Plot twist: this was once a functional society and their enemy was already long defeated, but all of this is just a training drill for future readiness that was accidentally left running. Something bad happened and the ones at the top didnt get to end the drill before they died. Food gets delivered to an empty fortress. Then robots serve the food to an empty table, and then discards it all as leftovers. The whole society had been set up in a way that diverts all resources not used for self-replacement into making those shells and shooting it into random empty space, as dictated by some simulation computer software. Kids go to school to learn about an alien race they were fighting that has already went extinct from the bombardments.
