Guided Walks UK
Добавлен 19 июл 2023
Hills for the Head primary mission is to reconnect people with our lovely countryside, nature, and the great outdoors, through the medium of guided walks.
We recognise how difficult it can be to venture into unfamiliar surroundings, especially when suffering ill health, but, the benefits of walking in green spaces are well established and publicised, and we believe in helping towards a better sense of wellbeing.
Walks are led by experienced MHFAs who will be sensitive to everyone’s needs. All are welcome and can expect to be treated, fairly, equally, and in a helpful manner.
This channel is here to showcase some of our walks, and give viewers a feel for the landscape they will be moving through, and who they will be moving through it with, should they take us up on our guiding services.
We also hope these videos, together with written guides and GPX files available from our website, will be a good resource for those of you not quite ready to join a group.

County Tops - Lancashire
Gragareth and Green Hill via Yordas Cave.
Yordas Cave, just off the narrow road through Kingsdale, was a tourist attraction in the 19th century. It is relatively easy to access, but you will need a good torch and dry weather to enjoy the cave fully.
Above it, the access land rises to the top of the highest point in modern day Lancashire - Gragareth.
Up until border changes in 1974, the highest point of Lancashire, almost unbelievably now, was The Old Man of Coniston, in the Lake District.
For those of you looking for quieter alternatives to the bustling ridge of Whernside across the other side of the valley exploring this hill is a good pick.
Use OS Explorer (1:25000) OL2.

Grassington to Conistone Pie Loop
Просмотров 45Год назад
Starting out from the bus station at Grassington, this (almost) circular walk in the #yorkshiredales first visits #linton #waterfalls, then traces the #river upstream through #wharfedale to the #village of Conistone. Climbing then through the #limestone #gill up onto the #moors to visit Conistone Pie, before tracking back along the Dales Way. A very fine walk. #hiking #walking #yorkshire

#hillsforthehead is about wellness first and foremost. #wellness means balance. #mentalhealth and #physicalhealth are inseparable. Our bodies and minds are so deeply interconnected that one simply cannot function correctly without the other. #modernlife seems like it would like us to forget that sometimes. But it cannot be coincidence that as we (societally and individually) become more #sedent...
Review of Osprey 3 litre drink bladder / reservoir.

Comparison of features between the Osprey 3 litre drink bladder, which I have been using for approximately 2 to 3 months now, and Camelbak bladder that I have been using for 20 years. #osprey #hiking #ospreypacks #review #camelbak #comparison #walking
Shropshire Way, Day 5, Much Wenlock to Ironbridge
Просмотров 42Год назад
We had planned to return to the Three Horseshoes at Wheathill so we could walk back over Brown Clee. The remoteness and lack of facilities in that area really is preventive. Even the Youth Hostel at Wilderhope Manor is a no-go, as now only accepts whole venue bookings. Much Wenlock would be worth spending some time in, historically significant as it is, and the same is true of Ironbridge. Even ...
Shropshire Way, Day 4; Ludlow to Wheathill
Просмотров 99Год назад
As we had accommodation already booked in Ludlow, made our way there by train. Overnight was great, breakfast missing a hash brown that was was promised on the menu. Ludlow would be a place to stop a while longer, if only just one day. It is a town of great importance historically; training ground for the heir to the throne for many years, and the castle is an unusually well preserved one. Lots...
Shropshire Way, Day 3; Clun to Craven Arms
Просмотров 98Год назад
Originally planned to walk all the way through to Ludlow. 4 barriers to achieving that in the end: 1) The heat. Unseasonably hot (nearing 30° in September) temperatures make progress slower than usual and much more fatiguing. 2) Breakfast. Can’t get it early enough to beat the heat from a B&B 3) Guidebook failure. Legs turning out to be 1.5 to 2 miles longer than stated. 4) Guidebook failure. M...
Shropshire Way, Day 2; Bishop’s Castle to Clun
Просмотров 144Год назад
Day 2 of our planned 5 days on the Shropshire Way long distance path. Starting from Bishop's Castle, joining up with the Offa's Dyke Path, then over the bump into Clun. A.E. Houseman said of this area: "Clunton, Clunbury, Clungunford and Clun, the quietest places under the sun". I think he might be right; a truly tranquil transition today. Maps Used: OS Landranger (1:50,000) 137 Accommodation &...
Shropshire Way, Day 1; Lyth Hill to Bishop’s Castle
Просмотров 178Год назад
Due to weather (unseasonably hot), we cut the first 4 miles between Shrewsbury and Lyth Hill. Conforming with conventional wisdom for the Shropshire Way would have us start in the town and finish at The Bridges in Ratlinghope (at the base of the Long Mynd). Our plan was to walk through to Bishop's Castle, which is usually the end of day 2. Total distance (including a couple of field edge divers...
Blue Super Moon, August 30th, 2023

Couldn’t get out for a proper walk. Doesn’t mean I couldn’t get out at all. Popped up to #alderleyedge to see the #bluemoon #supermoon and get some fresh air, amongst the #witches and the #pagan people who also like to celebrate such things. The view over #manchester towards Winter Hill was amazing in the #dusk

Gaping Gill, Or Not?
Просмотров 156Год назад
Twice a year there is a chance to be winched down into the cavern of Gaping Gill to see England’s highest waterfall. On this walk the hope was to do exactly that. It is always best to have a Plan B though, which was to squelch my way up across the access land to join the Y3P route, then turn back towards Clapham on the Pennine Bridleway. #yorkshiredales #clapham #gapinggill #winching #walking

LDWA, North Yorkshire, Social Walk, August 5th 2023

19 miles of friendly chat with the #northyorkshire local group of the LDWA. Walk led very kindly by Lynn. Fantastic mixture of terrain and views. Slight change to announced route of 23 miles due to the weather on the day; absolutely the right thing to do (safety first folks, always). Use OS Explorer 1:25000 scale map OL2. #yorkshiredales #walking #hiking

The 10 best routes up #Snowdon Pt 1, Rhyd Ddu & Ranger.
Was really lucky going past Janet's Foss Dec 22 when we watched an otter playing in the river and pools just below the waterfall.
Whernside tarn is well worth a visit. A magical spot in the winter sunshine.
Best of luck buddy. If your moving, your winning.
Thanks @donaloregan7481
That was an awesome sandwich 🥪
Looks beautiful! Think that could be my next little jaunt... Thanks for informative vid
Glad you liked it Zoe. We loved Bishop’s Castle, great food, great atmosphere and great beer at the Three Tuns. Clun was absolutely lovely, with a warm and pleasant welcome at the White Horse. It was a truly beautiful walk between the two places, so peaceful, and so full of history, more than we could possibly show in a 10 minute video. Route is pretty well signposted, but always good to have a map / guidebook / both for back up. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it when you go 😊.
Fantastic part of the world. Shropshire Way is hughly recommended.
Loved every minute of walking through your history with you.
Yes, we need to know about the moors and what goes on up there behind closed paths.
One of my aims is to help give people the tools and the confidence to take advantage of their right to roam, safely and respectfully of course. Everyone who uses it, will be able to see more 😊.
Correction; as pointed out by my Welsh born lovely daughter, in this instance, “u” sounds like an “E”.
Loving the new format, Rob.
Thanks 😊
Looks amazing, can't wait to be well enough to join
Hopefully that won’t take too long. You are welcome anytime, and we can always make a walk to fit 😊
Great views and important point about peat bogs. 😊
We will explore it a bit more together, there certainly are great views.
Stunning scenery. Looking forward to some more videos soon.
Come and join us sometime soon, would be good to meet you in person, and on a walk is a great way to meet.
