Efficient Model Equilibration in Discrete Element Method and Particle Flow Code (PFC).
Model equilibration is very critical before solving any problem in DEM. To attain this equilibrium state quickly and efficiently is done through various ways. One of the famous techniques is to use timestep scaling and calming cycles to attain equilibrium in a stage-wise manner.
This method removes the additional random velocities from the system and reduced the unbalanced forces in the system quickly so that model can move towards more stable states.

Thanks for the video. It was really helpful. Could you do a simple tutorial video on how to conduct direct shear test with clumps. Many thanks
Thank you for this video. How to learn this software is there anything expect documentation?
How long did it take to calculate this case?
There is no simulation that is being run in this video. This is just a preparation video that is utilized on a later stage.

Thank you, could you help in installing anchors into soil in PFC 3D
I have not done that kind of study. However, i know that the difficulty will lie in defining the interface between the anchor and fill material. For these kind of problems i would suggest you to use better software such as PLAXIS or FLAC.
Hello, do you know how to couple PFC with DualSPHysics bidirectionally? Thanks
I know it has to be done using a handshake algorithm provided in the pfc manual. However, i was not very successful in doing that.
Is this software compatible with MacOS??
No, currently it is compatible with windows and linux only.
If you don't get elevation from different dates from GPS visualizer, then how you can detect changes in elevation of a particular for a period of time.
That is an extremely valid point. You cannot unless you have some other source for elevation. That is the reasin in this tutorial towards the end you dont get definitive results. The purpose of this video is to generate DEM with the help of available tools. I have further refined my DOD analysis using drone data, which is not included in this video.
I found your videos on really informative! I'm currently working on a project where I'm conducting material tests and calculating fracture under load stress. However, I'm encountering an issue where the data is not being captured in the CSV file as expected. I'm not sure what's causing this problem. Could you please help me troubleshoot this issue? I'd greatly appreciate any insights or guidance you can provide.
It would have been better, if you could describe your issue more clearly. If you are having trouble importing data from a csv file which is more common, it might be due to the syntax which is required for proper csv file. Look for table import command in the pfc manual where you will fine three necessary condition on how to format the csv file so that it can be imported correctly.

Sir do you know how to create clumps inside cylinder?please respond
The procedure is similar to what has been shown in the other video of rockfall simulation. Just create the cylinder, and while creating the clump particles in the bins, use the dimensional coordinates inside the cylinder. That will do it
use the "box" keyword to create the clumps with specified coordinates. Try it, if you have issues, feel free to ask.

hello, the error i am facing is "Sum of volume fractions is not unity !"? What does this mean?
""clump distribute porosity 0.15 diameter number-bins 6 box -30 30 -30 30 -30 30 ... bin 1 size 16 15 volume-fraction 0.03 group 'clump1' template 'clump1' ... bin 2 size 15 14 volume-fraction 0.12 group 'clump2' template 'clump2' ... bin 3 size 14 13 volume-fraction 0.30 group 'clump3' template 'clump3' ... bin 4 size 13 12 volume-fraction 0.4 group 'clump4' template 'clump4' ... bin 5 size 12 11 volume-fraction 0.12 group 'clump5' template 'clump5' ... bin 6 size 11 10 avolume-fraction 0.03 group 'clump6' template 'clump6'"", While using this
the error is raised as the total volume fraction sum is not 1. As seen in my code the sum of volume fraction is one. That is must as it means you know what is the amount of each group in the box, so there is no unknown material generated. If this error is coming to your script check for typing mistake.
Hello, sir. May i ask for some questions? I´m new with the PFC software .Thank you for this Rockfall simulation. When I use Rhinoceros software to process the 3D mesh to generate a .stl or .dxf file, I import it into PFC 5.0 with the following code "geometry import 'nanpin.stl', wall import geometry nanpin clean nothrow ". the result of the wall in the generation of the code but there is an error 'no facets in the specified range'. based on the above situation. May I ask you how to solve this problem? thank you, sir. I am also trying to scale down the 3D mesh in Rhinoceros. but the result is not as good as I expected! Thank you, sir.

hello sir can we import that 3D terrain model in Plaxis 3D?
Yes you can import this terrain in PLAXIS 3D. However the adaptation required to include there is out of my scope.
Hello. Can this software be used for landslide simulation based on photogrammetric 3D model data?
Yes you can. However you need to understand the limitations of the software in terms of particle sizing, physics behind the simulation and dry or wet simulation.
Very well Explained, Can we model the hydraulic fracturing at lab scale; injection of fluid instead of axial load confined at specific stress, pore pressure and temperature. Regards
yes you can. However, that will require highly advanced skills because it will require coupling of PFC and a CFD software such as openfoam. but PFC team doesn't provide any support for this coupling process, so it is hard to crack and require proper knowledge of cfd software and python scripting.
dear can you share the link of that software or if you have kindly share the link. thanks
It is a proprietary software from Itasca corporation. Therefore, it is best to purchase an official copy from them, to avoid any ethical issues. However, you can submit for a trial software from them.
Sir , could you please how pfc software can be used for particle crushing?
Since PFC is based on Distinct Element Method, there is no direct method for particle crushing. However, you have freedom in your modelling technique. You can either model it as a bonded material with small particles and parallel bond of sufficient strength and once that strength is reached the bond will fail and material will disperse, this can be treated as particle crushing or disintegration.
Hi i have some Qs, how do you take elevations from diferent dates to make the diference? And what is the resolutions of DEMS? TY so much for answers.
You don't get elevations from different dates as these elevations has been recorded from a specific mission and time periods such as SRTM etc. If you want elevations from a specific period then you will need to generate the DEM using aerial imagery or SAR Images using photogrammetry softwares.
Thank you so much.. This tutorial video is very helpful & informative..
You are most welcome
thank you.
Nice video. Is it possible for you to simulate a triaxial compression test and methods of deriving the stress and strain in X, Y and Z directions.
Great suggestion!
Excellent presentation, thanks a lot for share. A question please, can you teach us how get the values Kn and Ks ? Please ? maybe another parameters needed to run the program. Thank you in advance. If you dont have time please share me a procedure or paper related with this procedure.
The values of kn and ks depends on the material behavior. So it matters whether your material is similar to metals that are known to have standard range of properties or soil like material where the range of properties vary over a large magnitude. So, if its the earlier one, you can find those in literature easily. However for the later case you will need a experimental or analytical results to find a value that works for you. It is one of the disadvantages of DEM that you don't get to work with laboratory ready parameters similar to FEM and FDM. So i would suggest you find any standard test for your material and calibrate the kn and ks for that material. As an example for soil, we perform triaxial test in lab and the simulate the same in DEM and change the values of kn and ks till i get a match with the elastic modulus. I hope it helps....
@@engineersmania7353 Thank you for help me to solve my question. I'll try to do triaxial test in PFC. Could you make a video show that please, for youtube ? In fact, I´m trying simulate a rockslide in a dump and I´m using the code in PFC Examples, and I'm changing value and stl files to do that. It´s my target.
@@freddycalderonvela6409 You don't need to perform your own coding PFC supplies a special package regarding this. you can search on their website they have a special package that include everything from sample preparation to testing and calibration.

Sir, can you show a program to simulate mining of hanging wall orebody without failure
Currently I am pursuing some other tasks so I will not be able to do it now. However, it is a good suggestion. I can tell you that there is an example simulation in PFC documentation, where they perform a stable simulation on the creating a tunnel face or mining in rock wall.
Good Day to you Sir ! Sir, Can you please tell if there is any way of Downloading the PFC 3D version ? I am not able to download the same from the website ?
PFC2d AND pfc3D are products of the same installation. if you just download and install the PFC, both of its components will be installed. you don't need separate installation
Hello, How can we prepare the perticle template of known particle shape and size.
You can use software such as solidwork, rhino if you have a complex geometry (so that you can import using a .stl file) otherwise if its a simple geometry, you can build it using wall commands in the PFC itself
thanks bro
Welcome
thanks a lot for this good video , I want to simulate impact of particle to a coating....is this simulation done with PFC?
Yes, it is done using PFC, Yes you can do that simulation by depicting a particle interacting with a wall. There is an example of particle rebound in PFC manual, you can refer there.
@@engineersmania7353 I need to assign high velocity to ball for example 1000m/s ,Do it done with pfc?

Hello sir thank you for your time and outclass video, sir can you let me know how to build a 3D granular materials model, I am working on landsliding to simulate the granular materials. I hope for your kind response
I have already made a video regarding that, using clump for rockfall. You can refer to it from the playlist section.
creating good work Avinash. really very informative.
thank you sir..
Actually howmany degrees of slope, cause to landslide.
It does not depend only on the slope angle as there are several stability and instability factors involved such as the cohesion, angle of shearing resistance, confinement. In easier words with stronger materials and stable condition you can see high degree slope as well as nearly vertical slopes also. I would advise you to read up on that.
Thanks for the demo, however, when I tried to run the dat file, an error occured says 'Sum of volume fractions is not unity ! While processing line 71 of file C:/rock_slide.dat.' May I know why it did not run properly?
It looks like you made some modifications to the file. If you have done so please check the sum of fractions is 1 in total. As in my file from bin 1-6 the total volume fraction is (0.03+0.12++0.3+0.4+0.12+0.03)=1. Now check yours.
You can change line 77 to this and it'll work. : bin 6 size 11 10 volume-fraction 0.03 group 'clump6' template 'clump6'
Is it possible to do this simulation in Altair EDEM.
Yes it can be done there too. But the syntax and code will change but the crus of problem remains same.
sir, python is necessary to use PFC? please reply. if yes then how much time required to learn python for PFC?
its not necessary because you have alternative as inline FISH language but to increase productivity and have complex simulation you will be better with python. The basic python which will be good enough for two weeks but might need 2-3 months for simulations involving CFD and coupling
Commendable avinas
