Yes to all you've said, but a problem remains: The histogram gets the information from the (embedded) JPG, not from what the sensor really "sees", which would be the raw picture. Now, the info in the JPG only has a max value of 255, after that the channel "blows out", i.e. no more useable info. The raw picture, however, only blows out after 1024 (10 bit), 4096 (12 bit) etc, so there's room beyond where JPG finishes. Therefore, I'd always try to centre my histogram as much as possible, unlike you did in the example. You stopped raising the EV when the left minimum wandered into the acceptable area but still left quite some space to the left ( which would be a rule one might call "expose to the left" instead of ETTR, while I would rather ETTM). That would be three "philosophies", neither of which are basically wrong, unless you know your sensor has particular weakness in a certain area. I would have liked to see you discuss this, if only to see whether my thoughts are valid (I'm perfectly able to think complete nonsense), but perhaps you didn't want to spend the time. Any way, thanks for your thoughts!
