Hollywood Cinemas..... Anglia TV Here and Now......20000
So did the hollywood norwich use film reels to the end because i know great yarmouth did change to digital.
They all changed to digital at the same time, we were putting together some old 35mm trailers for a coffee table
@@hollywoodcinemasmemories8555 ahhhh
Saw 2 movies here! Lovely auditorium. Saw Heaven Can Wait in 35mm (Julie Cristie, Warren Beaty version) and Star Trek 2 The Wrath Of Khan in 70mm! Sad to see it unused a week ago! Hope it may be "resurrected" one day as a cinema
No one will ever open a large singe screen cinema. The refurbish cost of a multi-screen also makes no sense, cheaper to build a new multiplex. With cinema admission dropping like they are, only a fool would invest in any kind of cinema.
@@MichaelBeenyyour quite right in saying nobody will open a large single screen cinema again but Uk cinema attendance are actually increasing again. UK attendance in 2023 was 135.1 million compared to 127 million in 2022 and compared to the worst ever year of 1984 when only 54million tickets were sold I think they’re not doing to bad recovering from the Covid pandemic. Although admittedly still some way off the 2019 record of 176.1 million.
Sad to see the old place not in use and today borded up by wood, always used the hollywood for our cinema goings. It was well managed It's not the same going to the vue or the odeon
0:47 Oh WOW. Looks At The Size Of This Circle Shaped Helium Balloon. It's BIG. Thanks Mate. X
I'd never seen this before- great to learn about the Mayes family involvement in Fakenham and see some different clips of the reopening in 2000.
Fakenham was a good conversation into three screens, and a great opening night
I remember the since-demolished ABC cinema at the top of Regent's Road. You could see the ABC lights from the Acle Straight. There was also a cinema at the Empire and the Windmill on GY seafront. Closed years ago but then both were opened again in the mid '90s, or thereabouts.
I often think of the old ABC Cinema lights when I drive into Yarmouth in the evenings and yes I operated the Windmill and Empire Cinemas in the niceties
Well it lasted for another 18 years so not too bad of an investment.
Not a bad innings I suppose, up against three other cinemas including two multiplexes!
@@hollywoodcinemasmemories8555 Last film I saw there was the 2018 Michael Myers Halloween film. There was only about 3 or 4 people in the audience so I knew it wasn't going to be long before the place shuts down.
What a beautiful old theatre/cinema, I really hope someone takes it on and bring it back to life somehow. If not a cinema or theatre I'm sure it could be a attraction of some kind. 😊
Hi do you have any footage of Great Yarmouth Hollywood cinema, I grew up going here I used to love that place, Sadly now being the Arc Cinema it has.the same feel as all the others and lacks the atmosphere it once had
Nice
Its a great building i agree, check daves digital movies on Utube he has some good material
@@hollywoodcinemasmemories8555I was one of these people who didn’t like the multiplex yes both multiplex’s have now got recliners at cheap prices but it misses the charm of cinema RIP Hollywood cinema Norwich
My mother, Frances Roberts, was a friend of Michael's. She used to send him autographed photos of some of the movie stars she knew and had worked with. He used to call her, "the Lady from Hollywood." We visited Michael and his replica theater in 1998, with my 13 and 9 year old daughters. He showed us a film and served treats from an usher's tray. We have lovely memories from that day, and I'm sad that he's gone. Frances died just two months before Michael, at the age of 97, from dementia. She always spoke fondly of Michael and had hoped to see him again. Maybe, now, she has. (I have photos from that day, if anyone is interested.)

Another Summer Season.....soon comes around ......🙄 😎
A black Zionist religious group based in London now owns this building. Not sure what they intend to do with it. It was recently listed as one of many theatres worth preserving by a national theatre heritage foundation. I fear it may just rot unused until it is demolished.
I had a meeting with this group a few years ago and it is a strange situation, we are keeping an eye on events and it is good news that the authorities are aware

Thanks for posting this excellent video. This is a tribute to its original creator Fredrick Holmes Cooper who opened it in 1914 on Boxing day in the era of silent films, but the building also doubled as a theatre for live entertainment. The story goes that there was a cottage on the original site and the owner refused to move so they just carried on building around his home until he eventually gave in and left. The building has become close to demolition on more than one occasion and it is thanks to the efforts of supporters, including the late Ken Dodd and Roy Hudd, that ensured it was granted a Grade 2 listing by the DOE. As with many of these buildings it was Bingo that saved it. It needs restoring and brought back to a useful life.
Please can you message me. I have a question to ask about the Regent Cinema. Thanks
Hi , How can I help you?
Hollywood Cinemas memories Hello. Do you know the owners for Regent/abc Cinema?
50 years, it seems like just yesterday. Not many cinemas of this style around these days. Thanks for the memory. Long live the cinema!!!!!
I can agree with that David! It has a very original award winning design
Fantastic memories of this cinema from the 90s.. hope it gets a new lease of life
Those were the days... real film projectors!
Thanks for uploading, I remember this but just wonder what will become of the building and cinema now.
Good question Gavin, there is development plans which was passed by the local council but English Heritage have put in an appeal , so depending on the outcome of that may decide the fate of the Cinema building
@@hollywoodcinemasmemories8555 oh ok interesting. Love all these videos of the cinemas thank you.
Unfortunately Trevor went bust and the doors are permanently closed. It is facing demolition. With the current state of the industry it is unlikely that Norwich could accommodate another cinema.
@@hollywoodcinemasmemories8555 the cinema is planned to be demolished and there is no plans yet of a new cinema
They don't make films like this anymore, great times!
Very True!
Really interesting I was too young to visit the regent as a cinema but have fond memories of the ABC that got knocked down which still shocks me to this day they were allowed to do this.
Thank you for posting this, I used to work in here when it was the Mecca bingo in the 90s sad to see it how it is now, such a lovely building that deserves to be preserved somehow.
Hi Gavin , Thanks for the response and your right it needs to be preserved and Mecca Bingo seems to have looked after the building while they had it and we can hope that one day the Regent is reopened in some form
@@hollywoodcinemasmemories8555 I really hope so... It would be great as a live theatre like the Lowestoft one maybe. Did you get the opportunity to go into the cellar on your visit in the basement off from the old tea room, there used to be a massive old stove down there. We used to store all the bingo books down there. I remember running up and down the stairs when deliveries came. Was the upstairs bar behind the balcony there still as well?
Glad to see you now have a youtube channel. Yes the Regent was the best cinema in Gt Yarmouth. The 70mm shows were out of this world, 2001 A Space Odyssey springs to mind. Would be nice to see the old place reopened.
Anything is possible David!
