will do to our Constitutional Republic will take years to fix if ever. Republicans may be savoring this moment, but Trump won a relatively narrow victory and Democrats will eventually enact their own 'retribution'.
@karmadave I'm not sure Dems are gonna get the opportunity to do that. He's trying to get rid of the FEC chair. There's really only 1 reason for that. There's no guarantee that the Democrats are gonna be in power ever again. There's a good possibility that elections are over. I hope I'm wrong. But you're right, she didn't have the time. And really he's been campaigning for a decade. Just doesn't go away. Like shit in the grooves of your shoes
I usually agree with you, but not this time. I'm a very involved Democrat and I never heard most of these terms before. We lost because there are many many Americans who are spiritually and emotionally immature, and clinging to hateful attitudes towards others to compensate for self loathing. The reasons for that self loathing is another conversation, but it is not the Democrat's fault. No one can look at Trump and not see that he is a cruel, shallow, vindictive man. That is what they wanted.
I agree!😢
Right. I watched almost all of Kamala’s rallies while I was working, and she DID mention the issues that matter, like fighting corporations and raising the minimum wage and common sense gun laws. It was ALL she talked about. Not once did she mention anything about gender identity or anything the right claims that the dems care about. The problem is the people did. Not. Listen. They heard their fox news propaganda because it was already telling them what they wanted to hear. Hate. Hate hate.
@LonGoneAnonthank you! I'm so glad someone else said it. She never once mentioned social issues. Ever
Hi Will. I'm not on FB anymore, haven't been for almost a year. Thanks for speaking up. I, too, am a longtime Frank Schaeffer fan who was taken aback by this video, and I also posted some of my disagreements with him. While he makes some valid points, I don't think that ANY of what he cited cost the Dems the election. Exit polls showed that people who don't follow politics closely voted for Trump by an almost 2-1 margin. That statistic jumped off the page at me when I saw it. Then my thoughts went to those little devices that everyone carries around with them now, which the most nefarious elements of humanity have been using to pump their lies and propaganda into our brains 24/7, so that even if someone doesn't formally follow politics, their thinking is going to be influenced subconsciously. So while there's always room for improvements on how the Dems do messaging, it's self-defeating to take part in the circular firing squad that Democrats formed after the election. Note that the MAGAs never do that.
@@dfritz4524Dems don’t communicate as effectively as MAGA. They don’t tell a story dumb people can understand. Rightwing media has addicted all those nonpolitical, 6th-grade educated voters to hate and anger, and social media captured by muX closed the loop. Dems depend on people’s ‘better angels’ to appeal to their reason. MAGA nurses demonic suggestion clothed in Murikan relijun, etc. I can see how the eclipse of democracy came about but it’s too late for Dem pols who still act as though it were possible to shame MAGAts. They just don’t get it.
Amen
Those were some hard-to-hear truths, Frank. Thank you for sharing them.
The Republicans bring up false issues, but then what happens if Progressive politicians don't stand up for the marginalized? Hate crimes and groups rise. Are we just supposed to abandon the people they are hurting? Maybe I'm misunderstanding. Also, I didn't see any of this during Kamala's campaign. A reporter only brought it up to Kamala to ask about the endless false ads from the Republicans and their bought media.
Sorry brother, i agree with you most of the time, but i dont think it was pronouns or genders that lost this election, it was propaganda and ignorance.
As much as I respect a lot of your work, I think your letter creates a straw man to beat on. And I am 72, have been a Democrat all my life -- and don't give two hoots in hell about gender pronouns and all that stuff you built up. Here is a much bigger problem: the message vacuum that the opposition had the luxury to fill with the stuff you brought up. Every president from FDR to Obama spoke to the nation each and every week via a (usually) Saturday address. Most of the time it was pretty much a kind of status quo, everything-is-AOK kind of thing. Trump stopped them Biden never revived them. Keep in mind that when Biden took office our nation had lost over 400,000 lives to a virus that was horribly mismanaged by Trump. 400,000 is the number of Americans lost on battlefields in FOUR years of World War 2. The nation was shocked and grief-stricken and NEEDED a voice like the one that assured us during the Depression and that war. That voice never came -- and so we had to deal with the silence that was filled by a lot of other crap.
Fox noise
The Democratic Party shows total intolerance toward its own left populist edge. Bernie would have beaten trump handily in 2016 if MSM and DNC did not gang up on him to shut down the populist fervor he stirred. Instead the DNC listened to their corporate donors (the PMC Frank complains about) and hewed to the ‘center’. The consultants got paid, they didn’t care if Dems lost. Democratic Party cut itself free from workers and their concerns after 1968. We are a doomed nation because there won’t be further elections now that MAGA II has control and direct kleptocratic oligarchy is the rule.
Thank you for your thoughtful comment. I, like so many of my fellow democrats, am incredibly frustrated that the language our side uses gets twisted and lied about. That's not our fault. Not having a cogent, sane, normal response to all of that disinformation that the Republicans used against us certainly didn't help our cause.
@@FrankSchaefferRUclips They actively refused to combat it instead of coming up with a strategy to refute it. We don't throw members of our own community under the bus because some of them insist on us using certain language. I know some people can be unreasonable. I was told I shouldn't have an opinion on Will Smith slapping Chris Rock because I'm a white person. When I replied that I was there to listen, I was told go listen somewhere else. When people are marginalized, they may adopt protection mechanisms that we as privileged people might not understand. I know you know all this. If we had leaned into our values of protecting those hurting economically, taxing the wealthy, lowering housing and grocery prices, and pushing hard for Medicare for all - if we had had an effective communication strategy, that would have helped. Instead, the campaign acted from fear instead of going on the offense. I'm sure the trans messaging had an impact, but when you don't answer it, this is the result. We screamed about the dangers of Project 2025 and they all said, "don't be ridiculous." Would it have been so difficult to campaign heavily on "no, kids in blue states don't go to school and come back a different gender?" Would it have been difficult to stress, "no, we don't allow babies to be 'aborted after birth,' that's just ridiculous." No... There were so many issues that didn't have a clear, concise answer. THAT, I believe, was the issue.
