Ford 390 big block engine. Prob matching Ford trans. AMC bought lots of parts from other auto manufacturers, as did Checker. Chrysler bought AMC, meaning Chrysler parts as well.

Don was lucky that Smokey did that for him. Now did Don pass that same gesture on to someone he believed in too? Let’s hear the story.

I watched him many times at Famosa Drag Strip near Bakersfield, California. He was always a winner. Love that man.

Isnt that a coincidence , i worked for a chrysler dealer for 7 months , i seen them rip off this sweet old couple , and it left a bad taste in me for chrysler ..i ended up putting a new motor in there new car labor free at my house , they were valued customers from then on , until they passed 6 years later

I met Don Garlitts about six years ago at a car show in Somerset, Kentucky. He had a grip like a vice. Talked about seeing him race at Great Lakes Dragaway in Union Grove, Wisconsin back in the 70’s. I got to have a few words with him back then too!

I remember when he started to cover the rails of his dragster and was beating everyone. The competition started covering their rails and couldn't figure out why Garlits was still beating them. Garlits had realized that engine was,starving for fuel and put in oversized fuel lines and hid them by covering the frame 😂

When Racing was all about RACING ! Most drivers started as Moonshiners, thats how developed thier Driving Skills

I can't imagine going that fast in those cars much less on these tires. Look at the tires on cars today that's running that kind of speed. He didn't need a shut he could just drag his balls to slow him down they were that big back then.

Neighbor had 1. And a good friend from like 75 miles away had 1. He drag race that car. I had 76 CJ-5 Jeep came with 304. I during closed doors put 390 built in it. I couldn’t drive Jeep that thing was dangerous. Grabbed 2nd gear within 3 seconds went sideways & rolled about 6 times. Thank God I welded in a 6 point roll cage in it. Park it took engine out sold it. Built right them AMC would run now.

cant say that about much anymore , met Don Garlits in columbus at national trails race way weekend at the marriot inn where they were staying , met a lot of the Racers there then John force was another one it was cool .

I would love to visit his museum someday..if I make down there.

Stumbled across the Garlits museum in Florida. It was Awesome-highly recommended.

They were forced out by the New College of Sarasota. The building is being turned into a gym.
