Today marks the 22nd anniversary of the darkest day in modern American history. We all watched in horror as some of the pillars of American pride and democracy were so rudely disgraced and demolished by terrorists before our eyes. American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 (Twin Towers); United Airlines Flight 93 (Shanksville, PA; assumed target the U.S. Capitol Building) and Am...

Steve Harley died in March of 2024. RIP
A true genius and perfectionist. I imagine that is a very difficult personality to live with and sadly deep inside leaves a broken man. Dreams achieved, but at the cost of a lot of wreckage and a singular life.
I am not a fan of Patti Lupone at all - I always find her vocals shouty and her characterisation weak but I have to say - she absolutely kicks ass in this and she looks BEAUTIFUL. If she’d have asked me to run away to the seaside with her - I’d have said yes lol!
I couldn’t agree more with you except for the running away with her to the beach part. I too find her voice rough, nasal and shouty and her acting unpolished and one note. On a celebrity level she is always agressive and unrespectfull towards many in her own industry. She clearly misunderstands making a strong statement with being downright rude. BUT she is excellent here. Maybye because the roughness of the character matches her own persona.
@@jmaindigo6641Yeah I think you’re right. I also think Sondheim’s work is so powerful and beautifully written that you can’t help but do it well. I truly was surprised here by her because I found myself watching avidly and normally I would switch her off. I always have an issue with her lazy diction too but here she was so clear and precise. It’s a shame because - like you say - she has an appalling reputation for being vile to everyone she works with but now I like her in this….
@@ClassyContralto Yes, right on! I totally get the strange contradictory feeling of coming back to watch her here and finding myself surrendering to her perfomance every time. I saw her in Sunset Boulevard in London many years ago and yes, she gave that huge raw vocal sound but her acting was very shallow and opaque and then saw it again with Betty Buckley and Elaine Paige and was like watching an entirely different piece, heartfelt and moving. But as you say Sondheim talent makes everything soar.
In the show, Christine is seduced by the mysterious figure known as the Phantom......until she sees his face and decides to run off with the handsome Raoul instead. In real life, Sir Andrew Lloyd-Webber wrote an entire masterpiece for his wife.......and she ran off with the keyboard player in the show. What's the lesson? It doesn't matter how gifted and talented you are if you're not equally attractive...
they also, it seems, cheated on their prior spouses with each other, so... perhaps the lesson is a little different.

This farewell performance of Music Of The Night is exquisite and absolutely astounding.
Howard Kissel talking so much s**t about Sarah Brightman’s looks and TALENT while he’s sitting there looking like the crypt keeper.
The first time I watched this it was with my parents and we absolutely died hearing that coming from that little wart
Bring it back
my ex always had the poster up, said it was her favorite show, i saw a few snippets of it and decided " opera...nah!" Years later, sadly after she passed away I finally watched it, can barely hold back tears now hearing the music thinking of her and realizing I was her phantom and did not know it.
7:51 is where it starts btw!!

Ascoltare QUELLA voce dal vivo....e chi se la scorda più quella serata?
The preview meant to begin on Saturday 27th September 1986 but was postponed to 30th September.
Watching this again, I just remembered that Steve Harley recently passed away. I said a prayer for his family, when I saw the news on social media. (6/3/2024)

I love how Christian acts shocked at 25:22 about the tony bony, like he didn't whisper to Andrew about it during the performance
HELP ME I WAS ABT TO COMMENT THAT
WHAT. I NEED TO HEAR ABOUT THIS
@@Ieatrocks3 go to the performance from the 2017 tonys on youtube and put it on full volume, then watch Christian's mouth closely when he's on the floor at "sex and games in NYC have gotta be played with flair, and passion, and passion and flair" (and also it looks like andrew responded which is even funnier)

The Phantom will be back on Broadway one day! He's just on vacation.
Hopefully we'll see a revival within the next 5-10 years
On vacation? With that face? No, I think Christine locked him up in the dungeons and then she and Raoul went cruising with the Kardashians...
However uploaded this is a certified legend! Grazie a tutti!

I’m sorry did that critic say she’s not pretty & has a little voice? Ummm ya she only a dancer whose stunning with this doe eyes & God forbid has a sweet voice instead of a belting voice like many. 🙄
This is the exact broadcast I was watching live that morning. Charles Gibson as cool as ice "That looks like a second plane that has just hit" Will never ever forget this footage. Who I was with......where.......what I was doing. It was a very very surreal day to say the least.
Now we know why Andrew kept licking his lips during I Believe.
