Great presentation. John’s a great teacher. Here’s my question: I don’t wish to knock architects…I am one…but I must ask why the use of a building enclosure engineer hasn’t become a standard practice for all projects above the residential level. Most firms rely on a whole battery of engineering consultants from civil to IT yet we are still uneven at best on enclosures. And yes…we architects become coordinating “jacks of all trades…masters of none”. We need to know significant amounts about the engineering disciplines we work with but for some reason we still think we can manage enclosures…only to be told by people like Straub…”you guys don’t know that detailing a window in precast is different from detailing in cavity-wall”. And let’s be honest enclosures have gotten so much more complex and meanwhile staff architects spend more time building “smart components” in Revit and mastering the latest rendering software then learning how buildings are actually put together.
